If you could only use one mic to record an album (but as many copies of it as you need), what mic would you choose?

Other than the Blue Bottle Rocket? With 50,000 different capsules? Hmm...

I was going to go Beyer M88, but the M201 is also a solid choice!

Gee I wonder which one Ward might pick. Out of those two?

Gefell UMT70. I can't find anything it doesn't sound good on, although I haven't tried it on the kick drum. Also, even if you record multiple sources with it, the tracks mix well. I don't know why.

At first, I was going to say the MD441, but you sometimes come across voices that just push that mic in a weird way, makes me wonder if stacking several instruments with it could be problematic. Could just be mine, though.
Is choosing a stereo microphone cheating? If not, Neumann SM69.
IF so, gimme a C414EB.

Its a desert island mic for sure. I take my pair with me to every studio I freelance out of. Having a pair of mics I can throw on anything, and trust the results has been invaluable to me.

Guess mine would be... U67 or U47 Style. Lots of selectable Patterns. Or 44 Ribbon. Chris P.S. TLM 103? (With lead shield)

I was coming at this through the lens of sub$500 mics. Over that budget maybe a brighter ribbon or an 87.
Cheers, Geoff

Difficult question but I’d say the Neumann U89 with a slurry of plugs or hardware to back it up. It can do pretty much anything and it’s far more forgiving than a lot of dynamics yet richer in detail.
For me personally as I’ve been tracking or mixing others for two decades and spent the time earning my equipment for self recording a Schoeps SDC is my do all. I’ve tried yet failed constantly to find anything better but it won’t work for most. I do everything not to obfuscate with me but in the past when day to day tracking with others that’s the opposite of what I’m trying to achieve.
For a lot of rock and metal bands the SM7B is the holy grail. I might personally dislike that mic but it has served me well and it’s earned more money than any other mic I’ve ever owned.

maybe a brighter ribbon Cheers, Geoff KSM313 with it's bright side and dark side seems tailor made for a hypothetical like this.

Gee I wonder which one Ward might pick. Out of those two? Gee, it's a tough call . . . but a slight edge to the 441. The 441 with its pristine audio quality takes the lead over the SM7b with its Lumbersexual hipster rugged good looks.

M49 if I'm in a good room. Heiserman type 19 if i'm in a half acceptable room. An old m88 in a bad room.
