Did anyone else notice the soon-to-be-released D864 vari-mu comp posted on the Dizengoff FB page? Based on an old Federal design. Matt commented that pricing may be around the same as the D4!!!

I've been following. $6/650 for that is BOSS. The Schmidlin Fed+ that I had goes for like $1500. This looks like a great deal.

I've never heard of these guys. How's their build/sound reputation?
Does anyone have any Dizengoff gear? Curious because I'd love a Vari Mu comp especially at that price. It also says limited edition. Any idea how many they're going to make?

New company from the founder (?) of Black Lion Audio. The only product released so far was a limited edition D4 (Redd47 style) preamp. dizengoff, care to chime in?

I'm not on Facebook could you post a link to the comp. so I can see without joining.
I've got 2 of the D4 (Redd47 style) preamps. Have yet to try them out. I need to setup a few more things in the studio and test them out.

I preordered one of the D4 (Redd47 style) preamps and should receive it next week per Matt. Interested in the D864 vary mu compressor as well. I went to their site and it is showing the expected price to be $649 plus shipping. dizengoffaudio.com/?page_id=177Scott

The forum's default conehead-baby avatar pic is...creepy. Any way you can change it to default to something else? Like maybe the RGO logo?

No make-up gain control? That will make the input and threshold management very tedious.

Well, girls, You're all pretty... now can we discuss this: Please? I'd like to hear thoughts on this as well. Never used a comp without a makeup gain control. Run into a line level amp for boost/cut? Pretty big feature to not have.........

Doesn't having both an input and threshold control kind of eliminate the need for make up gain? If you need more output, just pull up the input and threshold a little and you're there right? Not perfect, but not the end of the world.

Anything beyond that is a bonus in my eyes.

No, just a PITA to be without a standard feature. I don't know. The compressor that this thing is modeled after had 1 knob. That's it. Anything beyond that is a bonus in my eyes. That's fine... but let's face it, most of us (with or without a console) are trying to get the cleanest path into our DAWs. That means microphone - preamp - (maybe EQ) - compression - Converter. So, we have the microphone placement done, preamp gain for unity gain to the input of the converter (-18DBfs as nominal 0) and then into compressor. Once you adjust the input to hit the right sweet spot, you adjust the threshold to start giving you the optimal compression you are looking for. Then you have "the sound". Now, do you wish to mess with that all over again just to adjust the OUTPUT? No, you want an output control to get it to the first yellow in the DAW's input. Why the first yellow? Because anything above that and your plugins overload. Fine if that's what you need but then an output control will help with that also, if you need it. If they've gone through this much trouble to include an input knob, attack and release as well as threshold, why not include an output control? One could convincingly argue that the input knob is unnecessary and instead have an output control. Clearly opinions vary. This is just mine based on a long history of working with outboard comps. My favorites and most-used tools have this feature. Even the simple LA2a, LA3a designs had two knobs: Compression and output gain. That's a no-brainer to me.
