Ok, after some time of collecting all these parts, i'm finally going to jump in on this bad boy, my first impression of the kit is... it feels like a tank! very cool indeed. JK went top of the line with everything going into the mic, he picked up the PSU case from Dan at Collective Cases, and the psu pcb from Tony Zayance of GDIY, a Thiersch blueline M7, silver hookup wire, gotham GAC7 mic cable, binder connectors all the way around. We're going to try the phillips 408a's for the break in and see how the noise is? i have 6 pairs of western electric 408a's here to try if the kit tubes don't sound good, so here goes nothing 8)

and take it from me laying down the cap to check something out s not a good idea ! Want an international shipping laugh ? After german customs held my cap back for 2-3 weeks and after Thiersch re-skinned it and sent it on its way in 2 days ,then it disappeared for another 3-4 weeks between the german postal system and usps ? punchline, the afternoon it showed up at cat5's , ( wait for it),, was the day he and his family headed off to MASS at 6 a.m. for xmas !!! ha ha i laughed, if I don't get the Mike before I die can I leave it to one of you guys in my will ?

i'm definitely going to put up audio samples, here's a trick i do on heat creating parts to get them up and off the pcb, it keeps it looking clean and consistent, and allows air to move freely around the part and carry the heat away from the pcb, and all for 20 cents 8)

Make sure you get a wide selection of tubes. I got a pair of those RCA from Shane and they are a lot quieter than the Western Electric but they are slightly sibilant in comparison which might show up on your tenor-twang JK. I will try and post a quick comparison.
I think the Western Electrics just saturate a hair more than the RCAs. The RCAs feel a little harder which can be useful in certain situations.

yotonic thanx for putting those up! and holy moly, those westerns are WAAAAAYYYYY noisier than the RCA's, wow! The westerns in my MK are definitely not that noisy.

They are unusually noisy tonight! They aren't normally that bad. I just flipped on the mic to post a quickie comparison. But sometimes they can be on for an hour and then get noisy like this. But there is something about the Western Electric that I like. I have tried the RCA, Sylvania Golds, and Westerns.

About this mic...I bought it "ears un-heard", so I have no idea what it's going to sound like or whether it will - most importantly - fit my voice. Honestly, I guess I record other people as much of the time, but what fun is owning a mic in a 2-mic locker with one you don't use? Anyway, we can see it's being built well and the parts are all great. So, if it doesn't work out for me, it will probably go up for sale.

I took my Western Electric tubes out and gave them a good cleaning, now they sound fine. Here's another take with them relatively noise free. Attachment Deleted

Lookin' good TC. You're going to have a hard time giving that mic up when it's done. FWIW, I put a set of WE tubes in my standard MK47 and didn't have the noise issues they usually give me. Sorry about your cap Kcat. At least it's within reach for when I get back next week.

JK mike's are personal but we are in the same boat but I am planning on living with the mike for awhile to get to know it and to let the cap break in.
Martin noticed a pronounced burn in period .
How do you clean tubes ?
No probs Shane, enjoy your holidays, they keep it for 15 days. I think that works: right ?
