Well there are those crazy million dollar price range ion or Plasma speakers and some esoteric B&O that are pretty much omni. Having lived with dipoles and Bipoles ( speakers not talent) and at times tried to mix on them I'll say this when and if we have a revolutionary quality affordable Omni speaker system we are going to have to totally rethink the microphone ! Yes I love my Magnepan MG 3.5's even if At the moment they are in their boxes, nothing and I mean nothing comes close to that line source true ribbon ! Hello ericn, what do you mean by.."I'll say this when and if we have a revolutionary quality affordable Omni speaker system we are going to have to totally rethink the microphone!"Thanks. For the most part we work in a world where we create a quasi stereo image from mono semi directional sources realizing that our reproduction is based on directional speakers and for the most part we except that we are very limited in how depth and height are defined, but. True quality omni reproduction is going to make us want true 3 -d reproduction . Current surround pickup is pretty much using mic arrays that have all the comb filtering and phase issues that keep us from using speaker arrays from being used as omni speakers! We are going to need / want a point source pick up that let's us not just pick up omni but output 3D or let us minipulate in 3D! Basically it's Virtual Audio Reality, to get there we need the tools at both ends.

Well, iamasound, ericn made perfect sense to me. Yo can't change one part of the equation without another... either the other variable or the result.

I'm trying to wrap my head around the idea of omni speakers. Would I be getting close if I thought that an array of microphones would be needed to capture in three dimensions?

I had eggs for a year or so. I loved the idea of them design concept and I liked a number of the speakers the designer had previously designed. But I could never get along with the eggs. I moved to ProAcs and Love them. I maybe grabbing a nice pair of NS10's from a friend for a nice deal. Not that I love NS10's but for the price they will be hard to pass up. You know I was telling Jesse just a couple of days ago , I love the concept of the eggs but I thought the choice of drivers was the limiting factor! At one point I did a comparison between the eggs and some nice passive speakers and a killer amp. I put the eggs up in the listening position and the other speakers where 90 degrees away from each other and one ones on the floor. I flipped to them on accident and they sounded way better then the eggs. It was at that point I knew I had to move away from them. I did take a look at the amp before I sold mine. They use a really cheap amp as well. It would have been best to figure out a way to power them with a nice power amp. Then I could have heard what the design and speakers are really doing. Maybe some day SE will release a higher end passive version. That could be very cool. Anyway Jesse I don't want to bum you out. Maybe you will get along with them much better then I did.

BTW, I just grabbed a nice pair of original NS10's for 500. To good of a deal to pass up. Now I will have to build another amp for them.

Couple of budget gems. Squier Classic Vibe Tele and Martin D121XAE. The Classic Vibe is something I'd been keeping an eye on for a build I was going to do. I absolutely love the necks, couldn't care less that they're made in China. The profile and finish just feels right. Anyway, I put some SD Broadcasters in it and threw the white pearloid pickguard on it and it's a great Tele. Nothing about the rest of the hardware makes me want to swap it, and I'm pretty picky. These are solid guitars, stock. The Martin is another thing I'd been watching out for a deal on. HPL back and sides but solid spruce top. I swear they're some of the better sounding 12 strings I've played. Very boring aesthetically but great playing and sounding guitars. Attachments:

I ended up putting a set of fender nocaster pickups and a rutters bridge on it but it was very playable stock. I agree on the necks, really comfortable. I'd like to pick up another and put a trem king tks-2 on it.

One of the better deals I've come across. Had to scoop it up immediately. MC 930s have been on my radar forever.
Edit: just plugged one into the Great River and strummed around a little. Really nice.

I finally pulled the trigger on upgrading my interface to an RME FF802. Not as sexy as some you Uber professional folks, but It has more expandability then I'll ever need and the A/D is a serious improvement from my last setup. Don't need the remote capabilities/ features of the new Ufx+ ( out of my budget anyway) though the thunderbolt & Usb3 is probably a little more future proof but I'm set.
