Optograph came in the mail... http://instagram.com/p/BPDW6IKAmp0 Good news too. Softube sale ended yesterday while I was in the studio and didn't get a chance to buy. Guess that money will stay in my account.

I was able to snatch up a pair of ancient Beyer M100 omni dynamic microphones. They were from someone's father that must have been a tech at Bern Television in the 60's or 70's. I have seen singles sold before but never a pair. They were 10 bucks a piece. A whole slew of other people offered to buy them from him after he hae given me the nod, but he honored his word and is sending them to me. They could be an interesting turn on a guitar cab or to capture the room in other applications like drum kits to harps or even a funky piano sound.

It's called the PAD-2.made by a company in Italy, QES Labs. its basically a custom unit you can add options/upgrades to the base unit. I did all the upgrades including some new stuff..teflon 4 layer pcb's,3 big oversized torriodals for each power stage, solid silver wire etc.

New Samsung Solid State internal Drives and new case of Golden gate thumbpicks. Not too exciting, but I'm still going through divorce.

Also bought the stereo pair of Lauten Sudio LA120 Black series 349.00, great on acoustic guitar, crisp without harshness. Will have a shoot out with the Neumann K184 later this week now waiting for WA87 and WA EQP Tube EQ[/quote]
Very interested in this. I've been eying a pair for a while.

Just added a Radial J48 DI box. I have been dreaming of this one for a long time, finally found the right price at the right time. And yes, my bass sounds as good as ever. In the background you can see the insanity I am dealing with. Installing a new central recording interface today nearly caused me a panic. I had to listen to DIY music from my friends to stay motivated and grind through the install process. Ultimately I need a few cables, and probably another Apollo. But the studio is becoming shiveringly close to fully functional with all hardware inserts, etc.

don't usually quote myself but wanted to confirm the 545L mic is a low impedance unbalanced transformerless output. is about 5" long and very very sexy.

Just bought a Samson MTR321 (condensor) mic... No, I really did.. Yes I'm not joking. I bet 0 people will be interested, but I'll post clips anyway when I get it.
Anyway, I've always had a soft spot for Samson mic's. Around six years ago, for fun / a bet.. I did a GS under £200.00 challenge and I mean that was for everything, pre's / interface / instruments / mic's / drums.. Literally everything but the PC. I was surprised how good it was for a very cheap mic (actually just any mic) but never kept it, there were issues I remember it being quite noisey and I had to be a little too creative when mixing, so just got rid and carried on with Mojave / Neumann.
But the new one's are supposed to be highly improved, they've doubled the price but if it sounds similar to the old one but with much better specs It'll be a keeper.
Anyway, here is the low end as possible track with the Samson mic below:

Many of Samson's mics are made by the chinese company Superlux who make some terrific, cheap U87 clones.

The Superlux CM-H8B lists for just more than 200 dollars and is very similar in sound to a U87.

I wish you'd of been around before I bought some 3U mic's , there has to be some sort of trade off though? I mean they can't be as good quality wise as something like a U87 can they? If they can I'll be selling my TLM's pretty quickly and the 87 AI will be back with the rental company in record time.

If you check, I have been around here Well it's been a while since I compared them, though I have a couple laying around somewhere. I remember comparing them directly to my U87's and being saddened by how similar they sounded for a fraction of the price. You could buy 4 of them for the price of some of the cheap U87 clones being sold. It could mean that with a little tweaking they'd sound close enough for jazz.

I see used Superlux almost everyday around KC, seams one of the US distributors is based here, I haven't tried any thinking they are like every other Made in China Condenser! But hey if MR Microphone likes them I'm going to have to check it out!

I got a AT4060 awhile back cheap because the cable was missing. Fixed up a new one and have beeen using a bit lately. I dig it, used it on 10 different singers the past two days and it sounded great on some, a little cloudy on others.

Well Eric, after shooting my big mouth off about them I should really drag one out and listen to it again. I just remember being impressed by the sound quality in that price range compared to other 200 dollar chinese mics.

Well Tim pull that sucker out my man and give it a listen because there is a distributor here and he's based out of a residential address! So you know I like good cheap mics and you guys know me I might see if we could put some type of a buy together and this time build in a fee to support this place !
