Man....it's been decades. So sorry to hear them go. Not surprised in the least though...... Really hard to keep even iconic studios alive these days.

Not to be contrarian at all— but in better news The Plant Sausalito is back in action after being shuttered for years.

Per Wiki... That's named "Studio 2200". I hope they have/or will go back to the old name. Chris

I heard about this. I think iconic studios will all just disappear, and it's quite sad.

Much like doing your own haircuts, taxes, dentistry etc. And it shows.

A lot of them go into live sound where crap is the expectation and almost always the reality.

I came up the ladder from a Tascam Porta 1 to large format consoles and multi-track tape to the hybrid rig I now run. 42 years of full time experience as a professional musician - it's a traditional path that taught me the ropes old school to new school. Sadly, there just isn't the opportunities about for kids that I had and that defiantly shows in the kids I meet today.

The exception to that rule is Matt Ross-Spang who started at Sun Studios as a tour guide and eventually refitted the studio to period correct things to make it a true to life vintage room. I'm not sure what state it's in for clients now, since he's been gone from there for a while. Yeah but these grads think they are hot shit, and expect to be FOH, Monitor mix or System tech because they have a “degree” or “ certificate “, not that they know anything about live, hauling racks & stacks, coiling cables is below them. A couple of weeks a go a friend was doing a show & afterwards I’m coiling cables, packing stands because I’m standing on a stage talking to him so what do you do. There were 3 new techs all from recording schools who couldn’t understand why this guy off the street didn’t require the supervision they needed. Finally the boss looks at them and say’s “ who do you think showed me how to coil a cable”😁

The cultural decline of the west is here since a few decades and now it's obvious to those who want to look at it. Big studios falling is one of the symptoms. Art and creativity is not wanted so the system is geared to end it. Another sign - some people want to do away with art from bygone ages because in their deluded mind everybody back then was (insert typical party line blah) racist or colonial or whatever they need to put them down so by condemning them they can be moral beacons without having done anything worthwhile. If they persist, they will burn all art before them. All they can savely endure is their own image in the mirror. Barbarians destroying what they see because they can never create anything. "We don't need studios" Todays society is so rotten to the core it just doesn't value & deserve art anymore. Not that it will go on, new people will light the fire again.
Edit - i have found a page where the late David Graber tells the story of how western civilization/the USA went into decline and a few of the factors involved.
in short, after the moon landing which it's many technological marvels having had their impact on the USA and having "defeated" the USSR, the USA got lazy, started to push labor into in the 70s and 80s and concentraded on marketing more than on innovation and production. Research and new technology vanished into the military largely, except for a few fields.
(quote) "...And so a timid, bureaucratic spirit suffuses every aspect of cultural life. It comes festooned in a language of creativity, initiative, and entrepreneurialism. But the language is meaningless. Those thinkers most likely to make a conceptual breakthrough are the least likely to receive funding, and, if breakthroughs occur, they are not likely to find anyone willing to follow up on their most daring implications."
"The final victory over the Soviet Union did not lead to the domination of the market, but, in fact, cemented the dominance of conservative managerial elites, corporate bureaucrats who use the pretext of short-term, competitive, bottom-line thinking to squelch anything likely to have revolutionary implications of any kind."

Much like doing your own haircuts, taxes, dentistry etc. And it shows. In some respects putting the time in, doing due diligence in self-education, understanding the basics/foundations, repetition, and improvements can garner good results. I've been doing my own taxes for most of my adult life...granted, they are not overly complex. Also been cutting my own hair for 10+ years. In fact, I'm at the point where I no longer trust anyone else to do it. I've had more than one experience where the professional stylist couldn't follow instructions. Now, would I cut someone else's hair? Not a chance. But I've done my own for so long...and with the right tools...that I can follow the same methodology and get it right every time. And the bonus is I've saved at least $3,500 to $4,000. Dentistry, though,...I know my limits. On another note, what are they going to do with these bad boys? 3 – M 49 7 – U 87 5 – U 67 3 – U 47 4 – U 47 FET 2 – TLM 170 7 – KM 84

Crikey, this place has become a bit depressing.
I come here for a happy hang.
So much doom and gloom in so many threads.
Sign of the times but still …. let’s try to be positive.

Which they may or may not see, depending on whether the AV job they can get is in a hotel, church, or convention center. But they'll know Dante at least.....

I keep trying to tell my students to get as much experience on a LFAC as they can before they graduate, because it'll likely be years before they get their hands on one again, if they're lucky enough to even be in a room with one at all!

I’ve had kids that went to a school with a duality and couldn’t figure out a 9K.
….uhhhh what’s going on in those places?

In broadcast / recording you probably won’t, event services you walk into a hotel ballroom/ conference room, different story. The never update it is what ever was cool when it was installed.
