My latest totally sucks, literally it sucks, I replaced my cheap no name desoldering gun with a Hakko. I modified and recapped an Amek/Tac Scorpion II several years ago and bought a Hakko before I did. Thing is worth its weight in gold.

I've got a pair of their inv-7 hg mkiii incoming, I'll report back. I also placed an order with Mark for another VL37A to make it a pair. I talked to him as well and he was really helpful. I have the inv-7 hg mkiii arriving tomorrow (Friday). I will be comparing it to the regular inv-7. Even if the mkiii is tight, I might just figure out how to store it with it on, so I do not have to go through the maneuver ever time I want to use it. I know - I am quoting me and WKG, because I am getting back on this. I received an mkiii today. The mic is less wobbly in it than on the regular Inv-7. I would use the mkiii over the inv-7. I would like to say ymmv, but I think 70% of dentists would prefer the mkiii. However, even the mkiii is not ideal, unless you have a small project studio like mine. If these are moving around a lot, I would check on something else, especially for a ribbon mic that you do not want to drop!

My soldering iron stopped working so I took it apart to see what was up. A wire had broken off the heating element and needed to be resoldered.......

My soldering iron stopped working so I took it apart to see what was up. A wire had broken off the heating element and needed to be resoldered....... Many years ago I was TDing a multi act college tour and the iron in my go bag did the same thing as I needed to re solider a Samson wireless in the middle of nowhere IA. The only backup I had were those stupid old Radio Shack solder tabs that you used an open flame with. So I grabbed somebody’s lighter repaired the iron and then fixed the transmitter. Flash forward about 5 years and a guy walks into Full Compass with a Samson transmitter that well looks like I do now, he had the same problem but tried to fix the transmitter first.

I have been using the MaleTomp vari-mu limiter made by Lisciel Equipos in Brazil. Totally handmade hand wired and painted. Really nice sounding.

That’s a broad question. I like them on anything when I’m looking for that euphoric gooey gluey kinda sound. Or just barely touch them and have them knock peaks back. It’s sort of like asking what’s your favorite color paint.....

A handful of new mics around here...I haven't officially acquired them, but I might. A family friend needs help selling them. I'm checking them out and will help her sell the ones I don't want to buy.
AT 4060 - Haven't used one of these in many years. I think I like it on my voice. It's pretty open on top but not harsh. Detailed mids. Controlled low end. Might keep it.
AKG 414 ULS - Tried it, didn't like it. Asked around a bit for suggested uses. Tried it again on other stuff, liked it a lot. Might keep it.
KM 184 - I don't hate it as much as everyone thinks I should. I have an 84 and I still think the 184 is a good sounding mic. Might keep it.
Rode NT2a - I know, I know. But it's QUIET. I record lots of very, very quiet stuff, to the point where noice floor is a real issue. This mic is almost silent, and it would come in handy. Might keep it.
Also, I've been curious about Seventh Circle pre's for years and have never seen them in the flesh. Got a deal on 4 72's and 4 84's. Very happy with them so far.

Made my second Softube AAX DSP purchase, Tube-Tech Compressor Collection. Shooting it out against TLA-100A for the #1 opto spot on vocals...

The VL37A fits well enough and it supports the weight of the mic much better than the INV-7. If it had just a little more reach around the circumference of the mic it would be perfect. I would not be concerned if it's stationary but if moving around and you bump the mic right there's a remote possibility you may nudge it out of the clip. The USM-L is solid and works great but just a larger profile. FWIW the MKIII is perfect on the Soyuz 0013's. I may sell the INV-7's as I wouldn't really need them.

Just got an AEA RPQ2... Kinda blown away, really. Everyone always yaps about how punchy transformer-based preamps are, but to me these have wayyyy more punch and depth than my CAPIs (which I love). Has me wondering if I haven’t been chasing the wrong rabbit...

I got these free plugins that anyone else can have too if they like: Minimal Audio Rift Filter Lite (giveaway) and TAL Filter 2 rev 3.0.
These are pretty easily in the zone of something like Sound Toys FilterFreak, and have some modes that the others don't, so they're all worth having IMO.
Don't know if there are any filter freaks on here but to me it's a quick way to get "trippy" when a song is sounding too buttoned up. Like a boring electric guitar for example.
The TAL one does the "LFO Tool" volume envelope thing too so you can make your EDM sounds or whatever. I've never chased that sound but it's nice to have it in the bag.
