So - just got an email saying there have been updates to V-Control Pro 2. I REALLY want it...but I'll be damned if I will pay their $50 a year subscription. Mind you, it's something I would use every session...but I just DESPISE the idea of everyone going to subscription. $50/year is pretty steep. What's the difference between that and Basic V-Control? I used V-Control back when I was running Pro Tools, and it was pretty feature-loaded back then. Also, and as much as I liked the wireless functionality, I'm much happier with the X-Touch. I have it on a wheeled stand with about 15' of cable. There's something about turning an actual jog ..and pushing actual buttons ..and zero lag.

Hah, just saw the e-mail in my inbox. You'd want one of those big new oversized iPads for some of those features, wouldn't you? ..and I'm just wondering which of those features are you thinking about paying that kind of money yearly for? The wired connection? Original screen plug-in control? Didn't the original have that? ..and as I recall, the lag for features like that was untenable when I had it. I'd much rather have a mouse in my hand. Even I don't use the V-Control for those kinds of things because the knobs are detented.

When I used Pro Tools the Frontier Design Tranzport was great. Since I've switched to Presonus Studio One, their free Ipad app is even better. Just like have the mixing desk on my ipad.

Honestly don't remember. I do think it was the OSX though. I just bought a wireless keyboard and that has served the purpose...The V-Control is tempting because I could use the transport section on an iphone. Big graphics that serve a simple purpose. The original V-Control - while it works fine - it's tedious. Ohhhhhh how I wish there was another hardware wireless controller.

The original V-Control - while it works fine - it's tedious. Ohhhhhh how I wish there was another hardware wireless controller. I still don't understand why there isn't an affordable two piece wireless system where one part plugs into the USB port of a controller (like the X-Touch), and the other into the USB port on the computer. I think someone explained it here before - something about the bandwidth required. I mean, why can't Wi-fi support this?

what you are asking for is wireless usb ... also known as.. Bluetooth.
until recently, Bluetooth has been included but never required by most devices. Now even a raspberry pi 3 for 35 dollars has an included Bluetooth 4.0 chip. Bluetooth 4 finally gets the signal far, reliably, with very little latency. I tried using Bluetooth headphones on a drummer back in the day, and the latency introduced by the Bluetooth made it impossible. That was Bluetooth 1 or 2. It's inherently cheaper to develop a usb device that everyone's computer comes with. The other half is the absence of a hardware interface driver for usb to Bluetooth. Really smart people can make one, but they will charge a lot to license it, where most peripherals selling for ~$500 (xtouch), keep their costs to about $100 MAX. I wouldn't be surprised if it was more in the range of $50.
While we all sweat the industry, it's still a niche market, and usb works for 90% of all applications where things are being recorded, which is on a desk. I personally would love to have a Bluetooth mouse/keyboard/peripherals all running together. Which brings me to the final issue. 1 Bluetooth adapter per, normally. USB and thunderbolt and firewire can daisychain very easily. While it can be done, it's not as easy for Bluetooth from what I've read. That could have also been due to previous versions of Bluetooth.
I've..uh..thought about this a little.

Maybe I should develop an affordable Bluetooth transport. Just turn on the computer and it works. No freaking "peripherals" searching.

What's wrong with that PT Control App? does Cubase not support Eucon?

Tranzport was killed my APPLE's OS/driver changes.....not ProTools.
FWIW. Just to clarify something said above. Windows, it still works fine in 64bit DAWs...whether they have specific extensions like cubendo or just piggy back on Mackie protocols.

I'm happy that Logic includes a free controller app for mobile devices. I've used neyrinck for years, but I'm not into the subscription model at all.

The pro tools app is awful. The Cubase app crashes when you hit play. Somewhat important.
