I want to know more about this one. I don't get that some parts on Mouser are not available and they don't look like they will anytime soon. Do I need to look for a replace option instead? Also will it be cheaper than the rack version or the PSU for the 19" is not that expensive? I'd definitely like a Rev A

I'd definitely like a Rev A elgato, I believe the cost will reflect the hairball/mnats rack version, this is about space savings and cool factor in my view, circuit wise they are both spitting images of the real deal, which is a nasty aggressive animal! As far as mouser parts missing from the BOM, there are suitable substitutions available, or mouser just back orderers. I'll check it out and see what i can find, i'm gonna build one of these bad boys myself.

That's what I thought. You just save the cost of the PSU, perhaps. As far as mouser parts missing from the BOM, there are suitable substitutions available, or mouser just back orderers. I'll check it out and see what i can find, i'm gonna build one of these bad boys myself. Nice, please, let us know about those substitutions if you find out. Also, is there any place where I can look into different compatible parts like trafos, etc for different sounds? DIY forums, maybe? It would be cool to know the different options.

slight update, Hairball stuff just ordered, might take a week or two(customssssssss). All the other stuff is here already, looking good. On the stuff that's not in stock at mouser, sometimes if you change the amount(say from 2 to 4) stuf magically is available again... Then again, other online stores might have it in stock,or your local "ye olde resistor shoppe",and substitutes are likely to be found quite easily. cheers pieter

pkgloos,
hows the front panel look quality wise? I hope he does a rev D also. The space savings is just so damn appealing here
Thanx T

Front panel looks quite nice. I'll take a (phonecam)pic tomorrow and post it. I think from memory it's silk-screened,but will check that too. The pics on DON classics site do it justice,I think.

other than a bad choice of sample content, and a strange implementation of a gate? this dudes got some nice front end stuff, u can really hear the aggressive attitude of the revA 1176

Damn... GAS. The "demo" is not that good to be a demo, not even a bypass? Thanks for posting anyway, I'll end up getting one very soon.

Lots of great gear , but your booked solid for the rest of eternity recording Kidd Rocks nephew....... Is the U76 really the exact same thing as a real 1176 ?? I thought with the lower 16V 500 series rack it wasn't possible ?

The circuit is essentially the same as 1176 revA, a voltage divider (and some other shit lol, not sure?) is used to adapt to the 500 series box, guys with 51x boxes can build for the 24V rails and save money on the build with less parts

first post yay!
Thanks for starting this thread. It's hrd for me to keep track of all the kits out there.
With UK pounds to USD and the price of all the orders this comes to roughly $575 including a rough shipping estimate, well surely under $600
The Hairballs are $595 as a whole kit, or right around $500 when ordering the partial kit / Mouser BOM (better move, same parts).
I am particularly excited at the prospect of these in the tiny form factor, hell, I want 4 like radiohead had on In Rainbows sessions. I can get them in arm's reach of my mixing position in a lunchbox--that's sweet! We're talking many RU of space compacted way way down with multiples of these. I love the 500 series, way to go Saul Walker.
But Hairball has the Rev D which is cool, plus save a few bucks and no 500 series rack cost. I wonder how many of each to plan for.
Anyone have a Rev A / Rev D breakdown or comparison on whatever sources?

Hey monkeyxx, welcome to the forum, i'm building 8 hairball 1176's, 6 rev D's and 2 revA's, i decided to use danderlou's(collective cases) stereo cases to save space, so only 4 actually cases housing 8 units. The revA's are noisier and more aggressive than the rev d's(aka LN for low noise), they are definitely classics, i only know of Dave's revA in 500 series from this thread, serpent makes a splice(revD and A on a switch), but i think those may be discontinued? and not DIY. Hope this helps T classic avatar btw lol

I've only heard one hairball 1176. It was a revision D and I have no idea of the build quality, but next to my UREI, it was sadly disappointing. It was a bit nasal sounding and brighter than the UREI. I've heard there are a few simple mods that can be done to help out the sound and experienced guys can prob speak to that.

I'd be really interested in Hairball/mnats Rev D tweaks and mods if anyone knows what's up about that.

I'm not done with mine yet, so i can't speak to the sound, I do know the circuits are spitting replicas of the originals, if there are some mods out there for them, i'd would definitely like to know what they are, and what they're supposed to accomplish? I used elna silmic ll electrolytics everywhere an electro was required, i've really liked the results i've gotten with them.

john, make the "real diy" thread a sticky so it stays afloat over there, the hairball link is in that 1st post, along with a bunch of other stuff. the hairball unit will run about the same as the 500 unit, but they have ALL the revisions, not just revA. The Dons is all about space saving IMV I built/building 8 hairball units, 6 rev D's and 2 rev A's in stereo pairs. Danderloos strereo case (collective cases) I know i'm crazy Tony, Do the stereo builds end up being any cheaper? I like the idea of the U76, since its more portable, but the stereo builds help with that as well. Been using the Waves Bluey plug alot on mixes lately, so was thinking of building 2 blue stripe clones to use as "plugins". I already have two Actions so thought these or MNATs/Hairball units would be nice. Thanks Patrick

What stereo kits do you use? They are the hairball audio stereo kits, you have to get the same amount of pcbs as channels of course, you can save money by getting the off board Power Supply that powers the pair, The stereo 1176 cases you get from collective cases, they are awesome, you also need a few other parts that differ from the BOM for the single units. I think i'll make a little section in the DIY forum that will dedicate to the stereo version of the hairball/collective cases unit.

Just ordered this, including the Mouser chart and Hairball parts kit. Really curious how it will compare to my Purple MC77s. Anyone here completed the build? Comments? P.S. perhaps move this thread to DIY instead? D.S
