Hi, Wiz! So much fun listening to your tune and the way it opens up with the analog. It is inspiring because I am going down the same path and hearing your experiment confirms my direction. I will be picking up a Motu 16a and a APB Dynasonics ProRack later this Spring, essentially to get the same workflow you so ably demonstrated the value of with this post. I have a 11 song personal project to finish (ITB w/2-buss analog finishing) before I tear my rig apart to integrate the new pieces, but then it's pull out the soldering iron and get going! Your post has really got me excited about the journey. Thanks Spence

Really nice Wiz! I like both versions, but the outboard one is stunning so natural (as almost everyone said). Don't know why your drums didn't make it whithout sampling, maybe tunning? Please do tell My dog got neutered and has been having a bad time of it.. so I have been baby sitting him round the clock.. He is much improved today... So I aint been about much.. I just wanted to say I hadn't forgotten, or ignored you and I will respond in a couple of days..I see some value here... 8) cheers Wiz Worry not Wiz, Take your time, family comes first. Hope your dog is better now, soon he will be running like crazy again.

I'd be cranky too if my nuts had been clipped. Buy him a new CAPI 526 and he'll be ok...

Wiz, that's a truly soulful voice you've got. I say let it really rip next time. Go watch the movie "The Commitments", soak up some inspiration, then let er rip. I really enjoyed it.

Yup, pretty much said it all. The outboard opened it up a bit and seems to cut the jagged edges off the puzzle pieces. I know I've said it many times over and, at this point, I'm clearly a wiz stalker but so hard to judge anything you do because I can't take my ears off 1) the incredible vocal and 2) the guitar tones. So consistently good...... Great tune as usual (pretty cool cover)! Now if you'll excuse me I think there's a rabbit boiling over on my stove.............. message for henge and wiz , Justin and myself will NOT be ignored As usual wiz...stellar!! tonycamphd, I'm not getting what you and Justin are on about!lol Please explain...

Hey Martin thanks for checking it out... Commitments... 8) was only talking about that movie at Saturday Nights gig.. we had played "Midnight Hour" after not having played it since the mid 90s when that movie came out.. and they (the punters) came running for it.... maybe Soul might be making a comeback? 8) Also, that guy, Andrew Strong is playing round here later this month... big voice. He did a great version of "Hard To Handle". cheers Wiz

Please do tell If I have missed personally thanking anyone who made a comment I apologise.... I have been through the thread a couple of times checking.. and think I got everyone... if not.. THANKS 8) Remember the song was an experiment. When I was processing the drums with the outboard, I went a little too far doing the 1176 "snare trick" and didn't like the way it sat on its own. It dragged the song down sonically... but blending it with a sample got it back. Toms, just didn't have the appropriate amount of "life" Mostly its me, I am a crap drummer... a good player would have made it different. cheers Wiz PS Bowie (my dog) is doing great.. he has recovered beautifully... and I am so relieved.. I love that little sucker....

I personally cant stand samples/replacements for a number of different reasons..rational and not 8) But normally when i track something for someone i always knock out single hits on every drum and cymbal to give whoever some sampling sounds of the kit itself. Is this the kind of sampling you're doing? or are you replacing or paralleling from another library?

I have done, and do exactly what you mention, regards using single hits of the drums when tracking. In this case though, it was from Slate's library... cheers Wiz

I love that little sucker.... Ohh I understand. Definetly can't comment using comp on tracking duties, haven't done it. Sometimes I get anxious on over doing a snare with compression while mixing (go figure). Forgive me if I'm telling you something you already know. Most of the times I use parallel compression on snare and everything gets back to normal. Maybe it's possible to use parallel compression while tracking, it could be easier to keep the vibe going (don't know if that may cause some latency). You have a console, it could be a piece of cake, though. Toms are a puzzle most of the times. Setting aside that drumming is not your forte. Maybe a different drumhead might help you. A 2 ply drumhead almost always do the trick, and for the bottom single or with a reinforcement dot in the center. Tunning toms is a hit or miss, there are a lot of things to be considered. A good starting point is tunning the bottom head tight and the top head medium tight. Sometimes floor toms like the top tighter than the bottom but it's not a rule of thumb. If you are interested in some intense tunning reading this will do www.tune-bot.com/tunebottuningguide.pdf Well, I hope that could have been of help for your next experiment. PS I'm glad Bowie is fine, sure thing, dogs are pure love

Hey Baquin
I'm not compressing on tracking... but I am during mixing.. but I am committing to that, because I am re-amping, if that makes sense.
Parallel Compression, not something I have done much of...I really should give it a try, thanks for the tip.
Thanks for all the tips 8)
cheers
