It is my belief the Neumanns never "fall" anywhere unless someone trips over a cable. Then again there are probably estate sales where a relative either may not know, or may not care, what they are worth. IME most people who have ever been exposed to the Neumann name will probably know they are expensive and will try to get what they are worth out of them. Good luck though. I raise a glass to the idea of Neumanns falling out of the sky. I'll be the guy next to you with a big fishing net trying to catch them. That would be like finding a Birkin Bag in a thrift shop; it ain't happening. However, there is still hope in the world for finding an unlabeled RCA or DPA or Josephson or something like that. That's nice dream material.

Let’s throw in the fact that if there is any type of seller has probably ripped off more people than any other it’s pawn shops, hell did you know if you read the policies of Cash America and most of the other large chains of pawn shop unless you buy the warranty it’s as is where it is. In other words you don’t test it and find the fault before you pay your screwed without the warranty! This was a Cash America I was dealing with for the Bluebirds and it used to be (maybe not in Nashville) that you had 30-days to return if something wasn't right. I asked the store about this and maybe it changed chain-wide some time ago, but they said people would blow speakers, etc., then bring it back saying it didn't work. The "paid warranty" strikes me as another money grab, but I get it. Any way, they had no good way to test the mic - no boards that worked with phantom power and hooking up an audio interface etc was more than they wanted to do. So the manager gave me until the next morning to figure it out - she was very nice about it. How I negotiate does depend upon the store - I am less 'informative" with large chains who sell used gear and simply should know, this would include pawn shops. I just tell them if I'm taking on the risk, its gonna be cheap. For Mom & Pops, the ones that are left, I am very honest about what I know or don't. About a year ago I was at a store in Arizona and it was one of those cool mom/pop places run by a retired guy who wanted to sell gear and really had little business doing so. He had a 1950s Shure 315 and had nothing in that store that could drive a passive ribbon to properly test it. I told him "if it works, I'd give you $200 because I have no idea what I am getting into." If it didn't work, he agreed to take it back, but we settled on $200 for a working unit - no idea if it was a good deal or not, but I felt it a fair price based on what little info I could find on them. I took it back to where I was staying, had my Carbon with me and at near max gain on the input, it came to life - still have it - great sound. We were both happy. Honestly, I was nervous I was going to toss $200 in the can after a week of having it and it suddenly die. Still works, and is stored upright in its own after market case. If something works, I'll pay a fair price - if I am taking on risk, the price has to reflect that.

That's why you can't find Boomerangs in Aussie Pawn Shops anymore... Too many Returns.
Even the Small Claims disputes turned into... Kangaroo Courts. Chris
