Hi there, RGO, this is Mattie Smith from Electric & Company. I was asked to start a thread on our preamp line, and so here we are. First off let me say, Electric & Company is a tiny operation. We are pretty much the embodiment of what one would call a ‘boutique’ company, for whatever that’s worth. We exist to bring some high quality and unique boxes to the table, and make sure they go to happy homes/studios. If we make some money doing that, fantastic, but the former always comes first. All of our designs are a little bit “left of the dial”. While I am outlining some uses below, keep in mind that you really can’t go wrong with any of them.
EC3- AMPEX 351 circuit. 70dB (ish) gain. 2 12AX7 tubes, 1 12AU7 tube, Jensen input, Cinemag output. Lots of gain with a distinctive tone. In a nutshell: Thick, solid, with a bit of oomph in the low end. Will break up when pushed, yet still hold solid. These are great for anything you want to push and keep full. (Vocals, Bass, Lead instruments)
EC6- AMPEX 601 circuit. 60dB(ish) gain. 1 EF86 tube, 1 12AU7 tube, Cinemag input and output. In a nutshell: Mid forward with a slight edginess to the tone. Will break up, but in more of a brash way. It’s pretty distinctive. When pushed, there is a sweet spot where the unit compresses slightly and begins to add a bit more harmonic content. When pushed, the attack is retained and the mid range really saturates. These are great for rhythmic and percussive sounds(drums, guitar, bass, piano, horns).
EC7- Original Circuit. 55dB(ish) gain. 1 12AY7 tube, 1 12BH7 tube, Jensen input and output. In a nutshell: Round low end with a very sweet top end. Slightly slower sounding than the other 2. In general, the EC7 is the sweetest and roundest of the bunch. Doesn’t really break up like the other 2 units. Great for anything you want some slight tube flattery(Vocals, Pianos, Strings, Horns, Acoustic Instruments)

Welcome to RGO Mattie. It's Tony from Bloomington IL (Wiplot) here. Our bands played together about a million years ago when you were on tour.

Welcome, I’d respectfully suggest you get some demo pres to Josh (seawell) here, he’d do great reviews: great YouTube marketing.

Welcome, I’d respectfully suggest you get some demo pres to Josh (seawell) here, he’d do great reviews: great YouTube marketing. I was thinking Vincent, because I have a hunch there are very very few voices like his that have walked into Electric. Mattie I know he isn’t your intended market, but take a look at one of the demo videos he and his wife have done. Talk about the ultimate vocal acid test.

Wow, I appreciate the support everyone. mattiesmith I would love to test them out and demo them on my channel, but unfortunately I just took my whole rig down as I’m moving. I probably won’t be back up and running till the end of the year. Once I am, I could definitely put something together and feature some old school vocals though the preamps. In the mean time seawell is a good choice to get something out there.

I've done a bunch of vari mu compressor reviews in particular so your EC5B has definitely caught my eye! Here's an example of my work just for reference: Edit: I’m just getting caught up on this thread, thanks for the initial recommendation kcatthedog, it’s much appreciated!
