First of all a formal hello- I have returned to the forum, missing the banter. It's nice to see the same faces around, and I've enjoyed being back. But more importantly - my home country is about to become the first to legalize gay marriage. Pretty amazing stuff. Sadly we don't have the postal vote so I couldn't participate, but it's been crazy to watch! www.rte.ie/news/vote2015/2015/0523/703205-referendum-byelection/The real question is how long before it's legal everywhere in the west?

Congrats man! Down here in argentina it's been legal since 2010. In fact, the first couple to be married is getting a divorce... But all kidding aside, civil rights for everyone is the way to go!!

Haha, I saw jokes like that back home. "Why should only straight couples have to suffer? Vote Yes!" Hopefully it's a move towards a more secular Ireland. Now if only we could get back 90% of our schools from the Church. That'd be just great..

Canada has legal gay marriage.
Unfortunately, we also still have separate public and Catholic school systems. The Church can't give up the schools, where would the priests get their little boys from?

Tell you what, you come back and enjoy the forum, but how about a little respect for the people that died at the World Trade Center? I'm not sure what purpose that Avatar serves, but I know how it makes me feel.

I second that. Have some respect. Couldn't care less what gays want to do. Have at all you want but change that Avatar. Innocent people died at the hands of a bunch of idiots and you post an Avatar like that? Not cool. Change it or leave.

This is true, but our schools have mostly banned the priests from teaching. However one sits on every single school board in the country and they can veto what they like - meaning they've as much input on syllabus as the principle. And in Ireland we don't have 2 seperate streams because when we opened our schools we were too impoverished to self run them, so the Church took over the buildings and ran them on our behalf. Sorry if you guys found the image offensive - for the record, it's a parody of conspiracy theorist nonsense. I guess at least now if they want to, the conspiracy theorists can leave things like Climate Change and 9/11 alone, come to Ireland and get married.

Couldn't care less what gays want to do. I did apologize that and I don't retract it. And for the record I acknowledge 9/11 as being a personal tragedy for the families who lost people at that time. However it's interesting that people bring up my avatar, after a month with no one saying anything or sending a PM, react to this now of all times. In 2010 the suicide rate was 38,364. In 2005 4,400 alone were under the age of 25. Do the math and you'll see that's a good bit more than 9/11 every year. If you think this is less important then you're a hypocrite at best and a backwards homophobe at worst.

I just saw that you were back about two weeks ago...and noticed the avatar about a week later. I was immediately annoyed by it, but I tried to let it go...but I couldn't. I appreciate you changing it. As for gay marriage...I think it's a bigger issue in this country than it should be. What business is it of anyone's what people do in their private lives?

I think the difference is that suicide is a personal choice. 9/11 was a couple dudes forcing their own choices on 3,000+ other people without them being given a chance to say 'yes I want to participate in this' or 'nah, i'd rather not participate'.

Hey Jazz, people in the US have really lightened up on the whole LGBT thing as of late, the supreme court is going to be hearing a case that should finish the whole thing, and people will be required by law to mind their own business from that point forward. I don't understand why someone would choose to be gay?(meaning i don't believe it's a choice) I don't know why anyone would hold it against anyone who is gay? The one thing I know with certainty, is it's none of my damn business. I think the majority of people here feel this way. Congrats on your country figuring it out and doing the right thing. glad your back bud 8) Btw, didn't really get that 911 avatar either, it made me feel uneasy, but wasn't sure what it meant, so i just kept quiet about it, glad you changed it.

Hammer meet nail As every 5 year old finds out, holding your breath till you die isn't really feasible. So I think it's fair to say killing yourself isn't exactly a choice. It's a psychological mindset driven by suicidal ideation caused by intense despair. Most body reactions are set up to avoid it - self drowning and suffocation can not be done simply using the body, likewise self stabbing is extremely difficult. Even shooting yourself, most people wont manage. Most people I've ever known to try it OD'd and actually did it hung themselves. 2 in high school, 1 was a friend of a friend. Though with youth unemployment of 20% plus in my areas we had people patrolling the river most nights to stop people throwing themselves in - actually, one guy I did knew also seemingly threw himself in. With no witnesses it was hard to say. He'd gotten a cab about 40 minutes outside town at 3 am, though. You don't have the freedom to see no other alternative than to kill yourself. It's a state of extreme psychological distress induced by environmental conditions - in this case, wider social issues of rejection.

ok...but see you're missing the key phrase in "killing yourself" - "yourself." You are ultimately responsible for your own actions. (Although it seems there is ZERO sense of personal responsibility anymore) And anyway, this wasn't what the problem was about - it was comparing the LGBT suicide rate to the mass murder of 3000 people. Obviously, two very sad things that this "off topic" category was not intended to cover.

Lol I was wondering how this topic would go over on this forum. Glad to see it has been kept open and respectful, and without any of the capricious censorship one would see at GS.

Sadly, as a Christian who has always been happy to see gay folk suffer the pains of marriage and divorce, like the rest of us... I find that there is a category of folks I am at odds with:
The LEFT.
It's like a grab-bag of crazy: Deny 911. Hate Christians. LBGT rights. Gay Marriage. Pro-'Palestine' and anti-Israel. Support Islam because it hates Christians, yet ignore that Muslims routinely marriage-rape little girls, mutilate their genitals, throw gays from the tops of buildings or hang them or behead them... and that gets no mention. Show up at anti-petroleum rallies in Seattle in kayaks made from petroleum. Free drugs for everyone...except no consideration for what drugs are doing to society.
The LEFT are the biggest bunch of hypocrites on the planet and the reason there isn't more support for gay suffering (marriage) is because you all bring so many other wing-nut ideas with you.
