Focal Twin 6BEs here. They translate fairly well, but I sometimes find the bottom octave to be a bit of a guessing game. And yes, my room is well treated.

Thanks keymod, I didn't read that as an insult, I was just being a little tongue in cheek, but sometimes online it comes off differently :-)
I've heard probably 75% or more of the popular two way speakers that are available, and the Abbey is in a completely different class. In that class, I'd have to hear it A-B'd with the competition. I'd suspect the Barefoot would be better, but I did hear the $3,000 Tridents and preferred the Abbey, so it's viable for sure.

I'm the guy with Barefoots. Gen 1, MM-27s. I sold my trusty NS-10s a month after I got the BFs. I mixed on those NS-10s with Yamaha p series amps and a powered Speaker City sub for a decade.

Mains (well, mid-field) trusty old Tannoy System 12s I've had for 24 years. Used for tracking mostly. Completely trustworthy. √ Nearfields, Neumann 120As (I'm trying to figure out how to pluralize that without a ' before the s). Completely UGLY and mixes on them sound better on everything else. √ I've also got some KRK 8s and others that aren't even plugged in.

Nothin' fancy. HS50's and some Sennheiser HD-25 MK II headphones back home. When I get some superchunks built I'll consider a sub or a system with a larger low end output.

Eric, These little KEF's are very interesting speakers. I very much dig the concentric thing, and the reviews on these speakers were fabulous across the board. So I bought them without hearing them.
Was confused a bit by them in the beginning, but funny enough, I just mixed a few things on them and just them, as I was changing my big monitors to the Unity Boulder and only had the KEF's hooked up for a week. I must say, probably some of the best mixes that have come out of my new room. Totally amazed by the end product. They don't play too loud, but resting on the meter bridge it's not a big deal. Initially I was hearing too much bass, so I filled the port plugs with the supplied foam plugs, and now they translate wonderfully. Very cool !
Keith, Yes, I had the very last NEW set of "Big Reds"that was Bob Berliners personal pair, but didn't have room for them any longer... Mainly due to lack of space here in the new place.
They really looked cool, but were terrible speakers for anything serious! I liked my Urie 813, 815's and Tannoy FSM much better!

I listened to the new Barefoots - they were big...I mean, they sound good, but I was telling the sales guy I thought they sounded a little mid forward. He said they lack a little in the low mids and maybe that's what I was hearing. I don't think the BF's would be my first choice.

Harbeth's are supposed to be really good. I've always wanted to hear them. From your choices, it seems like you were an audiophile before being an audio engineer.

From your choices, it seems like you were an audiophile before being an audio engineer. i definitely was not an audiofile. that world always seemed non musical to me. i ended up in this spot kinda backwards thru working with speakers and finding stuff that i related to in the control room. proacs since 2002, the honest friend you've never had. harbeths from wanting the same honesty with a little more extended bottom end. and i loved the B&W's from my one time at abbey road. something about british speakers.....

Hm, the times of audiophile hifi stereo is due in this century. Many manufactureres headed for the multimedia market, tv multichannel, design over quality, streaming technology etc. and dumped their "real audiophile" lines that could partly compete with pro-audio studio monitors in terms of flatness and resolution or could be used as this. Very little exceptions. E.g. mentioned Sonus Fabers...

Harbeth's and B&W are mainly high end hi-fi speakers, although I don't know of every Harbeth model. You've got good taste in speakers there Rob !
My little Sonus Faber Toys, paired with the smallest REL sub drops people's jaws when they hear them. The REL uses a Neutrik Speakon connector that terminates in two skinny speaker wires., they piggyback directly on the speaker terminals, and the sub fires time aligned with the monitors. REL calls it an ambient retrieval system. They're kinda right too. With the REL, I can sense and feel the space.
It must be fun to crank those big ass B&W's once in a while Rob. I used to have 5 B&W 805's and two big REL subs in my home theater system. That $hit rocked the house, literally. I sold it all when I was ill to pay the bills.

Honestly Martin your absolutely right and your absolutely wrong about B&W and Harbeth. While they are audiophile favorites, In the world of classical they are as Standard studio and mastering speakers as NS10s are to 80s rock! Also Harbeth and REL have used Volt LF drivers which are what made me a Quested fan for many of their products! I guess you could say Harbeth and B&W are a lot like PMC and ATC and well now Amphion in that they serve both the consumer and pro. One of my very favorite large systems of all time is the very rare B&W 808. It was the short lived Rock version of the 801, basically 2 801s in a cabinet ! I remember being at a Dealer in Chicago when they got there first pair and the young guy hooking them up didn't understand that these were big and efficient not big and power hungry . He hooks them up to a pair Mcintosh 500w per ch amps bribed with no attenuation ! Kid almost blew the windows out ! One of the pairs that Smart had lives at my good freinds Audio for The Arts now!

Hey Martin, I might have asked before, but what did you think of the 805's. I'm really interested in a pair to add to the studio.
