The STA and may my Eventide 2016 are the two pieces of gear that you'd have to pry from my cold dead hands. Mic sounds nice. Glad that your having fun with it. There is nothing quite like the honeymoon phase of gear. The manner in which it turns the crank so to speak. Enjoy! I feel like I have been backhanded... img.pandawhale.com/post-54734-pew-pew-pew-gif-Imgur-Tumblr-M-k4Nb.gifJohn... Of course not! Heaven's to Murgatroy son... I think that the STA adds so much. It's such a stellar piece of gear, I just can't see how you would let go of one. Strictly and only technically speaking... "Damn son... Look at those knobs!' It's the funnest piece of eye candy. It sounds as good as it looks and then some. It's built like a tank. That piece of gear does so much to get that classic Bing/Frank sound. That really works for me. Either way with either my 47 or 44 the STA does amazing mojo. You know John, it's always hard to judge . Everyone has such a different slant on the same thing. I can recall when you use to have a Peluso, and it sounded exceptional with you. There were a few others following. They all sounded good. Different of course but good. You know what John? I think that I have never heard you go for a 251ish tone. Am I correct? Just imagine the midrange. This mic sounds very good but I hear you with a 251. And... I'd really like to see you try a 251ish. Maybe the Bock. Have you tried the Bock? I have only used his mics a couple of times. The 47 to me was a let down. That 251ish og his though. It works.

I just pulled the trigger on 4 of the RCA 408a tubes. I hope I get ones as quiet as yours John.

DUDE! No problem! I realize my post sounded a little harsh now. Sorry! Anyway - about the 251...I've always thought that was the best sounding mic on my voice! There was a ELA M 251 V AC (Vintage cap and vintage AC701) that I demo'd - $11K 6 years ago - that was just phenomenal. That reedy quality. Anyway, this has been as close as I can remember to it.

Hey sll - I wouldn't say they are quiet - they're definitely noisier than most mics that I've used...but if you didn't notice, then maybe there's no problem with them. Honestly, I may not be versed enough to know, but noisy-ish mics don't seem to bother me that much - unless it's unruly.

Maybe I'm just too picky? The tubes I rejected were absolutely unusable. Sounded like the ocean going on in the background. I settled for the best of the bunch I had. They are not terrible, but you do notice it on solo acoustic recording, or using it for multiple tracks. The hiss just tends to build up. I like the tone of the RCAs in your comparison. That alone will make the RCAs worth having. Now watch, the ones I get will be the ocean sounding ones.

Scott, the RCA's are really quiet, if you listen to the in between voice/guitar on the winecamp shootout to JKMKU47-2, that's the RCA's in JK's mic, it was run through a boulder preamp, they are pretty darn quiet.

I wonder if the tubes are sensitive to something in the design..
My random WE 408s, when amplified through a preamp at singing/talking volume sit around -80ish dB in the room.
I didn't completely follow the mk47 circuit either, with some differences in part values, especially in the power supply. It makes me think these might be sensitive to something for me to get an unmatched pair from a random vendor and not have any issues like you folks are seeing.

The RCA's really made a huge difference in warmth and color. Now we are expecting a record of your own out of you, John!

I'm using the RCA's in mine. Tried the Phillips but went right back to the RCA's. Much nicer I think.

OMG you built it upside down the only way to fix it is to send down to OZ. I am sure it will work fine down here

The matching kinda matters not because their used in parallel, if there was one tube in each of two mics, then it would matter more, not even sure it matters in that case, truly matching mics is a virtually impossible task, I've tried, cat5's tried, Sinsays tried, u get close, but nope! Some mixers would argue a pair of un matched mics in a stereo config sounds more interesting?... So?

Whoa, the difference with the RCA tubes is almost from high end generic to world class. It sounds great John, congrats to both you and Tony. I want one of these, arrgghh...
As for the Sta, double whoa, with the Sta it sounds album ready.
as for the "honeymoon gear phase" outuvphaze mentioned, well, it depends.. if you marry the right woman, the honeymoon never ends ;-)

Its getting even worse wiz is a Queenslander . Sending him that upside down mic would be like sending a cave man an Iphone. Even if he did manage to open the package they won't be getting electricity for at least 10 years. No no no the only viable outcome I am afraid is to send me the mic Go The Blues...

I want one of those RCA's in my Oliver Archut/Blackspade U17 Blueline ! If only it would fit..
The tone difference I hear is very close to what I don't love about my mic and with the RCA's, it much more of what I do like to hear.
Sinsay, what do you think, can it be done?
