sennheiser hd600 headphones for those „moments“ mixing on the couch with a laptop. no DAC invoved, just „pure“ mac output „power“ :-) very low volume. still getting used to the sound. initially i was hating what i was hearing but now slowly it starts to make sense. Congrats! Sennheiser cans definitely take some getting used to. I've often thought about picking up a pair of Focals for the pleasant sound but then I realize everything you mix on 'pleasant' sounds awful everywhere else.

That’s everything Focal. i know my focal alpha 65‘s ain‘t high end gear but my mixes on them translate rather nicely. and strangely enough, what i hear through my new sennheiser hd600‘s ain‘t that far away from what i hear on my focal alpha‘s.

Apogee Symphony Desktop. Big upgrade over MOTU, especially on the AD side. Wait…this is the symphony for $1500? Same adda? Ah…ok. It’s 2x2 audio

I tried a buddy's hd600's once. He swore by them. I felt like they dropped me into a completely different universe / time dimension - as compared to the JBL monitors I'd been using successfully for a decade. Gave up on em almost immediately. Wish I had felt different. I know many love em.....

I’ve never been completely fond of them until driving them with the stellar headphone out on my new Aurora (n).

I was driving them with the Grace M905. One would think that is a good amp.... The problem here is your grace probably has a damn good headphone amp section but what kind of load was it designed to drive? Headphone impedance is all over the map. It’s funny but I was just reading a review of a headphone amp where the reviewer felt like he was safe because he used 4 different headphones, all were 600ohms so the load was pretty similar. Then take a look at a plot of your favorite headphones impedance vs freq. some of these are all over the place. The only phones where you know the amp is going to get a long with a particular headphone are the electrostatics where the amp or transformer was designed around that particular headphone driver. However even in that world I see guys using adapters and not understanding why the STAX high voltage suck with a lower voltage amp.

I use the 650s with an m920 amp and m900. No issues. Though the Merging Hapi amp is better I think. Is it true that the 650s sound quite a bit different to the 600s? Have you ever compared them, Blackdawg? I've had 600s for about 20yrs now, and I really haven't liked them much over the past 8yrs. Just too bright on the top for me these days. I mix too dull on them to compensate, and then the mix is off. I did pick up two pairs of the Sennheiser HD6 Mix headphones due to a few comments ragan made last Fall, and they are excellent. Much, much different from the HD600. (They're closed-back, for one thing).

I say, yes, to each their own. I found a good way of getting things to translate. More money, more gear…lol

The 650s are more balanced overall I think, but often people say they are brighter or a "hyped" version of the 600s. I think they are quite nice though. I use them along side my AKG702 and my ATA M50x. between the 3 I can get good results. They all have their strengths and weaknesses.

I wouldn't know, all I have is the HD6XX from massdrop, which is even "slightly different" from the 650 it copies. Sonarworks can help with any of them if you have it. And yes they change a lot with different amplifiers.

I had a pair of Senn HD650 for a while. A comfortable fit physically, but for me, they had no top end; very dull and muddy. And I tried them with various headphone amps. I'd never attempt checking a mix on them; just too muffled in the top end. I went back to alternating between AKG-701 and Shure SRH940. The Shures have become my favorite for checking mixes. I heard depth and detail in them I've not heard anywhere else, and I've been through a small pile of high-end headphones.
But.... that said, I suspect that headphones are a very personal choice.

I let myself keep the Les Paul for now, so it's new all over again! Put the stock pickups back in. They're noisy, but the tone is great. I guess a guitar like this is an acquired taste.

You're right, some things just work. My room sounds really good, finally. Not that it's ruler flat in response, but that it just sounds good, and things translate well. I did spend on materials to build panels. The converters and monitors just work good together in my room. I'm hoping to one day put a Carl Tatz PhantomFocus system in my new room.
