I was supposed to have a few for review by now, I’ll do comparisons with my API stuff.

This is funny - I just changed the gain strapping on all my RCA BA-33B’s to 61dB instead of 76dB because there’s been almost no case where the gain knob wasn’t almost all the way down. Ribbons with crickets, whatever. Carry on….

yeah, all the podcasters that bought SM7B's, then they want to record a gnats fart, so they a couple line-boosters in the chain and then complain there is too much noise. Youtubers at their best... oh, but that Lang stuff does look interesting. Low cost for sure. I can get 84dB out of my Focusrite ISA-2 but even with ribbons I rarely need anything close to that.

I don't think I could buy a pre-amp with "SM7 mode" written on it.
It's a bit .... cheesy.

I guess this is supposed to be Api?
I'm completely lost when it comes to Heritage audio’s offerings. They reissued the lang eq but now this which has nothing to do with the original lang company right? I’m confused

And generally most 312 clones (ish) sound pretty good to me. Of course, this board is CAPI country, but that will cost you a bit more.

I'm curious about the 'SM7/Ribbon' switch. Is it only a gain boost or does it increase impedance as well (like an AEA or Grace)?

The expense of a 312/512 is the metal work, Transformers & OPAMP, so price isn’t that surprising & I’m waiting for the $199 Behringer! Now I understand you buy an old name like Lang you want to get as much out of your investment as you can. Putting that name on no name transformers & DOA’s is just silly, did Lang ever wind its own transformers or build DOA’s? I know it looks good in ad copy, but I like to think we are not that dumb. Just call it a custom transformer & opamp!

Darn it! I was going to pick one up on Thomann but they were gone pretty quickly. I need a couple of utility preamps for drum tracking. Though the absence of output pad as a lot of people have mentioned is a bit surprising.

Buy a soldering iron and some VP28's, you won't find better drum tracking pre's IMO, drive that input and attenuate the output and you get a super musical compressor free of charge

Had some on snare and toms for years. I might get some again but was just kind of looking to change it up a bit. I track 99% of my stuff through tube pres anyway

A Lang transformer crapping out created the very first fuzz tone!

Anybody get their hands on one? I need a couple channels of utility pres. DIYRE CP5 micpre is pretty affordable and easy build. Or only 300 assembled. Add colours later if you want some flavor. Also Five Fish Audio kits which are quite customizable over time.

I've got some of these on the way for review from Heritage, they should be here Tuesday. I'm about to do a video on the ADK Munich-7 microphone, it's transformer based with their own M7 capsule they're designed. I'll double up on that review and split out to my API preamps and the Lang's for everything. Probably throw in a few extra things for the Lang review to hear some ribbon mics with the gain boost, I haven't decided how I want to do that yet though... I was originally thinking of splitting out to my AEA TRP preamps for the ribbon examples where the boost would be engaged on the Lang for a comparison of a "clean" preamp to the Lang. It might be a better comparison to stay on the API preamps and put a cloudlifter in front of it though, that seems a lot more "real world" to me. API and Cloudlifter vs Lang with the Boost mode.

Hey Matt a couple of suggestions if your going to do Mic level splits for review comparisons. 1 If your going to use a transformer splitter use a 3 way for 2 way splits. That way you have the transformer in both paths making things equal. Mo money but significantly cheaper used than years ago A BSS or XTA electronic split are probably the highest Fidelity Analog splits.

A Lang transformer crapping out created the very first fuzz tone! Not sure if that is a good thing or not 😁

But honestly Bob how many times did something that was malfunctioning turn out to be just the thing😁, then someone fixes it and you wanted to hurt them ( as the victim of an attempted murder “ kill” just seams wrong).
