Haha , don't use any Eq on the kick . I can already hear the 350hz cardboard kick sound in my head .
I don't have 421's , but i do have Sennheiser e604's , probably not very close but they do say Sennheiser . I took the bottom skins off and gonna stick those inside the toms .
I love this drum sound from T-Rex and also Kiss .

Senheiser MD 421's close on toms? or SM57s, or SM56s or 609s or even EV 635s!!! I think 421s sound too modern. LOL

SM57's surprised me on toms. The presence gives you a nice bite and the proximity effect seems to give you extra low end without alot of the 300-500hz something I'd usually end up EQ'ing in to make a Tom sound "deeper".
Never tried my EV635a on a Tom. I've put it about halfway between the beatside of the kick and the bottom of the snare to good results before, and it's a nice overhead choice when the player uses brushes.
