Thanks guys. I moved to my laz La3a 500 build. I hopefully will get a chance to test them on an album I am finishing up. Client wants some changes to the mixes. Said one track got a little too aggressive, going to try these out instead of the vp28's or in conjunction with.

And me and my friend finally seem to have found a good date (3/11) for our shootout on drums (kick, snare and OHs). AMS/Neve 10 series reissues, NV73s, Heiders, VP28s and my friend's vintage Trident 70 console. We've talked about recording each pre with 3-4 different gain settings to be able to compare how they behave when pushed. If we get the time we'll do acoustic too. I'll post files via my Dropbox!

Knob solution for the Elma's that jsteiger sells at CAPI. They just fit this way, set screw grabs the very end of the shaft for the output pot.

Used one this week on a session. Tracked vox, elec bass DI, upright bass, and kick. I was very pleased at how the NV73 performed. I did not have time to do a side by side with the GAP, but I perceived it to be smoother, less grainy, and just better. Not sure what is contributing to this smoothness, caps maybe.
One of them does not pass audio and just starts feeding back/ LF oscillation. Built both at the same time so not sure what's up...
( It helps to remember to tighten the input transformer screw terminals before trying to pass audio through it! So now it works I just have to gain it up 25db more then the fully functional unit)

I'm very happy with it too, so they keep hatching here. Re the faulty one, David has been brilliant helping with troubleshooting, so just shoot him an email.

What did you use for the insert?

No insert needed with the parts spec'ed. The retaining nut keeps the output pot from seating all the way down. I used the small gray knob for the dual pots.

Haven't gone to them much honestly, i need to play more, but i'm kinda totally in love with my VP28's, they are just magic to me, everything seems to just fit so perfect with them, i just can't not reach for them... i might just need an intervention? 8)

Just did the high pass mod to one of my NV73s. Works great. What cap values/HPF frequency did you choose? To my ears the .22µF/70Hz HPF I went for (and that I posted in my NV73 HPF diary at GDIY) seems to cut a bit above 70Hz, and a bit too much I believe. Not sure. I just felt it cut a bit of the warmth around 100-200Hz on male vocals. I'd prefer a steeper filter working below approx 70-80Hz. Any impressions yet on that detail?

I never use my console for recording, because it's configured with no pres (it's a Series 12 which is kind of modular, not a 32 series). Also, because of the conole's crazy pwr consumtion I only power it up when mixing. Sure, I could use a separate eq/filter to do the job but for those occasions you need it when recording it's just so much more convenient having it built in. So I plan to have four with the HPF and seven without.

Not yet. I'll let you know if I do Meanwhile, if you get the chance testing the HPF on male voc and/or acoustic, please let me know what you think!

Finally some time (and funding) to finalize my four units that have been laying here waiting for Carnhill xformers since the end of March. I also took the other four for replacement of the output pots and knobs. The 1/4" shaft pot that is delivered with the NV73 kit nowadays has a much firmer and nicer feel. Also the knob from the other Don Audio (how strange is that!?!) is highly recommended: www.don-audio.com/Classic-Vintage-small-Trim-Output-Knob-grey-NV-DA84-Neve-StyleI also ordered all stuff for yet an NV73, this time with the eq add on. Look forward to check that out. Attachments:

I finished 2 of them and they are fantastic. Plus you get a wonderful sounding "hidden" 10k position on the Mids knob, look at the pic, the left one looks, as if it's one tic too far, the right one is on 7.2. Pretty easy build soldering wise. Attachments:

kosi Those look great! As mentioned I have the EQ add on version on the bench right now. Really curious about testing the eq, I was eager to complete the preamp part first, my ninth(!), this time the 16V VPR version, to test/calibrate. It worked fine and I started stuffing the EQ boards and noticed I missed one value of resistors, then another and yet another.. Turned out I had ordered the 250EQ Mouser cart instead! So, in addition to ordering the proper NV73 EQ add on components, I decided to go for a pair of the 250 EQ!

Got this pic from my friend who is renting my two preamp 500 racks for an orchestral recording this week, so I just threw in all 500 pres I have. He was very happy with the sound of the NV73s. So not only for rocknroll I'll have to keep hatching them!.. Attachments:
