Hey All,
I have a hardware API 2500, a pair of Tonelux TX5C compressors, and just set up the demo of the Waves API 2500 so I can do a little shootout. I'll run the Waves version through my console so that it gets the same trip through the DA/AD and console circuitry as the hardware. Does anyone have any tracks that they'd like to have included? Any tips or advice on how to run the shootout?
Fire away!

Who knows, maybe the Waves will be as good as my hardware and I can pocket $3000...
...and put it towards something without a (Pro Tools 11 compatible) software equivalent...
....Sta Level anyone? Haha.

What's the Tonelux TX5C? Is it a 2500 clone or something?

Similar features to the 2500 and they're both designed by Paul Wolff.

24/96 min wave files would be good. while you're at it would be interesting to throw in a 192 wave file as well.

24/96 min wave files would be good. while you're at it would be interesting to throw in a 192 wave file as well. I need to stick with 48k because it'll be easiest to run with the Midas conversion, which maxes at 48k. Luckily, they'll all be going through the same conversion. Feel free to send me files to process if you've got stuff you want done.

I've never used an actual 2500, but I liked how the Waves version worked on drums a lot.

I've got a couple of things that might work. one is a drum room mic and another some bass stuff but nothing worthy of master buss. I'm in the studio tomorrow night finishing off a rewire that's melting my brain it's bee ntaking so long. then am into a mixdown of my bands stuff so if not tomorrow night will be able to get something by next week.

I have always thought a bunch of us should get togather and package some standard reference tracks and reference settings to make these shoot outs more meaning full! That way we could even to some degree shoot out the shoot outs and learn the tracks on our own systems.

Right now I'm planning on popping the comps onto some tracks that I just downloaded from Telefunken. I haven't popped them into Pro Tools yet, but I thought the songs sounded pretty reasonable on their site and should be some decent stuff to work with. I'm doubt that I'll have time to fully mix all three songs, but I'll at least get the comps on a couple drum busses and in the mix buss position for one of the sogns. Do you want to hear the comps on other things too or just the busses? I assume that for the fully mixed tune I should just mix it the way I normally would with comps and eq and stuff? I'll use my RJR SSL style on the drum buss when I have the 2500 in the mix buss position. Also, I'll mix into the hardware 2500 when it's in the mix buss position, then I'll set the settings the same for the Tonelux and sub that in, then I'll send the full mix through just the Waves for a version. Does all this make sense? Which of these tunes would you guys like to hear the full mix of? I think the Brew song would probably be the best gauge, but I can be flexible. Also, if you guys have fully mixed tracks (or mixed drums, or whatever) that you want to hear these on, send em over! The API 2500 hardware is really all over the map so the only valid comparison would be the specific one that they modeled.

I've been working on getting some files done and will have them posted this week. How do I go about level matching the files? Do I just export each mix, then normalize that file to -.3 or something? Is there a different and/or better way to do it?

Do you guys want this stuff blind or do you want to know what we've got right off the bat?
Few other things... I mixed a section of the tracks from the Alan Evans Trio live at the Telefunken Studios sessions. I just did a quick mix then started printing through the comps. Mix isn't perfect and could use some tweaks, but I only have the Waves demo for a week and time is ticking. I processed a pretty big chunk of mix through the comps on a few different settings. I plan on going back, tweaking the mix, and processing a shorter section a second time, maybe with different settings if there is a demand? I'll get some samples of just drums through these as well. Let me know what settings you're looking for, faster or slower attack/release etc.
Any thoughts/feedback will be helpful.

I might be DLing some to play with.

A lot of cats on the other site will process an electronic drum loop and stuff through the hardware for these shootouts, but that's not the type of stuff I work with, so I wanted to use some live performed tracks.

So slow attack, fast-to-medium release, 2/4:1, 2-5dB GR, etc. I want to hear how sharp or round the sound becomes with these.

I set the settings close to where I normally have my RJR (SSL type). I set up the mix with the Hardware 2500, no Thrust and New, and was pulling up to 4db or so on the loudest parts. When I switched over to Old, it maxed out at 6db, but was normally tickling around 3db. I didn't want to get into playing with the threshold settings and screwing with repeatability, so they stayed there. Settings on the API were: Threshold: +2 Attack: 10 Release: .2 Knee: Hard Thrust: Takes with both Normal and Loud Tone Type: Takes with both Old and New No Shape 100% Link Makeup Gain: +3 Settings on the Tonelux were: Threshold: -10 Attack: 10 Release: .2 Tilt (similar to Thrust; sidechain filter): Takes with both Normal and Tilt Tone Type: Takes with both Old and New 100% Link 100% Wet Makeup Gain: 8:15 (on a clock)
