...there's been some interest in 3U Audio SDC GZ74 condenser mics, but up till now we've not had any specifics beyond what info is available on the website...an associate of mine reached out to Guosheng for a bit more info and this was his response: "The GZ74 SDC capsules are similar to (Neumann's) KM183/184/185 and circuitry is similar to (AKG's) C451B, transformerless." ...these are available as singles as well as matched pairs...anyone interested can reach out for direct pricing and any additional info via 3uaudio@gmail.com... ...finally had a chance to test out the 3U Audio GZ251fet yesterday...I expected it to be similar to the Warbler MK IV, but it's actually quite different...even more vintage sounding, almost "tube-like"...and the AMI T8 transformer (BV.08 style tranny sized like a smaller T14) definitely gives this mic some mid response mojo...very interesting... ...here's a quick VO test I did: GZ251fet: app.box.com/s/vljbm6dmthcbqt80cpgfh5kmovy3cs5rAttachments:

They sound cool I like the Warbler 1 I have written to the guy to see how much for me here in Oz seems like a bit of a no brainer... they sound cool.. I could use both when I have "knuckleheads" in the studio and I put the vintage stuff away 8) cheers Wiz Did you ever grab one of these wiz? I thought you'd be the absolute perfect person to shoot out a Warbler I with your own U87. I might pick up a couple of the new multi-patterned Warbler I's when they're released. Would love to hear the Warbler on your vocal.....

Damn you and your will power wiz . So I just read this whole thread and want to thank kidvybes and ragan for taking the time to post these clips. I think I'll be picking up a pair of the new multi-patterned Warbler I's when they become available. I need some versatile, workhorse mics badly.........

Great post again kid. That mic sounds excellent. I get the "vintage" vibe, but I've used two original U47 FET's, and the $1500 Lauten Atlantis, and from what I can hear, I like this one better, if you want that vibe. I have the AMI/TabFunkenwerk BV-8LP in my UM17 Blueline. Mine sounds quite like an M-49. Oliver Archut said it was somewhere between a U47 and an M-49, and he would know better than me. So you're correct if you're feeling a little 47ish vibe from the Warbler. The BV-08 is a part of that I imagine.

I kept putting off getting a Warbler I. Maybe a good a thing since a more versatile version is upcoming. Wonder what the price increase will be on the newer one?

wondering if it's possible to get an opinion of how the AAcm414 compares. I thought I read somewhere kidvybes you'd used the cm414. when i heard the guitar samples earlier comparing the akg c414 i preferred the akg c414. this new variable u87 thingy has me interested again. but, there is always the cm414 which is another of the variable cost effective mics.

I have an invoice for the current Warbler I but decided to wait and pick up the multi pattern when it's ready. I'll keep everyone posted when I hear anything.

I have to say, I'm extremely impressed by this 3U Audio GZ251-FET mic I've been testing...great vintage sounding (almost tube-like) tone, without any harsh or edgy top-end, and plenty of mid-voice mojo...only $599 (including int'l shipping) if purchased direct from the designer (3uaudio@gmail.com)... Loaded with red WIMAs, Dale resistors, a Fairchild FET and an AMI T8 (BV.08) tranny...silver-teflon capsule wiring, and a dual-diaphragm, edge-terminated C12-style capsule with isolated backplates...damned if this mic doesn't look like a GDIY high-quality custom build...and it comes in a very nice custom wood storage box too...these mics continue to surprise!

...just got the word that Guosheng is hoping to be able to offer the multi-pattern Warbler I FET (with angled headbasket) for under $400 (incl. int'l shipping) as an introductory deal, by the end of this month...that would put it at less than half the price of the comparable Mojave MA-301 FET ($899) or the Miktek C7e FET ($899)... ...those may not actually be comparable since the new upgraded Warbler I will also continue to offer the 3 "voice" settings (not available on the Mojave or Miktek) as well as the 3 polar-patterns...

Groovy, looking forward to that, thanks Kid. ...I reached out to Guosheng over the weekend to get an update on the progress of the new multi-pattern Warbler...he told me he has already built all the necessary prototypes (pic below) for proper testing, so the only thing holding him up is the production of the metalwork (modified body and new angular head-basket)...the current supplier is backed up and behind schedule... ...he will be checking on alternate metalwork suppliers to see if a more timely production schedule can be facilitated...so, hopefully early to mid September is looking more realistic for availability...

*** WARBLER MULTI-PATTERN UPDATE*** Guosheng has informed me that the new multi-patterned Warbler (U87) variant, now named "Warbler MKID" is in production...fully-tested units should be available by this friday coming...the introductory price (if ordered direct via email: 3uaudio@gmail.com) will be only $349 shipped! ($385 on eBay)... This is a very unique mic, having both 3 multi-patterns and 3 multi-voicings, as well as the low-cut and pad switching...new angular headbasket too!...here are some preliminary pics he sent me... A multi-pattern U87-inspired FET LDC microphone with proprietary dual-diaphragm 34mm 6-micron K67 capsule, a proper 9.5:1 ratio dual-bobbin transformer, employing the same Fairchild JFET as Neumann for only $349 shipped is quite a feat!...

Oh wow, how do you think he kept the price so low? ...he designed the mics in house...he builds them (including the capsules) in his small factory, where they are produced in small cost-efficient runs...the transformers and metal-work are all proprietary for his needs...when you purchase direct, you are essentially buying "wholesale"...no middle-man, no mark-ups...straight from the factory... ...IMHO, this new Warbler multi-pattern is capable of performing in the same class as the Mojave MA-301 FET ($895) or the MikTek C7e ($899) with the added feature of 3-voicing options...remember, companies like Mojave and MikTek have their mics primarily manufactured overseas, then sell them wholesale (1st markup) to retailers, who then sell them to the public (2nd markup)...two levels of markup before you buy those mics, which you can bypass in the 3U Audio scenario of doing business... ...also, the "3U Audio" line of mics is only a sideline (secondary source of revenue) as the main source of income for this same factory is contract manufacturing for branded products similar to those mentioned...this line is the owner/designer's side project...he's not eating from this line (he's a highly respected design consultant in the field)...
