I tracked a song using the MOTU 16A
Here is the tracking mix.. just pan and verb.. as tracked.
https%3A//soundcloud.com/user550433336/one-tracking-mix
I then mixed the song, by re_amping though outboard each element of the mix.
Its pretty interesting.
So the final mix has only two reverb plug ins, a delay plug in. No Automation most faders are at unity with a couple at no more than 5dB down... mixed in Logic Pro.
Slate Trigger is on the Snare and Toms.. these are blended though....the mix amount varies but is around 50%.. I really tried hard to get the drums without sample enhancement , but they just didn't come up to spec...
There is no EQ or Dynamics happening ITB.
I tracked it.. I revamped each piece through outboard..and then ran off the mix.. verb, fader adjust (slight) pan .. and delay on one guitar, thats it.
https%3A//soundcloud.com/user550433336/one-outboard
The Capi VP28 is on Snare, Bass, All Guitars. Guitars were mic'd with MD421 . Bass is through a little ampeg cabinet (BA 108) costs as much as a guitar pedal.
The WA Tec was used extensively along with the WA76 (sometimes compressing, sometimes just running through using its transformers) The Drip STAs, The Drip LA2A, The LA500 (JLM onto) and the DIYRE color palette module.. I used only the Blue saturation on a couple of things...
The soundcraft Delta was the path in and out, and its EQ got used here and there too.
It was a lot of fun to mix.. time consuming for sure.... but I got time.
Its interesting.. I did another mix where I put just some plug ins on top of what I had finished.. and it just lost the "Vibe"...
The WA Pultec is great.. note.. it has about 5dB of gain being inserted (i spoke to Bryce, its a function of output impedance) I really watched the gain staging on everything.
The WA76 is very cool.. its great even running things through it set to 20 to 1 (to get the threshold up) and not compressing.
I was nearly going to sell the DIYRE color thing I built.. but after this, it will stay.. sometimes a little made quite a favourable difference.
Its just a blast having everything through the patch bay including the Delta.. I can really quickly try different combinations of things, change the order..
A couple of times during the process I would subsitute plug in versions of the hardware chain I might have running.. e.g. WA TEC WA76 LA2A and the difference was substantial.
(set humour mode on ...) Plug ins seemed to be like reading about an orgasm.. rather than having one... 8) (set humour mode off)
I am happy with the end result.
Its taken me a very long time to accumulate this outboard and its been an investment... but when I listen to this... and look at the gear and touch it, and know I can be independent of software upgrade release issues etc.. and that I can work with the most basic of computer system (CPU and Ram Wise) ...
I am a happy camper...
(for today)
The MOTU 16A has worked flawlessly and sounds great.
cheers
Wiz

Looking forward to listening to this tonight thru monitors. wiz - I'm looking at picking up a JLM LA500 real soon. Do you track thru it? What do you find yourself using it on most of the time? For anyone thinking about JLM gear - it's really inexpensive right now if you're buying from here (U.S.). I guess because the Aussie dollar is low? Great time to grab some of their gear and support Australia's economy. BTW - I totally agree with what you say about the WA76. I'll be picking up a second in a few months.....

That is one seriously complex voice. I would hate to be tasked with having to tune or autotune that vocal. But luckily, it does not need to be.
With regards to the song mix overall, the outboard mix was REAL.

Wiz,
Do you mind me asking how you were using the DIYRE colour module? I find I'm always running through the transformer and about half the time running through the tape emulation....

Hey Bud I have tracked through it.. and I would track through outboard all the time, if I was recording someone else.. it wouldn't worry me one bit. But 99% I am tracking myself.. so Its a lot easier to miss something... This used to be more of an issue until I got the MOTU.. I can't pick one an extra DA AD through this thing... so I am not as concerned. Most of the time, it gets used on elec GTRS. (Remember I have a LA2A and STA's and a 76, so its got some competition). Mine is also one of the first series release, I built it my self..., and doesn't have the ATTACK time mod. Its a very good compressor.. cheers Wiz

Sounds great Wiz, the tune is great too. The only thing my ear wants to hear that it isn't is a snare verb that's decay tailored to the song tempo. But everything sounds really sweet.

With regards to the song mix overall, the outboard mix was REAL. Interesting you bring this up.. because of a discussion here on realgear about pitch correction software, just yesterday I fired up Logic Pro X's Pitch correction, and just hit it to all the performance and 100% correction. You know there was only a couple of parts of the song, that it missed... Now, its not for me.., but I must say, having owned the original Antares, and a couple of iterations of Melodyne (I actually gave my copy of melodyne to a member of this forum) that LOGIC PRO Xs pitch correction is certainly as good as what I have used in the past. The thing that always gives it away to me.. is vowel change and the pitch staying the same... cheers Wiz

Wiz, Do you mind me asking how you were using the DIYRE colour module? I find I'm always running through the transformer and about half the time running through the tape emulation.... Well, actually, I don't use it.. well I haven't used it much at all. I originally bought it, just to get the thing off the ground...I had some cash, and Peterson Goodwyn (DIYRE) was doing a pre order so he could get it up and running. So I supported that. I built it, cause I like building things, tried it, and then put it on the shelf. Also, I didn't have a spare 500 slot. I then sold my 551 EQ and put the Color Module back in the rack. As part of my testing of the new gear, and interface, I have been trying everything, into everything... 8) I just pulled the Color out of the rack right now, to look what module I had liked during this last testing phase... its the JFT Here is the page to the JFT Module JFT MODULE LINK
Here is the page to the Color Module Color Module Link
Just reading about it now, perhaps why I like it, is its meant to due tubey stuff... 8) I might build some more modules and try.. .the other two I have, 15ips and CTX don't spin my wheels, though I will try them all again. I also plan on building some Transformer Boxes.. to run stuff through as well. cheers Wiz

Hi Don thanks for checking it out... I agree totally... I tracked this and arranged it , so I can sort of hear into it.. if this makes any sense.. I wanted some space in the parts I played, so I could hear reverb tails, and hear how everything is affected.... This way I can sort of tell whats working for me and what isn't. At the moment, I think its sounding good.. but not GREAT! I want GREAT! 8) I am still finding the sweet spot in the console. I have changed so much gear in one go.. that its sort of knocked me about a bit... Thats fun though.... The things I am not sure about.. The mix might be a little "thin" for want of a better term. I think I am still heavy handed with the console EQ, I need to "learn to feel" it better... I am really really happy with how well controlled dynamically everything is, when you consider not one dynamic plug in running. Thats very very cool. The work flow is just a blast, and absolute blast...patch patch twist twist. 8) rather than click click click click. 8) cheers Wiz

The thing I forgot to mention.... How Impressed I am with the CAPI VP28. It is seriously good. SERIOUSLY GOOD! It may just be the perfect feature set for a 500 series preamp. It hasn't knocked the 1073 off my voice.. but it beats out everything else I have ever used on just about everything else.. Kudos jsteiger It really is a thing of sonic beauty. At some point I want another and try them as overheads. cheers Wiz

Working with outboard and console is now "RGO-officially" the way to go for you and your music. Obviously. Based on the result. Just sounds like a natural fit, in other words - really good! Man, keep it going. Especially if you have fun with the workflow. If fun meets good results, what could be better?

The outboard opened it up a bit and seems to cut the jagged edges off the puzzle pieces. I know I've said it many times over and, at this point, I'm clearly a wiz stalker but so hard to judge anything you do because I can't take my ears off 1) the incredible vocal and 2) the guitar tones. So consistently good...... Great tune as usual (pretty cool cover)! Now if you'll excuse me I think there's a rabbit boiling over on my stove..............

Really nice Wiz! I like both versions, but the outboard one is stunning so natural (as almost everyone said). Don't know why your drums didn't make it whithout sampling, maybe tunning? Please do tell

First of all I like the song again, well done. Second true every time I arrange I think yeah I can leave it completely ITB but then comes a point where you arrange and you mix and today it was a reverb that just did not cut. So I started to use the desk and the outboard as well HW reverb and it started to have a vibe from scratch.
I mixed for about 30 minutes and I was there. To get near that vibe ITB it took me forever.
My biggest wish would be a console that can do recall with this I could do different songs. Next time I do not start to mix ITB as soon I get the feeling that I start to mix I will use the real gear.
