...and as much as I wish I walked out with a great deal on a Neumann, it was a deal on a couple Blue mics - Baby Bottle SL and Bluebird SL specifically, $75 for both and a basket.
They tried to get me to buy the Baby Bottle and because it had been obviously dropped, I declined, so they said $20 and its yours - #winner, will probably use it for parts, because while I think it works fine, the head basket is loose on the post and appears to be a compression fitting. I already have a baby bottle that I really like so a capsule donor for $20 isn't a bad thing.
The Bluebird is in great shape and got it and its basket for $50 - how can I complain. Decent additions for a budget mic locker. So that puts my current condensor collection at:
Bluebird SL
Baby Bottle SL
Rode NT1 4th Gen
Lewitt LCT840
I think I can do some decent demos with that group. Not really feeling the need for something "more" yet, but if a Neumann fell in my lap, I wouldn't complain.

It is my belief the Neumanns never "fall" anywhere unless someone trips over a cable. Then again there are probably estate sales where a relative either may not know, or may not care, what they are worth. IME most people who have ever been exposed to the Neumann name will probably know they are expensive and will try to get what they are worth out of them.
Good luck though. I raise a glass to the idea of Neumanns falling out of the sky. I'll be the guy next to you with a big fishing net trying to catch them.

So my friend walks into a thrift store…   and calls me on the phone and says… ”I’m in a thrift store and I was looking in a box full of old headphones, portable cassette players and cheap mics and I found something you might be interested in. It’s a microphone.” “What kind of microphone?” “It’s a Neumann KMS84i.” ”How much?” ”Thirty dollars” he says. (That’s Aussie dollars - about $20 USD) ”Hmmm… Okay I’ll take it.” That was about 35 years ago. These days items are often checked online to see what their market price is so I may not have got the same deal today. Especially from pawn shops. |

Not bad, I have seen worse! I've certainly CUT worse. I have a hot knife and cut worse! Now this is my one reason for sticking with Seahorse and a few Pelican cases for misc stuff, the fact that I can buy replacement cubed foam that’s cut to fit! Worth it’s weight in gold when you sell off a bunch of mics and buy some others. |

(Gasp) About 10 years ago I gifted the Bluebird to a friend because I never gelled with it, probably because of the seeming mid dip which isn't actually but functionally as there are humps in the highs and lows. I bought it second hand for a C-note from a bass player near Bern who was just getting into modular synthesis and was selling it to fund his new addiction.  |

The SL Baby Bottle IMHO "rounds off" a Voice.
Personally, I've been advised to carefully listen to a "Mellow Mic"
(Having a mellow voice to begin with)
I love all the Basic "Big 5" LDC classics.
But the SL started drifting me into the dreaded "Land of Sominex"
Although that could well land me in Kenny G's Touring Band.
Or as a sonic weapon to threaten Teenagers.
Almost as potent as Barney or Baby Shark.

Amazing mics that area KM84's in disguise. Love these for acoustic instruments because the pop filter filters out the breathing noises. |

The secret to buying mics, specifically those that need phantom is to ask to demo before buying, always ask the dumbest looking employee. I always ask if I can use what ever cheap mixer and phones they have lying around, 80% of the time they don’t know enough to turn on the phantom so after discovering the mic is “dead “ if you can discretely turn on the phantom for a tap test then turn it off you can buy a “ dead mic for next to nothing.

You can solder the inner part of the headbasket where the stalk comes into it. Fixes it right up. |

Honestly if you don’t know enough to know the requirements of what you’re selling you have no business selling. Hell it’s why any of the respectable sellers will list an item they have no knowledge of how to test will that item as for parts only. Let’s throw in the fact that if there is any type of seller has probably ripped off more people than any other it’s pawn shops, hell did you know if you read the policies of Cash America and most of the other large chains of pawn shop unless you buy the warranty it’s as is where it is. In other words you don’t test it and find the fault before you pay your screwed without the warranty! What that means is let’s say there is a Soundcraft Delta 24 sitting in the pawn shop down the street, your either giving me the warranty or I’m testing every knob, switch and jack before I buy. Besides the seller has every opportunity to test and find the no existent fault or not agreeing to sell to discount. It’s also why as a seller before anything leaves here it’s tested and I record the test, no edits and serial #s visible and if I have any funny feelings about a buyer he gets the video via email before it ships. |
