Apogee Symphony Desktop. Big upgrade over MOTU, especially on the AD side. Been going back and forth on this one for a week or two now... I want to get rid of my Aurora/Apollo, and the Apogee is really tempting. If you have time, I'd love to hear a recording on the MOTU vs. the Apogee. Even just a VO/spoken word bit would be cool.

I had a pair of Senn HD650 for a while. A comfortable fit physically, but for me, they had no top end; very dull and muddy. And I tried them with various headphone amps. I'd never attempt checking a mix on them; just too muffled in the top end. I went back to alternating between AKG-701 and Shure SRH940. The Shures have become my favorite for checking mixes. I heard depth and detail in them I've not heard anywhere else, and I've been through a small pile of high-end headphones. But.... that said, I suspect that headphones are a very personal choice.-09 Nooooo never! haha The 650s are known more for their mid range I think. You can really get the mid range right, which is the hardest part in a mix IMO. But yes, totally personal choice. "The Oven" by Hendyamps and Maor Appelbaum. It's an EQ-able-saturator/transient-enhancer/tube-warmth/mojo box for mastering and/or track/subgroup processing. Taking things up a couple more notches over here! View AttachmentView AttachmentView AttachmentDamn man. That thing looks so nice. Really would like to try one but wow pricey. Also doesn't it not have stepped controls? You worried about recall? Think i saw you post that up on a facebook group actually too.

Yeah that was half my PPP loan. Gotta splurge once in a while though, to add new capabilities and stay inspired. It's easy enough to write down the non-stepped settings the way the dials are marked. And with vibey units like The Oven and Michelangelo I prefer continuous pots so I can feel for the sweet spot which might lie between steps.

That looks like a different head than in the pictures and videos I've seen. Is it a mod?

That looks like a different head than in the pictures and videos I've seen. Is it a mod? Yeah, I don't understand that pic at all. The body is entirely out of proportion with the capsule. It doesn't look like any current Soyuz I've seen. Spill the beans, winetree ! What's going on with that mic?!

Is it true that the 650s sound quite a bit different to the 600s? Have you ever compared them, Blackdawg? I've had 600s for about 20yrs now, and I really haven't liked them much over the past 8yrs. Just too bright on the top for me these days. I mix too dull on them to compensate, and then the mix is off. I did pick up two pairs of the Sennheiser HD6 Mix headphones due to a few comments ragan made last Fall, and they are excellent. Much, much different from the HD600. (They're closed-back, for one thing). I have "heard" the 600s are more like NS10, and the 650s are flatter with bigger bass. I wouldn't know, all I have is the HD6XX from massdrop, which is even "slightly different" from the 650 it copies. Sonarworks can help with any of them if you have it. And yes they change a lot with different amplifiers. i find the opposite. I feel the HD600 are way flatter than the hd650 adn do most of my mixing on them. I'll check on the hd650 for a different perspective and to see if anything jumps out and also the HD650 seem beefier for pleasure listening so I like to listen back on them. They seem "prettier".

Picked up this Nighthawk reissue from a friend of a former student that passed away. Couldnt really find a tone that i didnt already have so had my tech set it up for Nashville tuning which I've never tried or had. Hello to my new favorite toy!

I did a Motu 16a vs Symphony MKII shootout with tracking an acoustic guitar into both, single take. I think it’s on this forum somewhere, hopefully I still have the files hosted somewhere.

Ah, I'd love to hear that! I remember checking out the converter shootout you did a while back (the one with the Bon Iver song), that was a very revealing comparison.

To avoid having to drive an hour to a different studio to recall an old mix I bought Waves EMP Toolbox because it had a couple of the plug ins I needed that I don't have at home (Waves Kramer Tape, Aphex) and instead of 2 free plug-ins it gave me 4, so I got Torque, InPhase, DPR-402, and Kramer PIE...mostly because they don't come in any other bundles that are usually on sale for like $75.
Kramer PIE is a pretty useful compressor. I've used it on A LOT of mixes over the years, love it on bass.

I got a Gibson stop tailpiece for my Epiphone guitar. It's a low mass kind of thing. Think I'm hearing some subtle-more-good-ness, but there's also a fresh set of strings on there, so don't test me on this.
Also got one of those dorky looking stick-on pick holders that I pasted up near the toggle switch on the upper bout. Sort of like wearing a fanny pack to suit and tie event, but I don't care, this Les Paul is my baby and I like having picks wherever it goes.
The guitar is forcing me not to play power chords and "magic" cowboy chords. There's a lot more jazz and improv, lead lines, coming out so I'm happy where it's pushing me. Having single note fullness and sustain like that is a different thing to conjure with, vs an average guitar.
