The problem with GS is all the EDM idiots, let's be honest. What is EDM?? I honestly don't know and I'm asking.

Let's not forget the Radial/ Jensen Conspiracy ! GS is just a place for people to scream and be proud that they heard themselves ! But the first time 3 or 4 wing nuts go all pscho on yer arse about something intelligent you've said (that they disagree with)... your taste for the place is all but gone. Man, there are some real KOOKS in that bunch. And some of them are moderators. Ha! One in particular comes to mind. He's got the perfect screen name, I'll put it that way.

I still love it when I do a google search on something and an old thread Where guys like our own BoB Olhson , Silvertone , thrill and shipshape and others would provide valuable information. It's sad how many GS has run off over the years. Don't forget Flecher. My opinion they ran him off too. I'd love to get him on this board. Gold mine of knowledge.

Ahh, so it's like hip hop. One doesn't need to know how to play an instrument. Just drop and drag. No wonder it's so popular.

EDM doesn't have to sound like background noise at a train station. I present you this for comparison:

Well, he is playing it an instrument. I mean, it's not like you have to pitch notes on a keyboard or a guitar before you play them. Notes are pre-recorded on a Mellotron. And I'd hate to tell you what if you have to ingest to sound like the singer from Happy Monday's saying "IT'S DARE", but none of it is legal. Safer to sample it.
That said the really modern Tipper-esque loads-of-lovely-samples thing doesn't interest me. It always ends up being a kind of Electro/House thing. But I applaud bringing a performance element to EDM - it's usually so damn boring to watch. I don't understand why anyone watches Boiler Room or any of that DJ stuff.

About "EDM"...this can be practically everything you can dance to. I also went "EDM" for a good part i.e. electronic dance music, which is a wide field of styles in the meantime. Played my Electribes like instruments for a while, it was awesome but frightening somehow. Well, actually they were more perfomance synths than sampler...the better TB303s... In the 90s there was a change in what "techno" was before due to "real" musicians jumping onto the train. Actually, around here it were mostly hard rock and speed/thrash metal guys. It just happened that time that they joined and enjoyed "Goas", the in-events, because of psychedelic drugs and mostly peaceful happenings. Techno Hippies. Then danceable techno went trippy and mixed up with everything resulting in lots of styles...trance, goa, big beat, triphop...and on the other end, metal adopted techno /industrial/electronic stuff, like NDH...Krupps, Oomph!, Rammstein ... Never liked the "progressive" house stuff. Too boring and ear destroying...like hip hop to me. To me electronic music is about possibilities. And, pretty much, ego projects.1-2 guys, some synths and a screaming housewife. (LOL) It's fun actually...think Kraftwerk or Tangerine Dream for dancing in the club and you may get the fun part... Some styles are very, very boring and uninspired, though. I guess, this kind of "DJ" producers is what we are talking about, thinking of GS. Like hip hop without lyrics. Boom boom squashed to death on a laptop. Sigh.

The Hippy Techno/Psytrance/Goa thing is really big in West Ireland and it's fun but ultimately I don't get it. Same for Prog/Deep/Tech/Electro House. Bores the pants off me after 10 minutes. The IDM/Acid side of House can be interesting though - Luke Vibert is a great example of where the format can go, mixing in Avalanche esque sampling, crazy portamento synth lines and infusing DnB and Garage elements.
Good point on the musicians thing, though. Dubstep and Psytrance is full of guitar players - but it's historically true of electronic styles. Beastie Boys were a hardcore band
The "I don't need to know music" DJ's are the ones who keep it samey. Totally hostile to engaging with music on anything but an ego basis - suggesting live instruments as part of a set was something I learned not to do. They're the star. But still the questions come in: How many bars before mute kick and engage HPF? what preset I use? what chord I have to play? Please help I'm trying to be creative. Yeesh.

Can we talk about how awesome is the SM7B!!?!? Me and my friends were just joking about that in real life at the beach, all the while making real music with real musicians and other capable gear not on the "it list." The joke is so big it's just kind of a sad joke. I try to keep a certain amount of garbage from creeping into my head. It's a lot cleaner and more upright here on RGO. What a classy forum, I appreciate it.

Electronic music has warped my mind and I am passionate about it now. I am also still a guitar songwriter. The world of electronic music is as wide and vast as any other contemporary or classical genre once you start to dig into it a bit. On the surface it's like "wtf?" but then the subtleties of style, compostion and sound design really makes for a diverse pallet of sounds. Add sampling real instruments and you have almost any sonic possibility at your fingertips. You have complete control over every sound even beyond what is possible with live virtuosity, the machine, if programmed correctly, is a better player than you will ever be. At least in some ways. This is why I am about to buy a flute and a violin, so I can program them into my songs. I think electronic is seeping into everyone's mind. Even mandolin and banjo players I talk to ask me about synths and drum machines. It's just been an indelible impact on music at large, there are so many hybrid albums now that when you see pure acoustic music, it seems classical in a strange way. I surely feel like the future is electronic.

>>any sonic possibility at your fingertips.<< Why stop there? How about direct neural interfaces? ..where, if you can hear/imagine it, you can perform/realize it. It's all going to happen, and it's only a matter of time. I'm old school, but I don't see how all gear heads can't perceive music born of technological advances as anything but a positive. Most of us do not perform or even listen to Purcell, Bach or Brahms, right? It may not be in vogue, but all music is relevant, and there will likely always be musicians who dedicate themselves to keep its variants alive and well. There will always be drummers, guitarists and singers who use their limbs, fingers, and voices to create music.

It's the "anyone can afford one" $379 microphone that can "blow the head basket" off any neumann and you have to be hip and with it in order to get it and fully understand... and it's the "Look how cool it looks in my video" microphone!! Ever heard an Electro-Voice RE20 or RE27? Those mics are everything an SM7 wants to be if it ever grows up. And i have all of them. Crap, does this count as a "warning worthy" infraction post?

Just a quick example of compositional/musical virtuosity in programmed music. The stuff you catch on the radio is not too good of an example of the possibilities of electronic music, real bottom of the barrel stuff. There's counterpoint harmony going on here as well as a complex and intricate rhythm.

Uhh, I think we're way off topic, no? ;-)
I've been thinking a little bit about this, and must say Support John's implementation of some kind of control system. I'm all for intelligent debate, don't mind differing opinions, but when things cross a line, someone has to reign things in.

I don't think off topic warrants a warning, especially if it's a good segue !
Just saying I thought there were some new comments about the warning system, and there's some weird guy looking at me instead ;-) (I'm not being serious..)

I think RDJ finally needs a warning for all his album covers. Maybe we could print one up and mail it to him in a frame, hahaha.
