Anyone swear by these? It would be nice to have something that would allow the mic to sound the same regardless of where it is in the room…not that it’s a huge change or anything - it would just be nice to sit at the desk and sing occasionally without a bunch of reflections.

I should say - I don’t have any audible reflections or flutter - but I do think there are different resonances at different parts of the room…
So that’s my question really - will this cut down on resonances?

After reading a little bit…not sure they wouldn’t introduce more of a problem than they fix.

I’ve never done any scientific tests or anything remotely close, so all of this is just my subjective opinion based off of what I hear… Pretty much all of the vocal shields I’ve worked with have made vocals sound worse. Ya, you might get rid of a little bit of those room reflections, but the trade off is weird/phasey artifacts and at the worst end of the spectrum, a nasty and boxy tone.
I found this out early on when I was doing vocals in tiny bedrooms, I ended up just dumping the vocal shield completely becasue it sounded better without it when it came time to process the signal. I literally got better results using those cheap auralex foam panels to cover a section in a corner of a room and singing into the corner.
If you absolutely HAVE to have a small vocal shield and are against just slightly treating your room or using a larger panel, the smaller GIK VISO Booth is the only thing I’ve found that sounds good to me. I don’t know if it’s the absorptive material, the fact it’s a little bigger, the angle of the sides (more than likely a combination of all of those), but GIK figured out how to do one of those well. That would be my one and only recommendation.
If you want to actually have something that does the job right, and you’re a little flexible on suggestions, move up to one of the GIK PIB Portable Isolation Booths. They fold down and can be stored out of the way pretty easily if need be. I have two of them and cram them around a corner in my live room all the time, it makes as good a sounding vocal booth as any of the expensive rooms I’ve worked in.
Don’t bother with any of the other vocal shield things out there. It’s kind of the equivalent to taking a headache medication that just makes you shit your pants all the time. Did you really solve your problem?

I've tried a couple and even bought a cheap Primacoustic one from the pawn shop for like 35 bucks. I never like them with the mic right in them as they are 'designed.' I don't mind having it on a stand in front of the booth glass with the mic further back, but I think it's kinda placebo. I cut something recently and realied after the fact that I didn't have it in front of the glass, and the cardioid pattern was not having trouble doing its thing. ETA: I think BEHIND the singer is more important to think about then in front of them, more often. It’s kind of the equivalent to taking a headache medication that just makes you shit your pants all the time. Did you really solve your problem? This line is BRILLIANT!

Had a client get one out of desperation. Didn't help. Not exactly scientific.

These things are so all about marketing rather than any real sonic benefit.

I’m on a “resonance” kick atm, so this I guess is more for cutting out flutter reflections. Apparently what I might need is a roof extension.

I had an SE reflection thing ...
Messed with the pick-up pattern of the mic in a negative way.
Sold it. Experiment over.
Now I have a proper dedicated vocal booth/zone using a GIK portable isolation booth, sky trap and wall panels - works brilliantly.

The alpaca thing that Audioscape are linked with looks interesting. Different approach. Much smaller. Never tried though.
But there’s alpacas!
Cheers, Geoff

I keep saying if people were Smart the other place would have been real estate slutz, it’s the room, it’s the room it’s always the room. Treatment only goes so far, nothing replaces actual space.

I should probably sing outside my room... Try it but you’re probably going to find what ever room works best still could use treatment & of course there is the inconvenience to the family !

It's been pointed out many times by Bob Olhsson too.

FWIW I did buy Mark Williams' PVB sold/designed by RealTraps (thanks again Mark! ) IMHO... It does help on either VO or Singing up to a bit more than "conversational level". Gonna come in real handy for my Children's Book, I'll be narrating. But to be fair at/near full volume... I would have to trudge off to a "real" Pro Studio. * Even my Buddy's nice Project Studio can't contain it! I realize that panels ala Gik etc, behind the Singer do typically help. Chris *"Great Room" is on my bucket list.

I have one that I (rarely) use above outside bass drum mic when a drummer has loud cymbals.

I must slyly add that a M88 for John's vocals... Should solve a degree of acoustical issues right there. In fact I'll be on a M88, in around 3 Hours. At a local Art Gallery. (Voice seems to be finally back to normal/after my Operation mid April)

Maybe sing under it, an hang something behind you. FWIW I did buy Mark Williams' PVB sold/designed by RealTraps (thanks again Mark! ) IMHO... I don’t have need for them anymore, but when I did, the only one I thought sounded great was the Aston Halo. Had the eyeball and Se reflection filter pro before that…the Halo was the only one I felt sounded natural and didn’t seem to impart anything negative (that I noticed anyway).

I have this one and sometimes it really helps. realtraps.com/p_pvb.htm (The one that goes on a stand.) I think this might be the one Chris is referring to but I could be wrong.

Alpaca
Just Fyi. No affiliation, never used it so can’t give an opinion. I just kinda like alpacas. But not that way. Cheers, Geoff

I have some Claustrophobia so... Only use blankets on Cover tunes. Chris P.S. Tony's right but-somehow-couldn't resist.
