Took the Brute over to Sal's and just did a quick little comparison. We didn't sweat over it too much - tried to match levels. Really just trying to see if the Brute could match up tonally and how it dealt with compression compared to the Sta-Level. Shot for getting around -20 db gain reduction on the highest peak on the Sta. Around the same for the Brute. I think the Brute sounded a little better with the 250Hz hipass engaged, so there's one included with that. Original no compression - snd.sc/146RdBnSta-Level (double attack/med release) with -20 peak GR - snd.sc/19TMzpyBrute with -20(ish) peak GR - snd.sc/1cp3LnSBrute -10(ish) GR on peak - snd.sc/15FZpahBrute -10(ish) GR on peak with 250Hz HPF - snd.sc/1cp45mwSorry - Files are no longer available

We both thought the Brute was pretty damn awesome. The Sta might have a little more goo and chest while the Brute was a little more transparent.
I'm very impressed with how smoothly it handles the gain reduction though. To the point it was negligible to me. The Sta certainly has more gain and is the more powerful box...but it's also $1600 more dollars. The Brute is a SERIOUS alternative.

I TRULY don't hear that huge a difference. Seriously. I really should have put these in a blind file. I WANT the Sta to just blow it out of the water so it wouldn't be any question...but the differences are really minute to my ears.

If i had seen those brute's on GS last week for $650 a piece, i would have bought one. Both sound great. I also cant hear a massive difference. Sta is ahead, but not by much.

So has anyone put the Retro Double Wide up against a STA? I know its somewhat of a "little brother" to the STA . I wonder how close it is?

I didn't think it sounded anything like the Sta. IMHO it had a real mid-range honk.

John, you really gotta get on the DIY bandwagon. you can build a STA-level from Drip for like $900 including case.

As Sal said - if money were no object...the Sta is the choice.

There aren't any soundfiles anywhere I can find...And it's just not a beginner's project. The drip kit gives you options to upgrade the electronics to create a cleaner or more HI FI unit, or you can stick to the traditional route, there is no voodoo in this stuff, get great transformers and tubes, there's a new jj6386 tube that is supposed to be insanely good($99?), and of course the sowter tranny, use atom vintage style axial caps or audiophile caps. It's a versatile beast. I will be building one(or 2?) as soon as they're back in stock, i'll let you know. When i'm done, If anyone with an original sta- is in my area, id be happy to hook up for the creation of a blind comparison test to post up at realgear?? That would be fun!! www.dripelectronics.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=31&Itemid=59T

What about the release mod? Sta isn't worth much without the faster releases...

here's a groupdiy thread on the release mod, pretty easy peasy, i would like to know dan's take on all this stuff as he's pretty much a jedi of diy, and is seemingly always nails on! www.groupdiy.com/index.php?topic=10134.0

I'm gonna see if any of my pals that built the drip STA would run a few files thru it for me. If so, I'll post then against my STA.

OK, my bud said he'd process the same vocal file posted here thru his Drip STA. Should have that in a few days.
