Anyone know of a diy 500 series vca compressor?

Wish I did... only thing that comes to mind is the (non 500 series) SCA dbx 160 kit. It's dirt cheap, but I could never talk myself into buying it since it has no metering at all. I found this on DIYREC, but I don't think it's available anymore (could be wrong): www.diyrecordingequipment.com/projects/mixbuzz/

Yes I believe you're correct and that comp project is no longer available.... I guess I'm perplexed cuz it seems like it would be a no brainer of a project....not too complex or pricey.... Wish I had the skills to make one

peter purpose had an api vca 500 diy going for a bit(525 i think?), but i think thats it, the rest of the diy vca rigs are 19" as far as i've been able to find, the sb4000 from serpent, and i believe this www.collectivecases.com/dbx.html is a cool rig. works well.... If anyone finds a good vca diy 500, i'm interested as well 8)

Every time I've visited AC sound's website their kits have been out of stock.... In the meantime I'm looking at sknote's pulse width modulation compressor to build....price is right and the feature set is top notch....hope it sounds good

Just received the pcbs and case last week...I have 4 more 2520s to build and then it'll all come together...
Looks like I'll try wiring the DB25 snakes as well, otherwise that'll cost me an arm and a leg...

Would you mind perhaps starting another thread so we can follow your progress with the summing amp?

The 525 is not a VCA comp. It uses a FET in the feedback loop of a 2520 for GR. I have not seen the inside or schemo of the Melcor CL20 but have been told the 525 uses the same principal method for GR, only with more controls.

Yeah and the 225. Those were Paul's babies. The 525 was long before him.

Define fast? Will 20 microseconds be fast enough?

Yes sir! Is there a cat about to be let out of a bag?

Yes sir! Is there a cat about to be let out of a bag? that cat would be sick in a channel strip... Vp28 pre, Lc53a/553f eq, ? compressor. I would need one more 51x box/PSU and a sidecar for the ultimate 3x11 channel tracking rig! If this comes to pass, i would have to put both PSU's in a 19" racked box underneath the 3 51x boxes, i'd also relocate the internal fuses to the front panel of the box for easy swapping if i blow a fuse, i've done that 2wice, it's a pita to open the ps box for replacing.

A couple hours ago I was putting my 2 yr old down for a nap... And as usual I fell asleep as well. And I had a dream (or should I say 'vision'?) about the CAPI comp... Or 'Compi' as it was known.

hey Jeff, if this was to happen, how long would it be before you hypothetically announced that it maybe was going to happen? 8)
I want to be #1 on the list for a pair of these mystery machines!(so spooky, and on halloween even 8)

IF it were going to happen, I would not announce it until I had something solid working and had something finished looking to show. That is hypothetically a ways off. If shit goes well and I don't self destruct, I MIGHT have something to talk about mid December. Boo!!

But that is all a big IF. As my dad use to say "if my aunt had balls, she would have been my uncle".
