Just picked up a second Avid Carbon unit for $1,900, when I learned the original unit can be booted into Carbon Pre mode on the latest firmware I immediately grabbed a B-stock unit without software before the vendors realize these are better value than new Pre units.

Ordered a b-stock Phoenix Gyrator EQ (500 series). Got a good deal, too! If I like it, I have an opportunity for more at an even better price. This EQ is completely brilliant! The combination of the HPF with the output drive thickening/distortion is really sweet on vocals. More sources to try tomorrow... I believe that Warren Dent at Zen Pro Audio mods the hpf at 40hz (possibly 45).

So I would trust him to do this, and you should feel confident taking that option. Is @warzone here?

So I would trust him to do this, and you should feel confident taking that option. Is @warzone here? I've read that ZenPro doesn't actually perform this mod -- rather, they have Phoenix do it, then drop-ship it. That's "with a grain-of-salt" information, though. I bought this one used, and it's w/o the mod. I like it as-is, so far, for vocals -- again, the HPF + output drive is pretty sweet. I think I'd probably want the mod for bass guitar and buss work, though.

OK, a "serious" mic stand. I considered it before. The upside was that I could use a boom for my heavy Soyuz, perhaps bringing it in overhead, but I wasn't sure if its bulkiness would be a problem in my somewhat crowded gear area. My friend brought over his newly acquired UA Bock 167 (and Portico 5017 pre) to give it an evaluation, and had picked up a Ultimate Support MC-125, mainly because he didn't want to see his $3k tube mic topple in an ordinary stand. As we finished up Sunday night with our testing, I hopped online and ordered one, delivered Tuesday morning. 35 lbs, not difficult to assemble or take apart if you need to travel. Slightly smaller footprint than the On-Stage (with boom removed) that I was using, and far easier to move with the rollers. Hefty counter-weight on the boom, easy to adjust the position. So, not impactful on my space, much more flexibility. How does the UA sound? I haven't really read about them much, I don't know if people are really buying them It sounded very good! We were surprised how close it sounded to my Soyuz 017 FET—very close in the mids (which I like so much on the 017), a little brighter at the top end. With levels matched, we had to listen carefully in A/B tests. Same on 12-string. To be clear, I wasn't looking for similarity, we were just checking how the mics stacked up. The Soyuz dips slightly in the sibilant range, so it wasn't a surprise the 167 had a little more there. But, for instance, the difference between my AKG C414 B-ULS and Soyuz is profound, the 167 was far closer. I could drop in a few words in the middle of a verse with one mic and the rest recorded on the other, and no one would catch the change—no way could I do that with the 414 without EQ. I don't have a perfect test because I don't have two of the same preamp. So the tests were either different takes through the same chain, or simultaneous through different preamps (and some with light compression on different compressors—mainly to check out the opto in his 5017 versus my 2A-KT). But we also swapped the preamps on the mics. I like my Soyuz (and the convenience of a FET), but if I were "stuck" with the 167 I wouldn't feel bad at all. We both came away pretty happy. I could put up some examples, but not sure it would be helpful (it's not the 167 compared with another well-liked U67 style mic, for instance, so it doesn't answer the question most want to know—how good of a U67 is it for the money). My friend didn't do any kind of shootout at VK with similar mics, either. He listened to their demo of the three new Bock mics, and was considering a U67 so picked the 167 at a lot less money.

Hey there, on the hi-pass Phoenix mod we worked directly with Rob on the capacitor value to alter the corner frequency to around 45Hz which makes it highly effective down in the 30's and below. It removes the very low bass that can be swimming around back there, without making the mix just sound THIN.
We have performed this mod many times but somebody mentioned us having Phoenix do this for us during manufacturing and this is correct, except we stock the units and do not drop ship them. This way it's just a custom capacitor swap at the factory and I don't have to pay a tech to do it here, which allows us to sell the units at a lower price on the street.
Hope everyone is doing well, thanks for contacting me!

For clarity sorry we mainly sell the rack DRSQ4 or Ascent Two EQ units and I see Gyrator 500 is under discussion. We do perform that mod here, as needed.

They’ve been great.

I have the opportunity to buy :
- a racked pair of NTP 179-120 (with JS in & out transformers, metering, and a bypass and link functions added) - a racked pair of TAB u373a - a racked pair of Neumann PE eq
I can't afford them all right now. I can buy two out of the three. What should I buy ? Has anybody have any experience with the NTP 179-120 ? Same quesiton with the U373a. I already have Neumanns OEV eqs, so is it a good idea to go for a second pair of these eqs ? The PE are pretty similar if not identical, is what I read.
Any help appreciated !!

I can't help as I've never used any of those, but those comps are both probably pretty great. In similar German EQ news, I just picked up Roger Schult's W2395c eq. I'd used the hell out of the Fuse Audio plugin, so thought I'd pick one up for tracking. Really great so far, and now I'm curious about his other newish designs; he just showed a prototype of a new tube/filter/crusher 500 thing at Superbooth that looks like a good time.

I sold a Telecaster and bought several GIK panels.
Perhaps a sign of maturity?

Picked up a Standard Audio Level-Or MKII (have an original as well that's noisy as all getout but keeping), two of the new Shadow Hills Gama Coppers which sound super fun and finally an Earthworks M30 mic to measure the eventual new room.

Picked up a 1968 Gibson SG from the former tour manager for Vanilla Fudge. Has Grover locking tuners that were added in the 70s and the Vibrola was removed but it feels and sounds amazing. Attachments:

I just bought this beauty from Retrosonic, a lunchbox with two NTP 182-100 eqs and also the filter modules (and bypass for each modules, noice). Neat little package ! Obscure gear but sounds super great I'm told. Does anybody has any experience with these eqs ? Or maybe the 179-100 or 179-120 comp/limiters from the same brand ? Anyway, can't wait to try them, they arrive tomorrow.

I just spotted an Audioscape Opto Compressor at a great price and grabbed it.
My first bit of Audioscape kit - I've wanted the LA2A sound for ages.
I'm hoping it's more towards the original 68 vibe than the UA RI which personally I find to be a bit too vanilla. Certainly the demo's I've heard of the AS Opto it has that vibe.
