Here is the thing , your never going to get a closed mic'ed phase aligned drum set to sound like a single mic! Maybe you would get close if you used omnis, but unlike the Meyer line Array somebody mentioned mics are not designed to sum together ! The Phase and freq response of microphones (except natural omnis) varies at different angles and distance and causes all kinds of fun comb filtering that can sound as unpleasant as the pause or time distortion! So we work with what we are delt now the fun part is analog filters add more phase distortion, even that analog phase alignment tool that is in fact a filter! If only we could recreate spatial relationships with a single mic! The thing with a minimal mic'ed kit is you need 3 yep 3 things that are getting rare in the world of recording 1. A real nice sounding room! 2. A talented Drummer who you can communicate how he can mix the drums with his playing. 3 Time. Yep time to get the right kit, the right mic(s) in the right place(s) and get that perfect take!
But when you get it all it can be magic
