Ok so, I have a austrain audio oc18. I wanna pair it with a tube preamp. My current pres are the ones in my neuman mt48 and a miktek mpa201 (ami transformers).
My two choices are. Igs pure tube channel and electric and company ec6. I do hip hop. I can't find demos on any. I am looking for some good character and maybe to soften transients and the highs a bit. I'm open to other suggestions while trying to stay in the $1000-1500 range.

Sebatron VMP + or VMP 4000. 4 channels will be about $1500, you can sometimes find them used for as little as $1k. They’re the real deal and sound great. They sound awesome tuning drum machines and synths through them as well.

I had a vmp twice in my life and I kinda hate I sold them. I also, hate I sold the dbx 676. More, I'm even more confused. I was reading this thread realgearonline.com/thread/15729/electric-company-preampsAnd the EC6 was described as edginess and breaking up in a brass way. It's kinda to what im wanting to take away. |

I had a Sebatron waaay back and it was pretty good, it was an early model with black faceplate and unbalanced output... so no idea if the current models are the same, but mine was fine.
Another contender for what you are looking is the Gyraf G9 (its a kit and can be had regularly on the used market, check out the build quality though - it depends on how crafty the builder was) or the Handcrafted Labs affinit preamp, built to a high standard from a former radar tech. Does the transient soften thing and also can be dialled in from clean to buttery saturation with friendly overtones - it's two channel so maybe you want just one...

Probably for your genre their 286 model - though my personal favourite is 70.
The negative feeback control is amazing - you can dial in the perfect mic tone at the tracking stage.
Once you've used a tube pre with a variable feedback control you'll never want a tube pre without this control!
Highly recommend demo if you can get one.

Nobody has experience with the igs tube channel? Not experience but have been glancing at it as something I’d likely pick up as my next tube pair if needed. I have other igs units and they are as solid as it gets. The build quality on the units I have are in a class of it’s own in the price range. And they sound great. the wt-72 has been a great contender I think too in reasonable priced tube gear that punches beyond their price. |

The Negative Feedback control allows you to vary the harmonic content of the signal in a very unique way and something that ordinary EQ won't achieve. Clockwise it reduces that harmonic content and slightly darkens the signal. Counter clockwise it increases the harmonic content and brightens the signal. I'll never buy another tube pre-amp again unless it has this control - I find it indispensable for dialing in the perfect tone. I use mine with my Wunder CM7 (U47 clone) I dial the NF control to 1pm and it very subtly rolls of the top end in a very musically pleasing way. I think it's fantastic. I follow it with a Retro STA Level or Thermionic Phoenix MP compressor and it makes for one very smooth liquid vocal sound. A touch retro yes, but very much my cup of tea and a great match for my bright tenor voice. |

I hate to say it, but don't sleep on Avalon. Such a great preamp that gets overlooked because of BS. One of my favorite after having owned all of the "holy grails".

I'm not looking for some good, because there's lots of preamps that sound good. I'm mainly looking for something to soften the highs and Round the tone a bit. |

That's exactly what it does without losing detail and presence like a UA 610. This isn't a hip hop example but she opens with some spoken word.

I had the affinity for a couple years. It was a bit too colored and hi fi. Didn't really soften the highs. I bought the sebatron again and it does what I'm looking for. I have a dbx 676 coming tomorrow. It will be between these two. Because, I bought both from first guitar center and can return either here locally. |
