Jim is dead on about the Omni caps. When I multi-mic instruments, they are the first thing I grab.

kcat's done some nice things using an opto compressor. He posted the same track using the WA76 and his opto compressor, ( I forget which one, but I think it's the 7802). The WA76 is working beautifully for me, but in the context kcat posted in the opto was clearly the better choice. MJB - was wondering where that post was? I can't find it in this thread. Would really like to hear the comparison. Thanks!

Dang odyssey, I've forgotten. Give me a little time and I'll see if I can dig it up.

Ok guys, here's a song with my acoustic guitar: realgearonline.com/post/33975/threadKM184 in narrow ORTF about 7" in front of the guitar, into Neve 1272s. During mixdown I do a little cut in the low end to get rid of a resonant note. They are going through Symetrix 525 compressor for some level control.

you may want to check that file, i'm pretty sure there is something wrong with it? unless you were going for a doubling out of time thing intentionally?

Interesting, I checked it again but it seems to stream correctly and download correctly. Anyone else having issues? I've had one or two folks over the years complain that the server was doing strange things to the files, but I've never been able to find anything wrong.

I just checked with my iPhone(last night was my macpro), same deal, starts off ok, but seconds after drums come in, they start to flamm?

Hmm. Beats me. I just downloaded it again and had someone else check it and they said it was fine. Strange. Not sure if it's this server or what.

Tony, I think it was played that way (timing.) What I hear is almost a slightly out of tune guitar fighting against itself or something else. The recorded sound was nice and shimmery though!

During mixdown I do a little cut in the low end to get rid of a resonant note. They are going through Symetrix 525 compressor for some level control. Curious/. I have never heard anyone ever record a single acoustic guitar using ORTF. What angle did you position the mics in relations to each and to the source? The capsules were around 6"-8" apart facing maybe 60-70deg away from each other. The angle isn't as much as ORTF, but the mics aren't on top of each other like XY. It gives a little more stereo image than XY and offers a little more on-axis pickup for the capsules too. This gives a MUCH cleaner and uncolored sound from the mics. If they are too off axis, it'll sound wonky. I fiddle with them a bit while the player plays so I get the best balance. I do have to say that it's crucial that the player stay in the sweet spot. Things can get strange with even the smallest amount of being off-axis with this. I'm also not going for a big difference between the sounds from the mics. I want just a tiny bit more bass from the bridge side and a tiny bit more string from the neck side. I want it to ultimately sound like the listener is sitting on the floor in front of the player in the room. Anyway, at such close distances, I find that the distance between the capsules doesn't matter much as long as it's roughly the same as the distance to the source or more. The latency of the sound from the source is so short that small actual differences can mean large perceived differences. I'm really in love with this new acoustic guitar. I can get the mics right up on it without much proximity effect at all. The brightness of the KM184 helps too.
