Forgot to update. Mike checked out my Rev A and it was all good to go, just needed proper calibration. So the Q bias was correctly calibrated already, but the gain trim was way off. This was the stage where I couldn't get my meter to do what he shows in the video. So it seems like a meter issue, because nothing was wrong with the build.
Either way, the Rev A sounds really great and I'll probably build a second one soon. I love it on drums and vocals and I've got one blank space in my little 500 series rack. Pair of Great River Harrison 32c, blank space, Hairball Rev A. Seems like a second Rev A would round it out nicely.

Hey dudes. I want to mod an Apex 460. I'm very impressed with the soundclips at the bottom of this page. I've had a couple varieties of the Apex 460/Alctron HST-11A and the change this guy's mods make is exactly what I would want. I'm getting ready to order the stuff. My question for the moment is, is it generally considered safe to order something like the Silver Mica 4700pf capacitor off of eBay or something like that? Not like it's a huge risk money wise but is there anything other than what it reads on the meter that I should be concerned about? Also, anything wrong with ordering that CineMag 2480 off eBay/Reverb to avoid the wait? I've just never sourced stuff myself so I'm pretty green as far as the ins and outs of buying components. rocinante unit7 svart

Both are totally fine. I suppose there could be fake mica caps but I doubt it. Ive heard of fake Wima caps but even then it seems hardly worth the effort. Cinemag off ebay is fine. You might get it a bit cheaper through chungers Studio 939 page store.studio939.com/Psst- There's a bunch of mic mod stuff on his page too.

Do you think I'd be better off just buying the housing and stuff and building it from scratch rather than gutting an Apex 460 and swapping stuff in? Edit: in other words, is it dumb to pay the $250 for a 460 when I'm just going to be pulling out the most costly stuff, capsule, transformer and tube, and replacing it all? I hadn't thought of just building one from scratch but maybe that's smarter? Are there PCBs for sale to build one of those? I'm so green at this. Thanks for the insight.

Check out the Fox audio minimod if you want to maximize the 460's potential before you go on a modding adventure. www.foxaudioresearch.ca/The460secret.htmStart there, and see what you think. Those suggestions fix most of the issues of the mic. The rest is just window dressing until you decide to change the capsule.

Here's the one I was referring to. www.mark-o-matic.com/apex-460-mod.htmlI am changing the capsule. Probably going to use the 3U Audio capsule that he uses in the MKIVD/GZ251FET and tube.

Naturally Svart has the best answer but what your asking is really the million dollar question. I remember taking forever to get one of my u87 to fit correctly and work in one of the Behringer B2's that I had bought to use as a body/frame. Mainly because there are several different versions of the B2. In one version the switches needed for the u87 can just drop right in, the pcb's fit nice, and the capsule seems like it was designed for it. In another version you have to cut up the pcb, widen the holes for the switches, widen the holes for the pcb, redrill the capsule wire holes, refit the top etc... and it wouldve been far easier and better to just buy one of the oem mic bodies.

When you do the mic "from scratch" so to speak, just starting with an empty donor body, is there a PCB kit for sale for that 460 circuit? I didn't see it on the page you linked but maybe I missed it. I see you can buy the power supply so that much would be covered.

The 460 is a mod. Hey but now that I think about it Greg (Okgb @ GroupDIY) has an apex 460 or 450 he is selling with parts to mod it I believe. Its in the Black Market under the thread Hypaethral. That would be a good start and Greg is a good dude.
