U87 is definitely on the short list. No doubt. Beyond that....um, maybe KM84? Not sure. Glad I don't have to really contemplate this subject. Most of my mic collection will not be sold until I'm 6 feet under..... Man I thought we were going to leave each other’s mics to who ever lived longer😁 Haha!!! You're probably going to win! . I'll have to contact the trust attorney....

Why of course. They're Beyer necessities. Chris

For me it would either be a Sennheiser MKH 40 or a real ELA M 251E
Many great records have been made only using SM57s

In the past I had said I would record a whole record/session with an AT4033 or an SM98 but considering neither have made it on a session I’ve done in prob 4 years I’m not so sure I still feel that way.
Maybe an Oktava MK012? Dunno how it would fare on a kick but I’ve used them on literally everything else at some point

If I had a pair Crllie’s M49B! Really the only thing would be kick, but with a decent drummer I could mic the kit at a distance, in an ideal world I would have a dedicated Kick mic for control, but I could get by. I have done this with the Sony C535’s ( acustic groups) SM57’s and M69’s when I was young.

Funny enough, if everyone was positioned correctly around the mic, you could easily record an entire ensemble with just a Royer SF-12 or any of it's relatives!
I've done it a few times, and it was amazing!
Here's one example: Artist: Big Bill Morganfield,
I was going for a old school blues vibe.
Drums Bass 2 x guitars Big Bill on Vocal
Was exactly what the doctor ordered!

Yeah but still M49’s😁 If you could only use one mic to record an album1x M49 I'm a stickler for detail

hell yeah! Love Elf Power! I got book and watch a few Minders shows last year...the Elephant 6 movie/show...top shelf! I've got a friend that's a real engineer...he's laid down the gauntlet for us each to record a song with only 57's. He'll be fine. I will flounder. :-)

For my voice... Cloud's active 44 version/with switchable Voicing, is a further refinement. "Flat" for Low Tenor. "Bright" for Baritone. Chris Why thank you, that's useful mic info! Those sell reasonably. I've always imagined they're great!

It would be nice to be tricky and have a stereo mic at least. I honestly wouldn’t have any complaints using my Vanguard V44. I’ve done plenty of projects using mostly Vanguard stuff, so it wouldn’t be that much of a stretch. I’ve done enough mic review videos at this point where I’ve done a whole song using just one mic. It’s limiting in some ways, but it’s also made me realize it’s not as limiting as some people assume when we have these hypothetical discussion. I’m currently working on a new mic with Derek at Vanguard that’s probably going to end up being my “one” mic. I got to review his crazy stereo C24 clone, and we started talking about a mono version. Although it’s definitely going to be in the C12 ballpark and “inspired”, we spent last weekend doing a lot of modifications and trying some new stuff. Keep an eye out for that one in the next few weeks, there going to be a lot of video content coming out on the development. It’s crazy all the things that mic is going to be able to do… Everything from C12, to taming the top end from 251 all the way to ribbon territory, as well as controlling THD at the tube. It’s going to be a fun one! had a ton of fun at the studio with you, Matt. Thanks for hosting my mad-scientist routine with parts scattered everywhere on the floor and me scrambling to find "that one bag of caps I swear I brought". A bit of clarification - it's something of a half-C24 circuit (essentially a cathode-biased single-triode xformer-coupled design), but with some interesting design twists. There's a fine line between having a bunch of great options and having TOO MANY options. I'm trying to find a happy middle ground in the design, although Matt - I did decide to stick with the 9-way switch instead of the 3-way switch. Hopefully you'll forgive me
