Went a grabbed a butcher block counter top from Home Depot to build a side desk for general useage. And also grabbed a 40'' TV that was only $120 new at bestbuy. LED HD 1080, no smart functions. Just plain jane TV. Perfect for my new monitor behind the Zaor desk. Now to sand and stain the desk. Great ideas! The non smart-function SD TVs are great monitors. Honestly, when it comes to 42" and above TVs, high definition ruins it for me. I like the softer picture quality, but I'm not doing graphics or video professionally - and that would be the only need for HD IMHE. I'm trying to find two of those standard flat screens in 50-52" size now.

Plus 1080 makes things look bigger so the screen can be further away and you can still see everything in a daw haha Dual 50s wow haha im hoping I'll be good with this 40 for now and my old 27" off to the side for editing.

Avatar 4x12 with Texas Heat and Classic Lead 80's in X pattern is assembled now. Just waiting for the house to wake up so I can start the volume war. Speakers are still breaking in.
Initially it's sounding very mid forward with a "nice/polite" top end, haven't really cranked it up yet. Have only played with the Boss Katana the real test will be the Fender Showman and the Selmer Treble n Bass heads.

Yes, it may be cheesy, but the studio has a little night light now. Those are really cool. I had an idea to do that some years ago, and milled around and did nothing about it. I coulda been rich! I coulda been a playa, I coulda been a contenda. Yes, I could have been a Spanish beach. Seriously though, I love these. Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, there is a guy who is actually not far from me who makes them and sells them on Reverb. I'd been looking at it for a while and at some point we needed a night light for the basement. where my studio is, and didn't have one. I used it as the excuse I was waiting for to grab this. lol.

Grabbed an ADL-1500 locally. Probably needs to be sent in for service...but then I think maybe I should have Jim Williams modify it instead I’d send it to Jim! We had an ADL1000 for a bit at the studio. I don’t know how people compared that thing to an LA2a, cause it sounded absolutely nothing like one imo. Still a cool box though!

The optos definitely sound faster. Which, is not a problem for me. Putting it through the paces a bit I really like what it did for drum overheads. But, it got crunchy fast. I know this wants to see 600 ohm at the input and I'm not sure what the output impedance of the Avid HD I/O are...might have to wire up a resistor. Jim's is an expensive upgrade (replacing all the transformers)...but maybe he'd do a "half upgrade" and keep the stock transformers.

Because at the time it was all you could get new, & used just kept going up up up in price. Were they dead on? Hell no, but it wasn’t like today , nobody was making parts for clones. Without Anthony Demaria and Andrew at Purple I don’t think the Putman’s would have even considered buying UA back from Harmen . Not dissing you just putting in some historical context.

ADL apparently used a more hi-fi transformer set originally, and people wanted more colored bandpassing like an LA-2A, so they got dumbed down. Then....you send them to Jim and he puts a hifi transformer in them.....
ya can't win, if ya didn't know.....

Accidentally found a KMS84i on eBay. - which is a KM84i with a windscreen on top of it for handheld vocal use. That comes off, and there it is: A good as new KM84 for $700-odd!! Bought and shipped about 15 minutes ago. I've been keeping an eye out for a deal like that but missed that one. Nice find Ward! Good to know it can still happen once in a while.
Here you go! I won't snap these up. Hope someone else here can grab them. I'll bet ya, you can get these for $1600! That's $800 a mic. www.ebay.com/itm/2-x-Neumann-KMS-84i-Pair-in-Excellent-Condition/153999061934

Output VU’s a little over 0VU and it’s pretty crunchy. Could that be bad impedance matching with a modern converter? It wants to see 600 ohm

OOPS . . . sorry. I made a lower offer to see the floor of the seller's price range, and he accepted. DAMMIT. If you want them, I'll sell them to you for the same price.

It actually doesn't have to see 600, it should be happy enough with 10K. It would only go crunchy and low if driving 100 or less.

I'll put two KM84s and two KMS84s with screen removed as closeless as possible mic'ing a D28 playing something simple, strumming with a light pick and some basic fingerstyle stuff. And centered, 14" away above, aimed down at the neck join. Ok?

At the time everybody blamed it on crappy tubes and transformers, most would simply put a fixed pad on the inputs and suddenly it was like a real LA2.

Look like maybe 184s or 185s.

I’ve made several records with Andrew from Mandolin Orange. Here’s a single KM84 on his mandolin. KM84 on the guitar, KM86 on the fiddle. There’s no compression on anything except a touch of TLA100 on the bass. Picture at the bottom is our usual set up...no headphones just jamming in a circle. Heres another one, same band. I think this record sounds better, even though it's the exact same set up. I think I got a whole day to mix this record instead of an evening like Andrew's haha! Attachment Deleted
