Its getting even worse wiz is a Queenslander . Sending him that upside down mic would be like sending a cave man an Iphone. Even if he did manage to open the package they won't be getting electricity for at least 10 years. No no no the only viable outcome I am afraid is to send me the mic Go The Blues... formatcyes its worse than that... much much worse.. I am a Victorian who moved to Queensland.. now you can dislike me North and South of your border.... 8) cheers Wiz I will stop hijacking this thread Now. BUT I don't think anyone could dislike you wiz..

I've got a pair of Westinghouse tubes to try as well. I'll report back when I do.

Maybe I'm just too picky? The tubes I rejected were absolutely unusable. Sounded like the ocean going on in the background. I settled for the best of the bunch I had. They are not terrible, but you do notice it on solo acoustic recording, or using it for multiple tracks. The hiss just tends to build up. I like the tone of the RCAs in your comparison. That alone will make the RCAs worth having. Now watch, the ones I get will be the ocean sounding ones. Yeah but you add way to the end and you can sell them for a profit.

I want one of those RCA's in my Oliver Archut/Blackspade U17 Blueline ! If only it would fit.. The tone difference I hear is very close to what I don't love about my mic and with the RCA's, it much more of what I do like to hear. Sinsay, what do you think, can it be done? The UM17 doesn't use a 408a. You'd have to completely modify the circuit

Enjoy your UM17 for a while MJB and when I get some time over the summer we will figure out a way to build you a hybrid MK47 or something. You have a great mic, and what i've heard from you sounds great so it's not holding you back. Black Spade is no slouch, and you should see the new mics they have coming out. Top quality stuff! No more mic angst for a while. We will get you into the 47 club sooner or later, and one way or another.

Thanks so much for thinking of me Cat 5! I'm going to try a couple of new preamps in the next month or two, maybe then I'll have a clearer picture of what my mic can really do. One good thing, I already have the Thiersch M7 Blueline, so I could swap it out and use it elsewhere if I wanted to.
