If you check, I have been around here Well it's been a while since I compared them, though I have a couple laying around somewhere. I remember comparing them directly to my U87's and being saddened by how similar they sounded for a fraction of the price. You could buy 4 of them for the price of some of the cheap U87 clones being sold. It could mean that with a little tweaking they'd sound close enough for jazz. It's a ponderous matter, but there is a trend due to home recording over the last decade. Whilst some manufacturers are busy copying everyone (sometimes themselves) which can be an expensive manufacturing process, some companies have noticed they earn more by dropping their profit margin / cutting manufacturing costs and selling tons of microphones as opposed to a few "high end" pieces with a decent markup. That's not a revelation by any stretch, but it's the way the market has gone. But of course they are always trying to one up each other for that market share, so they innovate and re-define / improve to the point where they are making great sounding mic's irrelevant of price. You only have to look at the spec's of some of the new low cost LDC's to notice how much they've improved over the last 5 years.. We're talking 150dB's SPL (like that Samson I bought), super tight polar responses for home recording, superior off axis rejection, extremely low noise floors, smooth, hi-fidelty etc. etc. It's a race to the bottom and it's great for people on a budget, don't get me wrong there's still a load of **** in the low end but things are promising. It'll end up a badge snobbery thing sooner or later, people don't want to hear that their $200.00 mic can be as good as or better than their Neumann. ericn That was the point I was trying to get across eariler (sorry for the waffle), I recon it's nap time ..

with all hardware inserts, etc. Way to go!!! I'm getting close myself. 64 i/o as of the other day. Moving upward to 80+ later this year as I can afford it. This hybrid approach is expensive, but IMO REALLY worth it.

This hybrid approach is expensive, but IMO REALLY worth it. Thanks drbill, I appreciate it. It's been a struggle for sure. Mostly cabling quandries and tight-quarter squeezes. I'm up to about 26 I/O at this point, but that's enough for what I'm currently doing, and the outboard that I do have. I'd really like to kick it on up to 36 or so but I have to save up for another Apollo, eventually. Hopefully some NAMM thing will cut the prices on those old ones. Also need to start adding sweet gear like Serpent LA3A etc that are on the back burner. At least it's a step in the right direction! Feels good. I am also envious of your 2-bus stuff, I think that appeals to me more than analog summing these days. I think you are really on to something with your workflow and gear, it's making a lot of sense to me these days. I've hinted at it in some of my past work and rigs, but I feel like it's starting to sink in a little more that this is the right way to head with it. I certainly don't need to spend hardly any more time or thought on acquiring plugins! I've done about as much as I can do learning ITB. Frankly I'm a little bored at this point, which is a good motivator. Time to move on to bigger things. And to heat up that soldering iron as well..

Could you, when you have time, just explain a little how so many outs are being used? thanks cheers Wiz

Why so many? Do you end up connecting each piece of outboard to a seperate in and out? Could you, when you have time, just explain a little how so many outs are being used? thanks cheers Wiz Exactly right. I have every in and out of every piece of gear coming up on the patch bay (or at least that's my goal - I'm a touch short of AD/DA right now) and hard patched into an i/o on my DAW. So....if I have 20 pieces of stereo outboard, I need 40 channels of i/o on my DAW. THEN, everything comes up on an insert in Pro Tools. It's as easy to drop outboard onto my tracks in my mixes as a plugin is. Same process, except faster and easier actually. DAW doesn't have to do any "computing" - it just opens up an insert. So...I've got 3 full 11 space 500 racks, and about 60-70 RU of 19" outboard gear - that is in my mixing racks. (Separate from tracking racks which is another topic) 64 i/o gets me close. 72 would get me exactly there. And 80 would give me a year or two of wiggle room. At 96 i/o I'm pulling the plug. No more outboard unless I sell something. LOL This process beats out my automated D&R console. It beats out summing boxes by a mile. And it REALLY kicks the **** out of ITB mixes for me. It's really made me faster and more creative in mixing. I make every effort to keep my gear (that doesn't have recalled patches like verbs) at what I feel is a good sweet spot for me and not touch it - although I do set stuff up for each album project and make notes, then leave it for that project. Obviously there are things that need tweaking like EQ (I prefer stepped switch EQ's like Jeff's new ones or API 550A's) and my Silver Bullets (which have stepped pots too so recall is not too bad.). So yeah, I need lots of i/o. Doesn't everyone??? Seriously, love this approach. Having more fun than I've had since I started out with my own studio....

Ladies and gentleman the Drawmer MC2.1 monitor controller has entered the building. This has been a pretty slutty month for me. Basically re-wired the entire studio in two maddening fits over 48 hours. Everything is sounding better than ever. Feels like a true upgrade. That little 4PORT box on top needs to go, it's not doing anything. My short review of the Drawmer is this is a grown-up's monitor controller. Nothing wonky or derelict about it. Strangley, my previously favorite piece of gear the Tascam UH-7000 is becoming less essential with the new Clarett interface and monitor path. I might just use it for preamps now.

I think it sounds really "sweet." Just that tiny little bit of line stage goodness. But still transparent enough to be reliable as a monitor sound. Probably some tests would be better than just pure listening experience. I'm pleasantly surprised, to say the least.

CAPI 312DI. Bass sounds killer through it...and I think I like it on acoustic more than the VP28

I've finally joined the 500 series club. I picked up a BAE 11 spacer and have a Serpent SB4001 arriving next week. Six CAPI VP28s and 2 VP312s will be arriving shortly after that. I'm excited!
