Just got an old beat up Electro-Voice RE10. Wow, these things sound like crap. There's something wrong with it. Hope you didn't pay too much - dunno if you can get parts anymore. Or, you know, it’s possible he just doesn’t like the way an RE10 sounds. Ward is smart, has good ears, and has his own opinions.

Got a new distortion pedal. It's a big honker (Phase 90 for scale).

There's something wrong with it. Hope you didn't pay too much - dunno if you can get parts anymore. Or, you know, it’s possible he just doesn’t like the way an RE10 sounds. Ward is smart, has good ears, and has his own opinions. It's more likely the mic has something wrong with it. I've owned a LOT of RE10/11/15/16 mics and they DO NOT sound like crap. They're broadcast mics - the have a very flat, smooth response. If you watch old TV variety shoes from the '60s and '70s (Ed Sullivan, Hee Haw, Captain and Tennille, Lawrence Welk, et al.) you'll see more RE10s and 11s than just about any other mic.
Of course it's a Variable D mic, so if you're expecting proximity effect you're going to be disappointed - but I would expect that a person of Ward's experience would know about that.
It's true that older EVs do often have a problem with disintegrating foam, so it's possible that a careful cleaning and replacement of the foam could clear it up. I've also seen cases where a bit of iron shaving has worked its way in so that it sits on the diaphragm and pins it to the magnetic structure. Very, very rarely, if the mic has been seriously abused I've seen the VC separate from the diaphragm, but this is quite rare - those mics are tough. Also, if the mic has been abused by exposure to dirt, if the vent that runs down the back of the mic gets obstructed that can cause problems.

I have two of them. Pretty handy gizmos. You can get away with just one stand (two booms) on a singing acoustic guitarist, for example. Or you can mic an entire drum kit with a couple of medium Latch Lake stands and a few Extra Booms. It can save a LOT of clutter!

Not as much as the RE10 does, however. I’ve bought a bunch of old EV mics over the last year. The balance of mid range to lows and highs can be off putting. Don’t give up on it. I find that the EVs often work well where you wouldn’t think they would and vice versa. I think all of us have been conditioned lately that every mic should have impressive, tight lows, smooth mids, and angelic highs. EVs are more of a color on the palette and I’m using them often. And yes, do what John said and carefully take out the old foam. I can post a link to HVAC foam that works well if you’d like.

A modest acquisition I know. But the price was right and it has the discontinued 3005 chip, so I'll give it a spin. The plastic case doesn't bother me--it's for studio not road use.

I picked up a five piece Ludwig Classic Maple kit for the studio. I had a set of Pearls, but this is a huge upgrade. I can't wait to have some great drummers come and put down some tracks. My mediocre playing isn't all that inspiring.
