I also just moved to the Avid artist mix which is cool but I only have 8 faders. Moving from 32 analog to 8 is a tough adjustment. The Tascam piece looks cool. I don't understand why more people aren't jumping into a 16-24 channel controller. Maybe it's too much of a niche market. I researched a ton before settling on the Eucon controller. Everything was either old technology that the knowledgeable guy could rig to get working or outrageously expensive (S3) Eucon seemed to be the safest platform. I'm limping along trying to decide if I should add to my Artist Mix or wait for something cooler and more affordable comes out. Anyone have thoughts on the presonus piece? www.presonus.com/products/studiolive-cs18ai

At least i know that the guys at Sequencer.de/Moogulator made extensive Wiki notes about the configuration internals of the BCF2000 after some serious research and re-engineering. Could be called "hacking handbook" for the behringer firmware. Unfortunately in german, but maybe you get the picture with google translate or so.... Btw, i had some conversation with Frank about surface controls, mackie control protocol, the BCF2000 etc.. Yeah, Frank is one of the insane DIYers, in the most positive sense. Stacking up BCF and BCR with wooden sidepanels for console-like controllers, using the BCF internals to automate his Harrison32, building virtual and hardware mackie protocol meterbridges and scribblestrips etc.pp.. He is an awesome guy to deal with, polite, humorous and pragmatic and always good for a creative brainstorming session about these kind of topics. He is the kind of guy, that, when everybody in the DIY community bitches about where to get good inductors for EQs, just bought a winding machine, and now does excellent frontpanel and casing work with his nifty DIY CNC that has some cool things (like the mechanism to prevent frontpanel surface damage due to metal shavings). He can design audio pcbs that actually work :-D and generally teaches himhelf in every field he gets interested in. A DIY Maker and maniac. Unfortunately his days only have 24 hours, like ours. :-D Oops, forgot the BCF link: www.sequencer.de/synth/index.php/B-Control-Konfiguration

screen captureHere's a pretty old pic from years ago. The newer desk with artist mix is far more ergonomic. Less... steam punk. Nah its still punk rock as hell.

I deleted my account but the best one i found was a bcf yahoo group. Thats where i got all the info. Light sensing might be the wrong term. It works like a sensormatic senser which are the big things at department stores that stop tagged items from leaving the store.

What they need to come up with is an affordable dedicated hardware controller for plug ins. Something i could rack or have on my desktop. But yes they also need to make an updated tascam. That's incredibly interesting about it working with 8. I read there were a few drivers developed by users that made it work in 7. Im positive actually. One dude built a little website dedicated to 7 drivers for the us-2400. I think tascam thought the dm3200 would take the us2400's place. As you all know the dm3200 is considered the worlds biggest mouse.

Just to make it clear. In the end, right now the US-2400 works with everything, Win7, Win8.1, Linux, every system that has a generic class compliant usb-audio driver. At momentary patch/update level Win7 and 8/8.1 *should* be able to work with the US-2400 *right out of the box*! Unfortunately, sometimes manufacturers bring own versions of USB audio or midi drivers that *can*, under circumstances, f*ck up which driver is installed when another USB audio device is plugged in. And of course - a tweaked driver for a special device might not work with your next one from another manufacturer. And then - you are often screwed. Try out to install the different drivers that show up if you install the driver manually. Not funny if eventually proprietary and system driver have even the same name. Sigh. AFAIK for a long time Ploytec made the most used proprietary usb audio driver before windows brought his own that really worked flawlessly. They sold the support of devices to the hardware manufacturers, which obviously was cheaper for the most, than developing and maintaining an own one. Audio driver programming for windows is *no fun at all*. Been there, done that. Plus - you then have to let them get certified by MS to get them properly installed by your customers without using developer modes of the kernel at startup. All not funny and expensive.... The Windows generic driver for usb audio was looooong overdue, and still does not even support version 2 of usb class compliant audio devices fully (or at all?). I guess they wanted to come up to one level with Apple and get rid of support requests and complaints in this area...

Tranzport has 64bit Windows drivers. FWIW. All the MAc guys who stopped finding them useful should send their unused antiques to me, where I will use them for the rest of my life.
That said--I don't consider it a "DAW controller"....I still have the 17 fader MCU, but the usefulness is tied directly to Cubase v6. As soon as I'm forced to upgrade, they become like they are for any other software--a bunch of faders to scroll around the virtual mixer. #pass. That means OX.8 and Win7 are the end of the line for C6, thus the MCUs for me. But, those are fully 64bit OSs that support a lot of hardware. So....I'm not sure that's as limiting as it might first appear.

BTW: The Behringer X-Touch gets very mixed reviews because many feature do not yet function as advertised. This disappointed quite some customers.
Another MCU alternative, even lower priced as the X-Touch, but with mostly good reviews and very little obstacles (sometimes buttons get stuck, but seems to be no biggie and seems to not nearly affect the usability as bad as it sounds....), is the Icon QCon Pro. Looks like a very sturdy control surface with a modern look, good functionality and of partly better quality with some hardware parts than the MCU itself. Which is impressing at this low price point. Plus - it is big. Good thing. Haptics and less buttons pressed erroneously. No joke, this is also a very good thing with the Tascam....

But I don't think those reviews are relevant (most are for the X-Touch compact, right?). I'm pretty sure the flagship X touch is new to the market, so I don't see how there could be that many extant reviews. In the new video for the X-Touch at Sweetwater, it looks like everything works, at least on Logic - though now that I think of it, I don't remember seeing the jog being used in the demo.

People who bought it said, it's better not to use the jog shuttle. Well - that did not sound good. As i read, it should feel quite cheap or even unstable.... Direct support for the X32 or X-Air via network is not implemented in current firmware and the announcement seems to have changed from "BEHRINGER X32 remote control" to "future BEHRINGER X32 remote control" After years of announcement and development, there is no manual available. Just a quick starter doc. That is what i could extract for the spare reviews i read. I know, that some people already gave back their X-Touches because of these issues. Sure, it is new on the market. And has some nice features, rtp midi, class compliance etc.. The Icon controller i mentioned already has undergone firmware updates, that make it compatible to all major DAWs. Behringer is still in the beginning. But really, how long are they working on this device since it was first announced? And as it seems, in the first firmware version that went out house the scribble strip went black under Cubase. Really? OK, they fixed that, but i can understand that some customers are a bit pissed because of these points. And concerning drivers and firmwares and their updates there have been *some* devices of B. that left a bad taste in the past... Don't get me wrong - i am no behringer basher *at all* and in fact used many of their products and still do. And most of behringer bashing on the internet is pointless and stereotypic or even untrue. "Behringer is noisy." and generalizations like that....

I had no idea the US-2400 is totally compatible with 7. That certainly clears up the Tascam being the go-to for 24 channel daw controllers. I wanted one for a long time but was afraid of the lack of support. Other wise its a mcu and extensions or several $1000s of dollars of artist mix's or the Qcon and a few extensions. If I didn't find the artist mix for the price I did I would have gotten the Qcon. I might still trade the artist in for one if Studio 1 keeps giving me problems with it (the artist mix intermittenly drops out from time to time which requires me to close Studio 1 and is a giant PITA). From what I've read the Qcon is user friendly and feels robust. The new version looks slick. The mcu is too big for my needs since I use a console with the daw controller. Unfortunately the avid transport doesnt work with Studio One 2.6 which sucks. Works grest in PT. It's a shame about the x-touch. Maybe wait it out a few more months and theyll correct all the hiccups. Its got a lot to offer but unsurprisingly Behringer just didn't seem to come through with all of it working correctly.

Hi guys, if anyone is having problems getting an usb class compliant audio or midi device, controller, whatever working under Windows, here is a nice sum up on how to get rid of the issue. I checked it, and it's pretty much describing everything i have come across when having usb audio driver issues with several devices, OSes and configurations on PCs. Even if you have one of the rare occasions where the class compliant system driver is fucked up, for whatever reason, there is even zips with fixes and drivers that should get you back to functionality. Note there is no Win8 driver contained. I have not heard of any issues under Win8 so far, the driver should be available under Win 8 and work flawlessly from the start, never had a single prob with usb class compliant audio. But in case he is not, one *could* try the Win7 driver on his own risk. www.numark.com/kb/article/1619

Well I had another session today with the mc mix/artist mix just not come through for a bit. Everytime I have to restart the hui protocol in eucon which requires me to restart my computer to be implemented. This is ridiculous. I made the studio so I could just plop down and get to work and spending 30 minutes so that my daw controller is usuable really puts a damper on that. I want to just turn the thing on and go. Several times when this has happened I just say "F it" and use the mouse. Qcon looking better and better.

I understand totally. I had the PC, 2 generations before my actual, configured in a way, that i came into the room, touched a US2400 fader, and the machine woke up via usb from hibernation mode into "come on, let's party". It's great to only touch your tool and are right back in the session you left last time...

Studio one 2.6 I had been and still use PT 10. But I just got used to Studio One and am trying my damndest to get off Avid's tit. Studio One 3 I guess supports it. So I guess its just a matter of what do I want more; to upgrade to stidio one 3 or get another daw controller. I honestly just want to be done with it.

I also have the Artist Mix and I am on Protools 11. Even with that I seem to lose the network communication every once in a while and I have to reboot the computer so everything talks again. It is annoying.

Ive never had a problem but my computer is connected via an ethernet cable to the router that the artist mix is connected to. Are you using WiFi to connect your computer to your router?

No its going to an unmanaged switchbox. I tried direct into the back of the pc but that wasnt great. I then went to the router which gave me the same results. And yes in PT 10 it still drops but in Studio one sometimes it wont even see it and I have to close it, then refresh it through eucon hui, then restart studio 1, then remove it from the list of ctlrs, then put it back on, and then it works. Sonetimes PT gives me a message that it had trouble communicating. Otherwise its an awesome controller. When it works that is.

Here's my round up of the least expensive hardware DAW controllers that have motorized faders. Any thoughts on these? Especially the X-Touch, which are pretty new to the market and reviews are scarce. Behringer BCF 2000 $300 Behringer X-Touch compact $400 Behringer X-Touch $600 PreSonus Fader Port $130 As I mentioned before, I'm already using the Logic App for ipad, but pretty much exclusively remotely, like when recording and I'm away from the box. I never touch the app mixer and end up mousing at the computer. ...X-Touch isn't released yet...looks great...I've had success with the BCF2000 and the Presonus Faderport...Faderport is excellent (I wish they made an extended version with 8 faders)...if I can't find a clean US2400 then the X-Touch looks to be my next controller... Sweetwater has the X-Touch in stock and available for sale.

Yeah but id hold out. Lots of problems right now. Do you remember how bad MOTU drivers were? You had the choice of about 10 pcs.. maybe. Mac was pretty much fine but windows users had to dig for the correct mobo in order for their $1500 core system to work. Lots of pissed off people at any rate. Now. The 424 card is nearly plug and play. I anticipate the same for the x-touch. They put way too much into it to just let it fail and thry know the market needs more daw control options.

So - just got an email saying there have been updates to V-Control Pro 2. I REALLY want it...but I'll be damned if I will pay their $50 a year subscription. Mind you, it's something I would use every session...but I just DESPISE the idea of everyone going to subscription.
