Just got un-lazy enough to open up the files...and damn...I guess a million dollar mic locker DOES make a difference. Or maybe it was the engineer...Anyway, they're the best drum tracks I've ever gotten anywhere. You guys interested in me uploading a snippet of a song's drum tracks? If so, how would you want it? All tracks separately so you can download and hear? Or just a board mix without any processing? If anyone is interested, I could link a zip file with all the files and you could load it in and hear for yourself. Also, maybe just a board mix of the drums by themselves...Lemme know. EDIT - Here are the files... Link to all separate files (bounced OH & Rooms into stereo files) - app.box.com/s/0kvlpw4z20x8qpl5xk05Here is just a raw wav sample without processing: https%3A//soundcloud.com/johnandkris/rawdrumbusdrumbusHere is with some processing and parallel compression on the Drum Bus: (not claiming to know what I'm doing ) https%3A//soundcloud.com/johnandkris/compresseddrumbus

Raw separate tracks and a quick board mix. ...it's probably the room more than anything.

Think it was an AEA R88 about 5 feet in front of the mic...not sure what was on overheads.

Any reason they set the drums up there against the glass or in the corner like that? Did it have good bottom and brightness for example ?

maybe the engineer didnt have to run long chords across the room and could see the drummer the best there LOL

Any reason they set the drums up there against the glass or in the corner like that? Did it have good bottom and brightness for example ? Can't answer this exactly but I will say this.....I hung with a few buddies at a fairly well built out and treated home studio in Nashville a while back. The drums were set up in the most visually appealing "central" spot in the drum room. It "looked" just right. My friend Dave Cobb was with and kept quiet until he had a few beers. He then opened up and said polity, "I don't mean to be a dick but...the drums are in the wrong spot of that room and totally suck". He convinced my other buddy to try moving them around and sure enough, Cobb quickly found the spot where the kick and snare just exploded. They were completely dead, lifeless and not moving air in the original spot. This said, I'm sure the cats at BB know by now exactly where the sweet spot is in those rooms!

this ^ is dead on, i walk a room with a snare at waist height while striking it to find the spot where it pops! Then i'll check the kick in the same way, you're very lucky if the same spot pops both, i pick the best compromise, or according to where kick/snare is more important to the song at hand.

Here's a mistake I made (glad I'm not mixing this stuff)... Was listening back to the two wavs and wondering why I was hearing more prominent ghost notes with the raw track...and then I realized I had used a gate to take out some of the cymbal and hihat in the top snare on the compressed track. First time I tried that...and now I know why I won't do it again. Probably just mix in a replacement snare to be able to get rid of some of the hat bleed. I normally do that to kick and snare, but not sure I would do it here. Think it's over compressed too - this is a pretty dry, Bill Withers type song...so, maybe I should rely on the room mics and not compression for any room and sustain. But, alas, I'm not mixing, so who cares?

Is that different toms ringing with each kick and snare hit?

The toms rang like crap with each kick and snare. Almost to the point where the sounded like hits. I ended up cutting the toms, but with the parallel compression, we might be hearing the ringing in the overheads and other room mics. Weird issue I've never really dealt with. Although, like I said, i did that quick and probably pulled the effected drums up too high. I rarely use parallel comp - no idea why I decided to do it here lol. Oh well.

Just sharing a little trick that was given to me by Eddie Bayers. He really liked how I had my house kit set up and just added this when we tracked a while back. He is a lefty, so we moved the ride cymbal for him and he played his ass off. He is such a great studio drummer and I always learn something from him every time that I am around him. www.youtube.com/edit?o=U&video_id=AF8QEtGJbBYR
