Super budget fun, I'm fixing up a no-name chrome over steel snare drum for my buddy. It doesn't even have a brand or model on it anywhere. I ordered new snare wires and a throwoff, going to need some grease or lube of some sort. Stole some tension rods and washers from some junk drums lying around in a corner. I just like these 14x5.5 steel/chrome drums a lot so I thought I would help it along before we start our sessions. After the clean, lube, polishing, and setup I think it's going to get a fair bit of use in October.
I'm on a snare drum kick, I also just refurbished my black galaxy Ludwig Acrolite last week, now it's a drum I'm proud and happy to play along side any of my more expensive drums.

I purchased a pair of Chop Shop eq's.
One black, the other white - nicknamed Ebony and ivory..
It's my last purchase this year - really smokin' sounding units, so handy in practice..

I just pulled the trigger on some tiny Emotiva Airmotiv 3B speakers for my mobile setup...get so tired of phones only. I hope they don't suck. They're only $99 on closeout sale if anyone's interested. I'll try to give an impression after they arrive on Monday.

I grabbed a nice, clean AKG D12E today and while I like it, I saw what they are going for on eBay and I'm not sure I like it "that" much. But I'm going to put it through the paces next week before I offer it up for sale.

sold a few mics to pick up a Coles 4038. it was a good idea had a line on a Yamaha CP70 but I missed it by a hair. good deal too. semi-devastating. eyeing the chandler mic cassette but I would have to sell 4-5 units to get it. still weighing the pros and cons of that move. id much rather a 'redd47/rs124/whatever eq matches' strip. it would suck to go tg only for the redd to follow soon after.

I haven't put the BG-2 through the paces, I've only used it for a tracking vocals and it worked nicely for that, usually release time 1 or 2. You can change the tone quiet a bit with the different ohm and British/American feedback settings which worked great because the past few days I've been working with half a dozen singers all on the same mic and I could tailor the sound to suit their voices.

Sennheiser HD650 - Really great set of phones. Open back. I have a set of AKG Q701, which are also pretty great, but these are totally different. Rounder top and thicker in the midrange than the AKG's. Really handy to have a couple different pairs of high end headphones. Just read this. I love the hd650's. And with the sonarworks software they really kill

Are you also using it for your speakers? I'm very very (very!) dubious when it comes to to software like this (or using graphic EQs to calibrate the speakers).

Emotiva Airmotiv 3B speakers ended up being complete rubbish, I am sending them back. Build quality is terrible, awful piercing high frequency noise at any setting. I have just placed an order for some JBL LSR305. Hopefully those will be more adequate. I feel like I should have known better to stick to pro audio standards, but it was worth a gamble anyway. Only out on shipping one way, Emotiva was kind enough to take them back on return.

Hm, just this weekend i heard from my brother that he saw emotiva amps that look suspiciously like those from a chinese manufacturer who offers a similar piece for ... let's say, a fraction of the price. I do not know if this is true, but i would not be very surprised if they start to just relabel products. To be fair, the chinese manufacturer offer them for a very, very low price for what these amps actually are. But still. I was a bit shocked when i heard about the price difference of these products. But by no means i say that other brands DON'T do this ... Emotiva had some good products to make their name a brand people actually know. But it is hard to stay there. You can not really hold extraordinary price/performance ratio in a sustainable manner when it comes to products like high quality amps and speakers. And honestly,... they were hyped a lot by the folks. So people maybe expect too much now and they can not hold up to the hype. Hmm.

I would be tremendously interested in more information about this chinese manufacturer's amp... Like YUGE interest. Cos, China. I'm sure they're tremendous amps. Just TREMENDOUS.

Well, we just smalltalked and i do not even remember the name of the chinese brand, but will see if i get my bro on the phone the next days and will ask him about the manufaturer and exact models. Actually i am more often surprised about chinese products quality these days. Asking myself how they can make profit at these prices. (OK, i guess, we all know. Workers with extremely low income...) On the other hand i see many good manufacturers here giving up on producing high end, lowering the quality or simply buying complete product lines in china and sell more to the consumer market. The difference gets smaller. Obviously. Uhm, and i guess i got the irony.

Emotiva gear is designed in Nashville and manufactured in China. What the chinese do with that maybe what they want, is interesing. I think Emotiva is known for their power amps in particular, and that does happen to be my favorite piece of Emotiva gear particularly, the XPA-200 power amp that I use with my passive speakers. The build quality of the brand in general leaves something to be desired, but for the most part they seem to do pretty well on sound quality and audio design. Also, they have a pretty generous 5 year warranty, which I am going to put to use in November for my XPA-200 and DC-1, both of which have mild issues.
The Airmotiv 3B is a pretty low end piece of gear, I can see why they chose to discontinue that model. It's pretty rough.

I was only referring to the sennheiser hd 650's. In my earlier post. No experience with anything else.
Sonarworks. I like it with the cans as it makes them a bit flatter in response. I don't use the speaker modeling just the eq curve to make them more linear I don't use sonarworks with my speakers ever.

The Sennheiser HD650 are diffuse-field equalized headphones. If they are anything like my HD250I+II (ok, i guess they are) then i think this resembles monitoring with speakers in front quite ok, better than others for sure. It is a hardware pendant of the "virtual room mix" software of the different brands that claim to give you mix room impression. Doesn't the Sonarworks software flatten out this room impression for linearity? Or can they preserve diffuse-field EQ? I find this feature to be a huge part of the comfort of these Sennheiser headphones for long-hour monitoring. With flat earphones i have a much less relaxed time listening.

A Matador C12 kit from Chunger with a Cinemag 13114 transformer and a Tim Campbell CT12 capsule.
The kit arrived this morning and I've finished assembling both the mic and power supply PCB's.
Going to try a 50 plus year old Mullard 12AT7 tube for starters.
Also delivered were a pair of Jensen JT-11-BMQ output transformers.
