A back up singer goes off into the crowd at about 3:40 into Justin's performance. There is loud audio noise at the same time. The mics were live.

It's just bad music, and she's a mediocre singer, so what else is there for her to do if she wants to stay in the spotlight, but play against type, and go skank. She probably saw it work for Christina Aguilera and figured if she went a few steps further, she'd get the attention she wants. Aguilera has chops though. Some people will say she's "pushing the envelope", I'd say she's pushing the self-destruct button. Her ploy worked beautifully, but will most likely backfire. It's not like Rhianna or Beyonce` haven't gone there, Cyrus just went lower.

sex sells, nothing new here.
What I want to know is why does she have her tongue hanging out for 75% of the performance as well as pretty much every picture she's been in?

The Beetlejuice suit was unreal.
I dig this one though...

White tongue is generally a sign of being slightly dehydrated.

I hesitate to post this, but what the hell.
I enjoyed Miley's performance. I thought it was sexy, edgy, and the singing was in tune. What more could you ask for? Obviously the audience liked it too. So what's the problem?

Well, obviously it is subjective...but I would argue that is was neither sexy or in tune. I'm not some super conservative slagger, but that was just appealing to nothing but the lowest common denominator. I actually like the song - but that performance was just lame. It's the continual dumbing down of our culture. Lady Gaga - sans face - looked hot. Miley did not.

Yep, subjective... Sexy/edgy or desperate/uncool. I agree on the latter. I'm not conservative or a moral preacher at all, and I don't disrespect people diggin stuff like that, but I long for other role models for all young girls out there. Had some close encounter with anorexia (not me) earlier in my life and that changed my view completely. So the audience liking it doesn't exactly make it better.

So what's the problem? --Ethan If you saw the photos of Will Smiths face as well as his daughters you would be led to believe they weren't enjoying it. I don't know anyone that supports her performance, 100% childish and a total lack of class, but that's MTV in a nutshell.

My initial reaction is to turn off the computer , cancel my internet and cable TV , turn off the radio and move to the mountains far away from all human society and live as survivorman , because if we've gone from the Beatles on Ed Sullivan to this........I don't see much hope for the future generations.....

And i think the quick has a unique and good voice. my 2 cents

Hm, sometimes i don't get you american guys. After i read something about 'scandal performance' i watched it, expecting to see a scandal, and thought: "Well, somebody wants to get out of the disney puppet suit to continue a career after puberty, so what? Making a bit of a sexy cat, showing tongue (come on, a bit of Gene Simmons is not THAT bad), a bit of skin plastic nudeness, :-) surprising moment, a bit too dry voice and her beeing a bit out of breath...ok singing...so what? I've seen much worse and more embarassing..."
A funny thought, i had immediately, was, that if she had performed in Berlin or Amsterdam, noboby would have seen anything like a scandal at all. In fact i remember seeing Kate Perry with a prude typical american lollipop performance pretending to be sexy at the European Music Awards. Well, that was kind of vicarious embarassment - it didn't work for european audience at all...
Yeah, perception is very subjective indeed.... A matter of the point of view...
Best regards, Martin

Maybe you could keep Katy Perry in the US and pass Miley over to Europe for further development into a classy club music act? Just an idea.....
