Made some recent acquisitions. Picked up a couple of vintage U87's at a local auction (studio closing). Really surprised I won with my bids. I guess no one was paying attention. These were a major score considering the prices these are going for now. Early serial numbers too. I haven't heard back from Neumann on the dates, but a quick Google search puts the earliest one in the sixties, possible first or second run. Also, one of them is a Stephan Paul modded 87. It sounds pretty fantastic. Much more balanced than the stock. But the stock has got that velvet quality to it. Hard to describe.
The Stam is the SA87+ with timcampbell capsule. This one is much more full and extended in both directions compared to the other two. Sounds WAY different, especially compared to the stock 87. Sounds way closer to the Stephan Paul mod. The mids are really different on the Stam. Still a nice sounding mic, though.

What a score!!
Man. I put that auction on my calendar to make sure I didn't miss it... but put it on the wrong date. True story. I was kicking myself when it ended. But I probably didn't need to be spending any money right now lol...
But man. That old school U87 mount is BEAUTIFUL!

Great score. Having an SP Modded 87 love it or not is something different that at times is going to be a secret weapon.

But I probably didn't need to be spending any money right now lol... But man. That old school U87 mount is BEAUTIFUL! Oh wow! Are you in the Ohio area? There was a bunch of stuff that went for stupid cheap. Had to stop myself. Actually, I had a toddler throwing a tantrum on my lap while I was placing bids. Talk about making it a challenge. A KM86 went for 1150. And some really esoteric vintage stuff like an AKG D25 for 300 bones. Primacoustic 12 pack panels for a couple hundred. There was also a U87B that went cheap-ish. But I’d never heard of a U87B. Crazy. In retrospect I should have threw in for that KM86, but the toddler distraction was intense. Plus, it was already sort of a gamble because these were sold as-is. I could have bought a paperweight, I guess.

And if I’m being honest, I had the intentions to flip these mics. But Indont know now. My thought process is that I’d use the Stam for an 87 sound, but they sound pretty different. I’m sure that old stock U87 needs a capsule cleaning or something. A mic that old probably needs a little TLC. But I don’t even know where to begin. Or who to trust these days.

It's a shame that U87 headbaskets are so diffucult to open. I'd love to see all 3 capsules. In the original, if it's from the 60's and been in constant studio use, The capsule is probably coated with crud or has been changed.

I finally put together my Dachman RK12 mic and it sounds great! Going to do a second one ASAP.
Also got a Behringer Xenyx 1202FX mixer, not sure why, just to have a small mixer for various things. The mic pre is surprisingly good, not too far off from the MOTU M4 mic pre I compared it to.

The stock 87 (serial 8710) was serviced in 1982 by Gotham Audio. Invoice says “capsule cleaned, dirty. Replaced R11, high distortion. Re-strapped for 50ohm operation per clients request.”

Ordered a FiiO BTR5 rechargeable Bluetooth/USB DAC-headphone amp. Been wanting to add a Bluetooth connection to my '05 Hybrid Escape for a while, the newer hi-res streaming services pushed me over the edge. Will be shooting out the DAC in the studio: www.fiio.com/btr5Been using this little battery operated DAC for a month, heavily. Signed up for Apple Music's 3 months free and enabled their hi-res streaming option, now I look forward to commutes so I can hear new details on old faves with each drive. Been doing heavy remote recording since Saturday and I plug the little FiiO into the MacBook Pro over USB after packing up so I can do edits/bounces wherever I find a quiet spot. Hence, I just ordered the Massdrop Sennheiser HD 6XX phones with the balanced 2.5mm cable as it gets good reviews driven with the FiiO. Senny's sound great with the balanced connection to the FiiO BTR5, love this little battery operated edit rig:

Says to warm up 10 minutes or so. I guess I'll run Line-in from streamer for burn and hifi shenanigins. No clue yet but they are gorgeous, the switches have a distinct "mil-spec" feel - everything like clock werk. Hey why not oogle a little. The radial lense on the lamp is sci-fi baby!
Thank you, Weight Tank genius. (proper boxing too, much to my delight)

The patina-like finish is a thing. No doubt! (not "aged", of course, just a "Sweedish" watch like thing)

Traded a snare for a Urei LA22. Pretty flexible piece! Like a BSS DPR-402 on steroids

Just bought 2 more of the Tascam headphones, stupid deal of the day $39.99ea. These are good excellent, not mind-blowing, but good stuff. Linear (a little bump in the bottom, flat on top but probably hard rolloff, nothing scary), fit well, light weight, 1/8"mini-plug with screw-on 1/4", not flabby, not puffy or peaky (to my ears). No ear fatique here. I like having a pair here and there. (edit. they're hardwired at the headphone end) Hurry, studip deal ends today. Not a MF shill, either. Sorry if off-topics. www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-audio/tascam-th-300x-studio-headphones/j20916000000000
my other headphones are Avantone Planar, Slate, other cheapies. Have had 7506, Ultrasone, others but all middle of the road, nothing over $700 so far.

I got a Tube Amp Doctor (TAD) Premium Selected 12AY7 / 6072A for my main vocal microphone Claire. The old JAN GE I had in there fuzzed out on me.
This is a good tube! Very quiet, has more body (bottom end) than the JAN GE. Maybe not quite as smooth in the mids? I don't know, but I'm happy with it.
Sounds closer to 'real' 251 clips I've studied now due to the low end extension.
Got the tip on this toob from paying attention to Chad Kelly. These are the benefits of lurking around the forums and gear sites.
