I used the original, in fact, I had two original U47FET's, loaned to me by a friend. They wren't better than my Blackspade/Tab-Funkenwerk UM17 Blueline, ( with the Thiersch capsule). My wife tried it, and said. "give me my mic".
For kick drum, possibly other instruments, it's probably great, but for vocals, I found they were missing something. I'd take a U87 over it any day. Just my opinion, based on one experience.

Has anyone used the new U47fet on voice? Who's making the new U47fet? The original is supercardoid, for me it's not what i would reach for first.. Maybe if you have a lot of bleed...

I'm more interested in a comparison between a prime example of an Original and the new re-issue. There have been some rave reviews and every indication is that Neumann-Sennheiser are making it precisely like the original series.
Comparisons?

Has anyone used the new U47fet on voice? I can finally say I have!! I bought two of the new ones and have worked with original issues before. These are exactly the same danged microphones. Every component and they sound IDENTICAL. Now, I'm going on memory as I don't have an older one at the moment to do a side-by-side, but brother, this is one helluva microphone! As for voice? Yep. They have that U47FET sound all right. Amazing on spoken word. Nice and gritty for singing which makes them perfect for metal/hard rock stuff if a U87 doesn't quite do it for you. Highly recommended. Neumann have hit it out of the park with this one! They are NOT cheap though. $4000 plus shipping and tax. So a pair of them set me back, but this is a long term investment, not one of those 'buy it, try it, love it, meh, fall out of love with it, sell it' type of transactions. See attached. Will catch up with the links later, gotta run today, but for those who can't afford the U47 FET, I highly suggest the Lauten Audio Atlantis, it's really in the same ballpark.

Unless you're specifically wanting the FET, I would say get the MK-U47 for the same price and be extremely happy.

I could have bought an original a few years ago for $2k, but I thought that was way too much for one. Go figure. I should have done it and then offed it in 2014 before the reissues came out. LOL Front of kick and tuba is about all I'd use one for, and I've got other mics that cover those tasks just as well. Of course keep in mind that I don't like some classics, and love other seemingly misfit mics. YMMV..... But yeah...a MK-47 at half the price? No brainer IMO.

Trust me, if you like a U47 FET, the Luauten Atlantis will get you there and then some, and it's a lot less expensive. Still, if you gotta have it, at least the new Neumann seems to be up to the standard they set years back. Now... uhh.. why can't they do this with a U47? No desire? Not enough profit? Hell, people would pay 6 G's if it really sounded just like a new original U47 did.

Is the Neumann fet47 $4,000? A MKU47 is not a hyper cardoid pattern mic, which is what makes the fet great for kick drum, it rules for rejecting bleed. If you don't need a hyper pattern, the MKU is an amazing deal, whats better yet is if you really want a 47fet for that specific sound, you can build the D47fet from poctop, costs about $50 for the PCB and electronics, then you can buy a replica U47body from 939 for $230, a thiersch M7 for about $350, and neumann badge for $60, ami t49 tranny, then you chop the tube to length and have a virtually identical looking/sounding fet 47 for about $790, it's an identical circuit.

Damn. Are the fets that much? Jeesh. Read the whole thread. I laid that out, bro. $3999 is basically 4000. And that's what I paid. EACH. $9037 in total, taxes and shipping included. I used one tonight on a metal singer. The sound is complete and finished. Ran it in the usual signal chain, 1073, LA2a and 1176 buestripe repro. The sound was SPECTACULAR. Finished. I shot it out against 8 other vocal mics. U87, U87ai, CU29 (copperhead), C414EB, U89, C414uls, M930, Neummann Gefell UM57 I used serial #52. And it was delishous.

I was underwhelmed too. My friend loaned me two vintage U47FET's. I checked them out on vocals and acoustic guitar, they sounded blah, is all I can say, like an upgraded RE-20, just blah.
That's why I pointed at the Lauten Atlantis. It's in the style of the Neumann, but has some balls, and many more uses than a kick drum. Want to sound like a Bryan Ferry or Chris Isaak vocal, the Atlantis will get you there, and that's not too shabby.
I bet there's a $450 mic somewhere thats as good as the Neumann for kick, but it hasn't been written about. If it's only for kicks, for goodness sake, buy the closest U47clone and save some dough. Only the elite can afford that kind of luxury.
