Just ordered this, including the Mouser chart and Hairball parts kit. Really curious how it will compare to my Purple MC77s. Anyone here completed the build? Comments? P.S. perhaps move this thread to DIY instead? D.S JK can move the thread if he wants to, but the reason i started the thread here was because i knew a lot of guys would want this in 500 series, and would figure a way to get it done even if they aren't building it themselves. As far as the build, i looked at the build guide dave made, it looks very very well done, and comprehensive, as soon as i unload about 50 things from my plate, i'll build a few, i'm also curious as to peeps impressions on this. let us know how you make out paul? (no HP filters though 8)

"(no HP filters though 8)" No, but for a moment I though about joking with Dave and ask how to add a sidechain function... But regarding the extensive communication explaining that NV73 HPF for an idiot like me, I'm not sure he would appreciate it

Very interested in your thoughts 'unit7'. I have two Actions and want to add two of these but I am not quite ready to pull the trigger.

Have been waiting for the Hairball kit (transformers, meter etc) for a few days and today it arrived! So finally ready for calibration (tomorrow). Build has gone well, perhaps a little bit more demanding than my previous kits, TBDD chorus, TB550A, LC53A etc. Fewer parts than those kits but a tight design getting everything to fit a 500 module and a special layout with the four PCBs. Still fun as usual and I'm already longing for the next project. Hopefully it will behave and I'll return shortly with impressions. Attachments:

Finally got around to calibrate and play a little with this tonight. Only on kick and snare (rock/pop style) so far. What a great little unit! I'm not an 1176 expert at all but I think it fits the description of a REV A spot on. Compared to my Purple MC77 it sounds a tad bit dirtier and not as full as the MC77. I felt that the MC77 also compressed a bit more effortless. I still have room for a few more 500 modules in my rack so could easily see one more of these. Also had some time playing with my CAPI and TB eqs on kick snare. Winning setup was Kick - TB550A->BAE 10DC, Snare - LC53A->U76. BOOM SMACK!!

hey paul, glad to see your digging your revA, you may consider the serpent la3a, some guys i really trust swear its the shizz, and judging by there recordings, i cant argue. I still have to get my toggle switches, then my rack pair are done.
quick OT question, what traits are the most noticeably diff between brians eq, and jeffs?
thanx and congrats T

Tony, thanks for the Serpent tip! Re the eqs I agree with what I believe is the general consensus about these, that LC sounds a bit more natural and perhaps also affects transients less. A few months ago I tested them on a few things. Preferred the LC on snare and electric guitar, preferred the TB on kick (particurarly!), and ac guit. On bass I liked them both in different ways. One quality both share is that they sound great even at +6/+9 boost settings. I guess you've already noticed that with your stack of LCs!

Did a recording session in another studio tonight. After session had 5 minutes of nerdery with the house engineer, comparing his two vintage blackface 1176s with my U76, again on snare. More or less the same impression as when comparing with my Purples. The U76 is dirtier and not as full bodied. For subtle and discreet compression I'm pretty sure I'll turn to other units in the future. This is box is meant to make some noise!

Just did the math today for one unit. Kit = 149 pounds, Mouser parts = 116 pounds = 265 pounds = $435 dollars. Hairball kit = $155 dollars Exchange rate and shipping = $ 50 dollars Total = $640 dollars

Now all we need is a comparison to the UAD 1176 Bluestripe...

Now all we need is a comparison to the UAD 1176 Bluestripe... Don't have the UAD, but I did compare to Waves CLA comps and was actually pretty impressed by the plugin. Things you don't want to talk about after a build project

Nice! I was thinking about doing another, but my 500 rack is full and I really want to build the rack version from Hairball. Not sure if I'll do the Rev A though, I'd kinda like another flavor for my bass tracks. The blue face to me sounds the best on vocals. I use my U76 as a permanent final compressor for my vox chain. I have two parallel comps that get blended with the source and that all comes out to my U76 at 8:1 and I'm still knocking about 10-12 db with it. You'd think that would be too much, but the U76 makes things sound so massive when you're pushing it, I love that compressor.

Yep...... that little sucker has some heat to it. I can't imagine not putting the final vocal output through it. Just as Unit7 has his set too.... 8:1, knocking maybe 7-12db..... that's when that sucker is rocking and seems like it makes the vocal massive. Cuts too.
