I get the best results by using Trigger but using my own samples. Every time I mic up a kit I take sample hits so I have quite an array now.
I absolutely hate the stock Trigger kits and most of the expansion packs though the Blackbird pack (finally) has some that actually sound like drums. The vast majority of Slate samples are just way overcooked. They sound like a Fallout Boy record or something.

I am a long time BFD3 user. It's not really a sample replacement plugin, but it's pretty realistic as a midi drum player and there is a pretty large extended library available from Fxpansion and 3rd party sources. I always replace cymbals, however. And I wish I could find the perfect sampled hi-hat. That seems to be tough to do well, due to the complexity of sound produced.

I've never liked them. I've triggered 808 style kicks off a kit and stuff like that for deliberately artificial stuff - but, as said, most of the sample packs are overcooked garbage and only really suitable for generic hard rock and metal stuff where sounding different would be a bad thing.
By the time I'm adding samples, I'd basically describe the original recording as "fucked".

I don't know if there's a "best", but Vengeance has a ton of snare samples. I also like some of these samples. There are so many samples today that browsing through them is a pain, which is why renaming/categorizing them is so important.

I have yet to try to make my own samples with trigger though. How are you doing it? Are you doing multiple velocity samples or just one shots? Seems like a royal PITA. Please explain how you are going about it. I used to do it with sound replacer, but havent tried with trigger.

Please explain how you are going about it. I used to do it with sound replacer, but havent tried with trigger. I just do one hit samples. I tried to do multi velocity samples with Trigger's Instrument Editor but I couldn't make it work right. Plus I'm not trying to do full replacement, just pad the sound a little. All I do is find a sample hit I like, bounce it as a WAV file and then put that WAV into the Trigger "Snares" folder or whatever it is. Then when you open Trigger in your DAW you just load it like you would anything else. It's super easy.

Hey Ragan
follow up trigger question, I notice the Deluxe pack has the newer unprocessed samples. Were you running trigger platinum or Deluxe ?
"The Deluxe set adds 16 Snares, 14 kicks, and 19 toms to your Trigger Drum Library. And these new drums are unprocessed, but recorded with such amazing detail that they will sit in the mix effortlessly. If you want to customize the drum samples, they respond beautifully to eq, compression, and other effects.
thx !
