Don't know why but I find my self now occasionally posting on the purple site, but with this place to have a real discussion I find my self on GS, being short with people and wanting to not too subtlety tell them they are idiots!

No idea why. No longer the only game in town. When guys like John Johnkenn started getting shown the door, I knew something was wrong. I was only too happy to join here early. Every community need a core group of dedicated people, not dedicated asshat celebrities... so, I'm pretty happy that we have this audio production/musician hub to be honest.

Long before Brad & I ever started on the SB. Sorry it puts me in the minority, but it's honestly how I feel. Sometimes there more drama for me here than for me over there. Go figure. I don't hang out where all the GS wankers are (for the most part).

I was invited to potentially be a moderator...but...there were caveats, and ultimately I was turned off on the idea of essentially devoting time to large companies pushing unprofessional products. Also they have a ton of strange bylaws, unwritten rules, and it's a jungle when it comes to writing longer posts. I would treat more involved posts as if they were supposed to be literature over there, so it would help to avoid confusion for people getting their feet wet...same time, some regulars would hassle me at points (I think an older thread about CLA I commented on was dredged up last month when I went on for the first time in ages with a quasi rude post.) I still get thank yous now and then, and have met a lot of cool people through these boards...many of whom have helped me countless times in learning and researching gear, but I much prefer this board...it's a more honest experience most of the time. Incidentally you have given me a lot of great posts to chew on over the years man.

I'm pretty sure by the look of their "High End" audio forum they are still discussing the same two topics that were on there 5 years ago. I'll wait a few more years until someone figures out the answer. Then I'll buy an SM7. Attachments:

One of GS biggest problems we have far less of here is the concept that all our needs are not the same. Anybody who has contacted me for information or opinions knows just like in my gear pimp days I'm not going to suggest or bill something as the "over all best" , I'm going to offer a best solution for your needs and budget! Here I have no problem giving somebody my number and talking gear, and as Tony will tell you I will go to the manufacturer and any other resources at my disposal to answer a question ! I think getting to know each other better and in person makes this place far better, example before I met SVART in person he drove me crazy, after meeting Chris in person talking 1 on 1 and seeing his personality and wealth of Knowledge I'm willing to and want to try and design a 3 way monitor with him! Something get lost in translation over the net even when you speak the same language and have the same interests, once you meet these people in person, or in a smaller group, the personality behind the words becomes more apparent ! Speaking of Chris did I mention sewer robots ?

The differences between here and there are 1) the substance of information and 2) the substance of the individuals providing that information. RGO has so much more of both. I can get more info than I'd ever imagine from a single thread here. I can ask questions without being attacked or being spoken to condescendingly. We keep each other in check most of the time which I believe probably has to do with the average age and maturity level of the RGOers and the experience that goes along with age. I've had countless PM exchanges with great people and even got together with a fellow RGO member (thanks M57) recently and actually recorded some music. Anyone who doesn't see this place as a place for passionate recording musicians who want to support each other through community, well, belongs over there....

Lots of great info and debate from pros. Perfect for a guy like me to learn more about my passion.

Just for fun I give GS sometimes a try. Two days ago someone attacked me because I said I love the 1073 special for Jazz and Blues Guitar. My example was SRV Strat-Stile playing.
Within seconds I was the idiot because SRV was always(?) tracking on MCI consoles.
That lead me to a G-search. Texas Flood was tracked on an MCI and mixed on a ... NEVE.
If those people where as accurate about their arrangements, as they are about gear - the world would be full of great sound.
I did learn one thing on GS. If the sound sucks its in 99,9% of the cases not the gear. I say, get in touch with the universe and write music you like.... its way more important. As much I love asking gear questions I will never forget who is the number one. If it sucks its my fault - something is wrong with arrangement.
For me the hardest thing to do is to critic your own work. Sometimes I think everything I do is great, but I fast have to tell myself that I am not a genius writer.
Yeah its good to have a place like this one.
I can live with critic if its not going to insult someone. That most often happens on GS.
I too think we have many members here which are beyond the 40 that makes a big difference.

Good point. I like to think I was more of a jerk when I was 25 than I am now. :-) I was one at 30 up to 35 and then the days of sanity came slowly. At 38 I stooped drinking and smoking. Now with 41 sanity with gear buys comes slowly. First action was to not upgrade mac OSX and getting in new trouble with spending more money. I want to have this SPL summing desk at 6k in Euro. spl.info/de/produkte/summing-mixing/neos/uebersicht.htmlBut does it makes my songs any better? I guess no. I use my fucked up small mixer which ads some hiss when used with massive headroom.
