Well, its the CV-4, MK-47 and then the CV-4 for my taste. The CV-4 is smoother throughout the entire frequency spectrum and sounds like it would take eq the best of the 3. That MK-47 is nothing to sneeze into though. Cowboy, Lefty AND Bradley Walker would be proud!

Lefty AND Bradley Walker would be proud! R It'd be a toss up as to which one of those two is the better sanger. Hate to say it but I believe my money is on Bradley. Born to sing he is.

Is this the Elam 251, cv4 mod? To be honest, I'm not sure. Better ask Shannon I just told him to make it sound good. He did.

Is this the Elam 251, cv4 mod? cowboys is the capsule that came with it but a different mod than john kenns. Cowboys was the first one of that kind. It was more leaning towards a U67, not even knowing or cloning, just kinda went for a good tones. They all sound good Cowboycoalminer TWANG is da bomb.

They all sound great. It would all depend on where you want his voice to fall in the sound spectrum based on the other instrumentation.

Its a great service to get your mike tweaked by the cap builder, if you are thinking about sending it overseas, given the cost of the mike ,I woudld recommend just paying for a premium shipper with insurance.
I sent my Thiersch back to be fixed ( after I damaged it) and between the three postal system ( Cdn, german and us) and German customs holding back the package of a returned german manufactured product, it wasted about 6 weeks, no apologies, silly !

I think Tim's capsules will always sound superb in the C12 configuration as long as all things are in order. It excels in maintaining a silky hf lift without sounding hyped or harsh. In that respect I think it is the king.
In the C12 plate follower circuit I have found tubes to make a dramatic difference as well. Even if you send your mic to Tim to have the capsule custom tuned, changing the tube may make the benefits less apparent.
That said, in my experience the 1950s GE 6072 tubes have outperformed anything else, including the later year GE tubes (60s, 70s). I don't know what they were putting in those things but it's worth the premium you pay for the older ones.
All three mics sound good in this experiment. Of course, I think cowboy could sing into a bean can and sound good. You can really see how the 47 and 12 complement each other. Side by side the differences become glaring. I've been many times amazed by that very CV4 too. I've never heard it sound bad and it especially shines on cowboy's daughter's voice.

Thanks for the kind words monkeyxx. I try my best. As a capsule manufacturer, getting to work directly on a capsule in the mic it is going to be used in always results in getting the most out of a mic. Most manufacturers, like myself, offer these kinds of services. The initial cost for tweaking a capsule is low (about 50 or 60 dollars). For me being in europe, or others around the globe however can be problematic from a customer's standpoint to be sending their mic so far away and dealing with customs, etc. Usually this results never knowing how your capsule will be perceived or compared because you get so little direct influence on the final result. In this instance I'm glad my capsule gets showcased in Cat5's wonderful build. timcampbell I got to say this C 12 is absolutely stunning. I'd heard a sample that Shane ( category5) had put up several months ago with it and I remember commenting then that it might be the best sounding mic on the planet. Well now after using it, I'm completely sold. You do excellent work and so does he. I tracked all the vocals on this cover tune using the C 12 with very minimal processing (basically set the top and bottom filter) and I just love the result. Used it on buried acoustic too and it sounds great. Perfect for wolfey sources. BTW guys, I promise I only do these modern pop country covers to generate traffic to my SC page. Even then only if the song isn't a complete turd. This one here is one of the less stinkier ones I've heard in awhile. Almost no mention of alcohol in it, almost.. Great work Shane and Tim!! https%3A//soundcloud.com/herb-music/roller-coaster

I think getting on Tim's wait list for a proper capsule should be my first step, and maybe tweaking from there as necessary. My mics are almost a 1:1 C12 copy so I think it's a good potential match up based on what I'm hearing in these C12 projects.
Sadly, the default Chinese capsule that came in the Apex sounds better than the Peluso CEK-12. That Peluso has just got this nasty, nasty sibilant presence peak that I was never able to dial out in the amplifier. I think that capsule does need to be modified. Now the mic with the Chinese cap is sounding more like a Mojave or something. It's not bad but I'm aiming for spectacular.
I've got a later GE tube and it does sound a lot better than the Electro-Harmonix tube in the second mic.
Thanks for all the advice. I feel like it's time for me to really step up my mic game to the top, after being involved with recording for over 10 years now.
CowboyCoalMiner, you're a great example of what I'm aiming for, just a commitment to the highest possible fidelity as a default. So hopefully when the songs start happening, when the magic happens, you might be sitting with something that will stand the 'test of time.' A recording with no excuses.
I don't see a lot of people doing ELAM 251 builds... I think that would be my next project after these two are finished. The APEX 460 is not quite the right dimension in the headbasket, but, the 251 circuit could easily be adapted to the existing circuit, which is not too far off from it. The newer Apex 460A (notice the "A") looks like a very attractive package for this next one, since it comes with all the right accessories, and a better finish.
Sorry I hope this is not too far off topic. Cowboy's mics are an example of excellence without excuses.
