So sorry for my miscommunication. It was a great idea to have a few guys get together, but easier said than done, I guess.
I have a rehearsal scheduled tonight, so I wouldn't be able to make it there. Could make it on Friday, are you around then?

Martin do you have a spdif cable ? You will need one to hook the svatacus rex 5000 to your apollo ?

ok, so it seems like the plan is gonna be to let MJB take the unit to his studio in Manhattan for a few days and then he'll send it off to jcoutu1. I was hoping to get a listening hang going, but that didn't develop. Martin, by all means, go for it when you have the unit if you can.

What was your final impression, Chuck?

I heard deficiencies in both converters. I'll miss the transient response and top end, but that's it. If it was an interface with 16 channels and a dope software implementation, he would take over. I'm good with the symphony as it stands. Down the road, i might look at adding a 2ch D/A, but it would have to be really amazing to justify the 1-2% increase in aural performance, you know?

So, the Svart has slightly better top end but not enough to make you want to consider adding it to your Symphony?

If you think Svart's box is slightly better on top and transients, then I would say, "success!"

I can only clock the D/A to it, so the A/D side is useless to me. Also, to use it, i'd have to buy a good monitor controller. I'd like to hear Dan's Super Beast with his mods to know what that unit sounds like. I thought the symphony was better in the overall listening experience. While the Svart had a tighter transient response, the symphony is just more fun and more 3D to listen to, to my ears.

Guess it comes down to relative value, I have have an apollo and svart's box at his price represents a really cost effectiveness way to increase the sound quality of my experience. For the sake of comparison, buying a symphony would represent a very significant increases over the cost of the svartbox for not an equivalent increase in sound quality . Granted I could sell my apollo but then I also lose 4 on board dsp for ua plugs and and other parts of the UA experience.
So, the svart box looks like very good value from my perspective.

Well, when you buy the svart box, you're only replacing 2 channels going in and 2 channels going out of the apollo. When you buy a symphony you're replacing all 8 channels going in and all out going 8 on the apollo. So, you can't really compare them the way you are.

I'll miss the transient response and top end, but that's it. aren't those 2 kind of critical things to miss? lol

it's a very slight difference. I haven't used it in a few days, and I don't miss it. I can accomplish the same high-end thing with a +1db shelf around 7.5K on the symph with the lowest Q factor in the Logic X Channel EQ.

So, you can't really compare them the way you are. yes I understand or the other way of looking at it is I am adding 2 higher end AD and DA channels. I am typically doing 1-2 channels recording and then I have the increased resolution of the DA. Also losing the apollo would reduce my uad dsp by 30%, so a trade off.

The RM piece was important to Apollo users, because many who felt they would like better converters, now had a chance to add them without paying as much as the unit itself costs. Since then, UAD has released new Apollos and claims improvement to the converters.
It would be fantastic if we were able to compare the new Apollo, with and without the svartbox. For me, if the converter quality was close between the new Apollo and the svartbox, I'd likely upgrade my Apollo, if not, I'd grab the svartbox.
Well, Chuck's kindly stopping by on Monday with the prototype, so I'l try to track something with the svartbox and the Apollo mk I converters to compare.

It'll be interesting to see if you hear the same stuff we heard when we shot the ADC out with an apollo at john's place a few months back.

It'll be fun to try, for sure. When I tried just the BLA Micro Clock, I could hear an obvious improvement over the Apollo, so I'm looking forward to giving the newer converters a go. I'l try to track something simple on Tuesday.

my friend Kevin has a studio in Williamsburg and he got one of those new Apollos. he used to run PT HD with Omni's. I was hoping to link up with him as well and have him hear it, but that didn't work out.

Mjb, if you have the time, try and stack a few tracks through the ad on the svart and apollo. Even a 15 second clip of a song with two guitars, bass, and a couple Vocals/harmonies. I think with a bunch of tracks stacked you can get a better idea of the sound of the box.
