I have one. Love mine its a steel for $399. Very clean low noise you cannot bypass the pres which is a bummer but I am going to pair it with svart s convertor. I cannot fault the DA. My feeling is with svart's converter I won't need to worry about my AD/DA for a very long time...

I don't know about this one, but every single tascam device I've owned has given me grief. I vow to never buy a tascam or TEAC product ever again.

The uh-7000 is quite heavy with an all metal case the pots and switches feel expensive. Guess time will tell but i realy like mine.

I am on a mac PT11. I just monitor thru the Low latency monitor in the uh-7000's DSP mixer. Have not noticed any latency doing it this way. Did not even know there was a concern.

Looks like a nice box, Burrbrown conversion for low cost. Analog stuff is not mentioned, probably 5532 opamps. I saw it along with other interfaces at NAMM visiting with former tech dept. head Jim Finch.
I ended up buying a DR-70D from B+H for $299. It's a four channel interface designed for SLR digital cameras like my Cannon. It has 5532 opamps and Cirrus Logic/Crystal converters. Seems to be the answer for quality HD audio recording, I like nature stuff. I plan to use my AKG 460 mics with it.
I will probably swap the 5532 opamps with LME's to lower noise and smooth out the mids. They show the pcb innards and it looks pretty easy to do. Tascam is developing nice tools these days, a good effort considering how the old model of studio gear has vacated the building.

If all goes as planned I'll be ordering one on Friday, and hopefully be able to give some feedback next week.
Contrary to Svart's experience, I have had lots of pleasure using Tascam products.
This thing looks like just the ticket for a hi fi mobile rig... or 2 extra channels i/o on my Apollo. I will be very curious to see how it stacks up.

The DR-70D got tested a bit today and got the LME49720 opamps put in, it helped quite a bit. The stock parts are JRC4580 aka NEC upc4570 aka National LM833 aka Motorola MC33078. It's butter smooth at 24 bit 96k with external mics, very quiet as well. The 48 phantom will run 4 high draw Schoeps style condenser mics. For a battery powered recorder, it's quite a marvel.
I used a small battery powered stereo mic preamp in a box into a Strasser model AIWA DAT recorder to do live stuff 20 years ago.

Well I did order one from B&H, it will be here Monday with UPS.
I will be able to give some feedback and maybe even some recording examples...pretty excited about this.
Jim Williams that portable DR-70D looks really good, nice find. I've always wanted to try something like that.

I have K702, they are my go-to. But the ATH-M50 are great for closed back general duties, there are a lot of those around here, my family loves them also for casual listening, they get used every day. People I record always love them, too. I still prefer a nice open back phone like the K702 for my own personal use. Between these two, I'm not really wanting for anything more, although I'd love to try some higher-end Sennheisers or the newer AKG K712. I also use Sennheiser HD-280, they are hooked up to the electronic drums right now, cheap and cheerful.

Way off topic now, but I have a pair of Q701's (similar to the k701/k702, but with different colors). I've had a pair of the k712's here for the past week. The 712's are another up top. The 701's seem to get a touch harsh on top with overly bright mixes. I think the 712's mask that, which is good for listening, not so much for mixing. The bottom of the 712's also seems fatter, but a little looser. I decided to stick with the q701's and not upgrade to the k712's, at least for my purposes. The HD650's though. The would pair great with the AKG's. Not as wide, but really nice realism.

It's amazing with 4 AKG 460's running into it. It uses an Analog Devices Blackfin DSP processor like in my Bricasti M7 reverb. I'm going to have a lot of fun finding uses for it, nature, clubs, whatever, there are a pair of omni mics built in as well.

On the Tascam for a moment, it's supposed to be a poor mans Lynx Hilo. On paper it specs out better too, problem for me is lack of S/Pdif (for Kemper) and the RTT latency.

Can you use the Kemper via AES? What is RTT? I read a bunch about latency concerns, but the post above mentions no latency issues. If I get something sold soon, I might grab one to test. The specs are killer, but it seems like it's the chip specs, not measured in the device. Either way, the price is right to give it a go.

Well it's fine if you're using hardware boxes like the Kemper, but still a problem if you're using VI's which you can't mute in your DAW. RTT means round trip time.. Ohhhhh well I'll be a son of a fruity nut: tascam.com/content/downloads/products/823/e_uh-7000_om_va.pdfIt does support S/pdif over the AES / EBU connections.. This is starting to get very tempting, must admit. The specs are A-weighted with S/N 117dB (so that's around what you'll get) and a low THD+N... So it must of at least been tested to conform to those standards. We all know how much specs mean though .. One other thing that's missing is the Hi-Z, so if you use instruments like electric bass / guitar you'll need a pre-amp or DI box.. Have to admit, I'm very tempted.

Yeah have a suite of Daking and API, the Daking Pre ones have Hi-Z (Instrument) inputs in them.. So I'm covered, more of a general warning to people looking. I sold my Apogee Symphony a fair while ago as I didn't need it, looking for a cheaper if possible replacement.. Was going to pull the trigger on both the Symphony 2X6 I/O and an Apollo Twin, then my UAD satellite sprung back to life and I started re-thinking the whole process again ..

I've always been leery about conversion, but am hoping to compare this to my Midas board and cheap Focusrite box.

Well it'd be hard not to hear a difference between a Focusrite box and an Apogee Symphony, but once you're getting into Hilo and Symphony territory then I think it's a matter of taste really. The Tascam specs out well, heard mixed things about support. Drivers are still ASIO at the moment it seems, that would explain the crap RTT.

On the Tascam for a moment, it's supposed to be a poor mans Lynx Hilo. On paper it specs out better too, problem for me is lack of S/Pdif (for Kemper) and the RTT latency. I picked up a Hilo a week ago, unfortunately I haven't been able to play with it much because my wife and I are both suffering with bad colds or a flu. I'm probably replacing my RME UFX with the Hilo, since I don't need more than 4 channels of input simultaneously, so the Hilo with the Burl B2 should be all I need. One of many things I really like about the Hilo is the sample rate conversion. The Kemper runs at 44.1k, so if I want to go into the UFX digitally, I'm limited to recording at 44.1k. With the Hilo, I can record at 96k and the Kemper digital connection is automatically converted to 96k. I'd still like to compare this to just going Kemper analog into the Burl, but I can't imagine that the extra DA-AD conversion will be anything but detrimental. I'm curious if the Kemper digititis that some complain about might be because of the Kemper DA convertor, so I'm bypassing it, although I'm introducing potential problems with the Hilo SRC. I just have more confidence in Lynx's SRC than I do in the DA included in an $1800 guitar processor. I can't find info about whether the UH-7000 also offers the SRC, if it does it might be an awesome inexpensive interface for Kemper users to consider.

I'll be able to say more later, I'm in a session with it right now, but so far the DAC on the UH-7000 is really impressing me. Depending on how much I like the preamps and ADC I am considering buying a second unit for a 4x4 hi fi mobile recording setup. I'm just amazed at what it does compared to what I paid for it.
It's not a very good monitor controller, you would probably want something with a big volume knob, mute, etc, to go with it. As an AD/DA, preamp, and interface though it's very elegant. I do wish it had a pad and a rumble filter. All you get is a gain knob and phantom power on/off for the preamps.

The DR-70 4 channel is probably better suited for portable uses. Besides running on 4 AA cells, it will run on USB. The mic preamps have 3 gain ranges, low medium and high with adjustable pots. 24 or 48 volt phantom is selectable. It has a full set of high pass filter selections beginning at 40 hz. The limiter is selectable, mono or stereo locked.
I took it out to BLM to try it out Sunday with my cannon DSLR. I shot AR-15's 10 feet away and the limiter works great. Yes, it takes gunshots very well. Rock acts ought to be easy.
